Holy shit, that is an incredible revelation. The people of Kavzar used to worship The Horned Rat? That certainly recontextualises a lot about the Doom of Kavzar myth. The stranger adding his contribution to the Great Temple might well be a metaphor for the people including an evil god as part of their pantheon.

And then I could easily see the Horned Rat deciding to... tweak his worshippers, to make them more like him, so that they would only worship him...
How do you get from Elven god of the hunt to the Horned rat?

@BoneyM wouldn't our friend the Baron Anton want niter for his fatory? Or is he supplying just weapons, not ammo? Or perhaps getting the niter already, since he does not need much?
Also, could you please use different separator for scenes and subscenes? It's a bit confusing.

I wonder how often some genius academic makes the incredible discovery that there's a species of technologically advanced beastmen living beneath the Empire, only to end up an extremely disappointed victim of censorship and "yes, everyone who mattered knew all along".
Spare a thought for the whistleblower who isn't willing to let censorship shout down that there is a massive threat to the empire under our feet, and doesn't get the hints.
I assume they eventually end up in front of the witchhunters on trumped up charges.

On one hand, we all love Belebro.

On the other, Roswita dearly needs high quality powder to feed her Repeater rifles, and she is unlikely to get a better deal than a Stirlandian source, while Belegar can always set up his own thing.

And, tbh, the Army of Stirland sounds hungrier for gunpowder than K8P. Also, it looks more directly "assisting the empire", too. So I think we should go for producing in Stirland.

Boney, is there a remarkable quality difference between producing in Stirland and in K8P? Or would we get Gotri's Gotriness involved?

I'm just waiting for a well travelled academic to ask respected Professor for Near East Studies Quirin Waramunt for advice about the strange beast-breeding ratmen he found clashing with Chaos Dwarves in the vicinity of the Skull Road.

Qrech would probably ruin him in academic circles, and it would be hilarious if it wasn't so dark.

Thats a long way to transport Niter. Better to set up Gong collection and a Niter factory in Karag Nar, I'd think.

Keep working up the value chain. I'm certain the Stirland Repeater will benefit from better quality gunpowder.

And I wonder how many of these discoveries will come from Qrech's students investigating him and his wild tales!
At this point I wouldn't surprised if there's a small group of academics who keep an eye on people who look into areas that might lead one to the shape created by the empty space that the Conspiracy of Silence leaves.

They probably swoop down with commiserations and hard liquor and induct the person; the only joy that the new person gets from their moment of insight is that "hey! at least when we next find someone that is on the path to figuring it out, we can all get really drunk."

Okay, so I think I know how we could prove that the Winds of Magic are actually divine. First, we develop a way to kill Gods, test it on some unwanted God like The Horned Rat or Sigmar, and then we see if we can use it to slay one of the Eight.

Probably the Celestial Wind, just to see the look on their faces.
they'd never see it coming[1]

[1] provided one uses Ulgu to do it, of course ;)

Yeah, making each Imperial province more self-sufficient is a big deal. Trade can be hard and slow, and provinces seem to get ravaged and besieged every five years in this setting.

Horns and savagery and self-reliance.

This is before cartridges, bullets and gunpowder are currently bought separately.

I've tweaked the second Cython scene to be a bit clearer.

EIC making a K8P factory will be the same quality, selling it to K8P will mean Gotri will put together a factory for full Dwarf-quality firepower.

We don't need to ship the raw material all across the world. The EIC's getting pretty sophisticated; they can make gunpowder, with a little investment. It's not like there'll ever be a shortage of customers.

Because it's not Kurnous and never was him, that was just what Cython thought at the time from the divinities iconography. Mathilde thought the same, from the Tylosian coins she inspected. Instead, it was a new god added to the Tylosian Pantheon, and shortly after he was introduced Tylos was destroyed and the survivors scattered to the winds. That's the Horned Rat, one hundred percent.

[ ] Sell the niter to Zhufbar
Continue what we're doing. It's a valuable trade tie and earns quite the good share of money and results in quality powder.

[ ] Sell the niter to Karak Eight Peaks
It's quite the distance to ship the niter but maybe.

[ ] Sell the niter to Nuln
Like Zhufbar but a different trade partner.

Probably my favorite choice since Stirland is now using repeaters and we can bring dwarf expertise to ensure the quality is high. Probably the most profitable choice in the end as well.

Once again it's quite the distance to ship the niter. Difficult to say if it's worth it compared to the sure bets the other choices seem to offer.

Mathilde actually made the same mistake as Cython not long ago.
Have to say, it feels like between all this there's a hell of a paper in the early worship and origins of the Horned Rat, if only all the fiddly little details could be tracked down.

Cython hasn't realized and Mathilde doesn't seem to have made the connection either. They mystery is still ticking in the back of her mind.

Immortality through creation rather than destruction. Imagine if all Skaven were like that, then their empire would rise, and rise, and rise. Alas, their culture suggests that they'd rather sabotage each other to get ahead instead of working fully towards it.
More interesing thing that is shown with Qrech is that Skaven can function in non-backstabing culture quite well. Witch means that like rat-puppies their 'evilness' isnt in their nature like beastmen but result of nurture from birth. They technicaly have free will and ability to chose like humans, dwares or elves. Its just that none could grow up outside of skaven culture. Even if some group decided to ran away they would rise their decendants in the same way and continiue cycle of backstabing.

AH CRAP! MONEY!

Quick, get rid of it - before the Bursar comes after us!
Ah, the doom of Mathilde, in her efforts to keep her personal earnings down, as to avoid ill notice from the collegiate bursary, she invests and invests and creates new industries and new ways to generate even more money, that she then needs to dispose of post-haste, again, and so on and so forth, round and round, down the rabbit hole...
And pretty soon, if it had not already happened, the bursar will quietly shift her to a secret little "Do not disturb' blacklist, without telling her, of course, due to her constituting a not inconsiderable percentage of the total imperial economy...

Who's up for an expedition to Skavenblight to have a look at the original Temple of the Horned Rat? Wonder if we could successfully disguise ourselves as a Grey Prophet and get a Lord of Decay to sponsor our research into the origins of the Horned Rat. After all, if one knows how the Great One was created, might it not be possible to become one such as him oneself?

I think the issue with sneaking into a Skaven location is that if you successfully appear as one of them, it only marginally decreases the chances of being stabbed.

@BoneyM, IIRC the average skaven lifespan, assuming they don't get murdered first, is about 20 years. To what extent is that simply their natural lifespan and to what extent do the skaven's frankly atrocious conditions (hard labour, subpar food, chronic mental stress, frequent contact with waste and warpstone, etc.) contribute to their short lifespans?
