The EIC hiring an assistant would get a vote, but I'm not sure which option people want. I prefer Julia, but there seems to be people unhappy with this for some reason? Meanwhile, helping Roswita/non-public info is my choice.
Generally, the same objections to Julia parallel the objections to Gretel - the thread has previously preferred a candidate
that they can be assured has no desire for wealth (because of the potential impact on company culture), is definitively political reliable and loyal to the Grey College/Empire first and foremost and is very likely a person of sufficient personal integrity. There was a long conversation on this matter after the first chapter of last turn I believe.
Recruiting outside
is very risky(because their characters and political loyalties are not guaranteed - you could end up with the same choice set as you had for the Stirling Watch, and recruiting a Dwarf means your ability to acquire sensitivity information is constrained because of Dwarven cultural attitudes to secrets)
, Julia's loyalties are to her family, and Gretel's Wealth+Thief combinations all are potentially objectionable.
Basically, the same objections to Julia (large sections of the thread OOC won't trust her with a network meant for the Grey College and Mathilde's role as a Grey Magister) apply to most candidates, except for the Grey Perpetual.
Furthermore,
we have no guarantee of poaching Julia, and odds are, poaching Julia for our own use tears a hole into Stirland's own intelligence network. So those are additional strikes against poaching Julia.
But then again, the thread debate might have shifted since the last time I closely followed the assistant debate.
As I understand it, the options look like this:
Julia
- Guaranteed Competency
- Ramifications on Stirland's own Intelligence Network
- Loyalty is to her family first and foremost.
Gretel
- Guaranteed High Stats
- Can be recruited as a Write-in Duckling Action
- Thief + Wealth combination has been an objection to giving Gretel such a position of power vis a vis EIC Company Culture.
- Already committed to mercenary work.
Recruit Outside
- No Guaranteed Competency/Statline
- No Guaranteed Integrity
- No Guaranteed Political Reliability/Loyalty
Grey Perpetual
- May start with a very inexperienced, newly minted Grey Perpetual up to a Perpetual who does have relevant work experience but no managerial experience before this.
- Integrity and Political Loyalty is sufficiently satisfactory for the Grey College to grant said individual the rank of Perpetual
- Almost certainly no desire for wealth (unless he managed to bamboozle the Grey College about his character)
- A fellow Wizard to narratively interact with, and
entrust with sensitive Grey College-related business.
- His/her training/education/likely skillsets are likely is very familiar to Mathilde, as a graduate of the Grey College.
