I'm hoping that if this meeting leads to a storyline that focuses or at least features the Empire more, that it gives Sigmar the chance to really throw down and do something Good. I'm kind of getting tired of all the hate that gets thrown his way, and he deserves the kind of chance to redeem himself, in Mathilde's eyes at least.

Given that the college curriculum was basically boiled down by Teclis as far as it would go, I do think that there's value in learning all of the spells on the list before seeking out additional learning from the elves.

It displays a commitment to learning that they'd probably take well, and it makes sure that we don't have any embarrassing deficiencies if any of the skills they try to teach build off of spells we don't know (which I can easily imagine might be the case with Cloak Activity).

I don't see the point in spending AP on that last spell. What benefit do we get from learning it that is worth expending limited AP on?

A slight bonus for dealing with elf wizards is not worth the potentially catastrophic consequences of getting arcane marks. Accept some limits.

Definitely, I want to learn those last two. Just don't see a lot of reason to do so until we start active elfternship prep, which isn't for a while yet.

I'm with @Andres110 not worth the risk of arcane marks, you learn spells because you want to use them not because the fact of knowing them might confer some vague prestige. The process of learning is too risky for that sort of showboating IMO. Just the thought of what that untrustworthy mark would to to Mathilde's mental well-being sends a chill down my spine.

Let me rephrase. Destroying our ability to form relationships and socialise with people is not worth +1 Magic, and more people should recognise that.
we don't get arcane marks every time we try to learn a spell, only when we crit fail or succeed.

if anything we should learn them sooner if that is your problem before we get more traits and higher stats that make criting more likely.

also, Mathy is a wizard and prod of it, its in her nature to master her art. (she spent so much time learning her craft, stopping at the end seems off.)

Or learn them never and thus never take the risk. I have not really seen any compelling reason for learning those spells. To use an analogy say Mathilde was a knight and she knows how to use all common weapons and then someone proposes learning to use a throwing stick

"A throwing stick, that sounds a little niche I'm already good with a bow and there is a chance of crippling myself in training"

"Ah but what if you end up naked in the forest needing a weapon, plus some people might like you a bit more if you know how to use literally every weapon."

That just does not seem appealing

.... I'm willing for one research, one spell a turn.

I think that's fair, spells will be done far, far before research, and might help research depending on masteries or need. (looking at the tower of doom.)
[Looks at our lectures, and considers the favour we might get for that, and possibly for talking to Wolf-Pope] - i'd be up for just spending the favour if that helps us get those last spells for less AP tbh.

(I think cloak activity is worth getting, and of we are spending AP on one, might as well go for both)

Battle magic spells require a crit to learn, so this idea of learning them now so we can get them without critting is worthless. Even if it wasn't worthless, it's still a bad idea because it still has a chance of Mathilde getting an arcane mark, which would be very bad for Mathilde's social life. I think you're paying too much attention to your lust for power and not enough attention on the social consequences.

And I don't care that Mathilde is a wizard, forming relationships and socialising with others is better than getting more magically adept.

That's ridiculous. There's nothing in the text so far to suggest that the Ar-Ulric has ever tried to actually do their job.

Ya know, we have been assuming the Ar-Ulric has been nearly as corrupt as the grand theogonist, but...

If the grand thegonist is genuinely corrupt (mundanely or supernaturally) or dangerously incompetent, its possible that the Ar-Ulric is opposing him out of principle/ to protect the empire. Humans like to think that two opposing sides are usually equivalent, but that is rarely the case, usually one is better. Plus, unlike the grand theogonist, the Ar-Ulric has no obligation to the dorfs, so it'd make sense that he'd prioritise an insider danger, such as the dieter of theogonists.

Well, that still leaves the question of an entire Knightly Order of 2,000 Knights and something like 8,000 other people from Middenland who left to join the Expedition and "speak darkly of conflict within the Ulrican Church."
Second, bizarrely, an equal number of Middenlanders - religious exiles, apparently, who speak darkly of conflict within the Ulrican church. The core of this group are the Winter Wolves of Middenheim, who have struck the 'of Middenheim' from their name, turning their back on their home province as, they say, their home province has turned their back on them.

but this just doesn't feel in character.

Mathy has spent her whole life trying to master her art, she lives with dwarfs that don't believe in 'good enough', she made the plunge for BM, she is fascinated with magic to the point 'that it makes more sense to her than the real world'.

my point is that, if you asked me if Mathy would take the risk or her limit herself when full mastery is an inch away, i think she would cross her fingers and go for it.

I like being IC.

... I'm not talking about BM, I'm talking about the two non-battle magics left? they only risk Arcane marks on crits.
