I already asked that, no go because she has no personal connection to it and has never even seen it cast.
Do you think we can at least write a pamphlet explaining the concept of 'we're fucking full of Winds, looking at shit changes it, make the Perpetuals research this' briefly, less of a 'paper' and more a 'letter to the editor'?

I think it'd be better to make a proper experiment of it, trying to block Mathilde's effect on the materials with runed glass to prevent her magic form reaching the experimental subject. We'd get a proper paper out of it, and we wouldn't just be regurgitating what we read from other people's books.

I mean if we are talking about things we will get no direct benefit out of and which conversely should not cost anything just send a note to Regimand with the attached Boring Elementalist Text, he will either use it himself (if he is not too hung up on providing original research in his papers) or pass it on. Either way it would be below the level of abstraction so it's not like Boney would have to calculate how much CF it was worth.

I am surprised there are so few distinct votes, though, as well as so few votes in general; it's been open two and a half hours and we only have 21 voters. With how popular Sofia was as a social option, I kind of assumed this would be a very contentious vote. Maybe Americans are just busy on Saturday night? I'd be unsurprised to learn that the readers of Divided Loyalties are extremely cool people with rockin' social lives.
It's my experience that completely blank/open-ended write-in votes have the least engagement of any kind of vote. Sometimes there will be as few as exactly one person who creates a vote that everyone else then votes for, even in quests that have hundreds of people.
[x]Mind hole until you get the perfect first impression.
I saw this proposed jokingly during discussion, but I just had the worst idea...

[EVIL] "This is the fourth time we've had this discussion. (Lie.) Tell me your entire life's story. I will know when you withold the truth."

Cathayan dragons are rather weird. No other dragons transform into humans either.
IIRC that's because they're half-dragon. I remember something about the Empress being a shapeshifter from the moon who taught the Emperor to change shape? So any discussion of Cathayan dragons needs to take into account that they're not strictly speaking 'dragons'. They're some hybrid thing before you even get to the human-ish descendants.

An idea struct me, it would be hilarious if Mathilde introduced herself while assuming the persona of a vapid manic pixie dream girl version of herself.

Alternatively intentionally have wolf tackle and then start licking her affectionately as a way of mentally disarming our target.

Whilst literature reviews are an important part of modern academic research, I imagine the colleges won't look too fondly upon Mathilde regurgitating other people's conclusions on a topic that she literally can't practice, especially when she could be doing original research instead.

Doubly so if that original research results in the creation of a better type of fireball, which a review of Elementalist writings won't produce, because, again, Wizards can't perform Elementalist magics.

I believe if we want it to be taken seriously rather than Mathilde suddenly making excuses for Elementalists, is to propose some research into broader Earthbound Magic(which I'd note Rite of Way is in fact a Battle Magic built off Skywalk, that are normally considered to work off Earthbound magic, so exploring the idea could ve done) and cite the Elementalists when we get around to writing it.

A low effort rescribing only gets respect when its torn from Skaven and Necromancers. Or borrowed off an Elder Race

I don't think that's accurate.

My understanding of the Lesser Magics is that it's not that they work off of Earthbound magic, it's that they are simple enough that every single Wind can do them.

Fair then how about have wolf do it to Mathilde midway through the expected menacing introduction?
...to give her a bigger panic attack?

This is true. Evidence:
MMAPP is in the colour of the Wind used to cast it.
The Lesser Magic version of our MAP has an effect that differs based on the Wind its caster uses. Therefore, it's not Earthbound magic, it's just Winds in sufficiently low quantities that they haven't started to assert their "personalities" very strongly.

[X] Plan Hat Story and Onboarding

I like Rafin's thesis.

[X] Plan Honesty is the best policy
-[X] Tell Sophia that she seems fine
-[X] Give up the pretenses and just start openly snogging panoramia
-[X] and I mean really really snog her, use tongue and leave hickies and bend her over backwards so much we have to use skywalk to not fall down ourselves
-[X] leave

Apart from being a quest protagonist, what makes Mathilde the right person for this job?
Having written numerous papers trying to reconcile foreign magic systems with the Imperial one, being in charge of project were multiple forms of magic are utilized in unison, and being a noted (if unconventional) international diplomat. Afaict the only person who could possibly be more suited in the Empire would be Dragomas, who is presumably busy patriarching.

Therefore, it's not Earthbound magic, it's just Winds in sufficiently low quantities that they haven't started to assert their "personalities" very strongly.
But Earthbound magic is Winds weak enough to naturally dissipate and thus gain different resonance; theoretically the line between the two is one of mere degrees and Lesser Magic should be completely accessible by Elementalists albeit with different 'flavour'.

There's no basis for that assertion. Ice is just water in a different form, but if I try and pour a big block of ice onto my head to wash myself, I'll just get a concussion.

I don't think we can say that for certain.
But when they diffuse thinly enough into natural matter the Eight Winds become a single variety of energy known as Earthbound magic.
Earthbound Magic is Winds that have diffused so much that they completely lose their character. Petty and Lesser Magics are done with Winds that are present in sufficiently small quantities that they don't have much character, but we know for a fact that they still have some character because of how MMAPP works. So while I think it's plausible that Elementalists might be able to pull off Petty and Lesser Magics (for example, I'm sure they have light spells equivalent to Glowing Light or Marsh Lights, I don't think it's by any means guaranteed. Additionally, the spellbook threadmark says this:
Though all the Colleges hold these spells in common, each performs them differently due to using different Winds to achieve the same effect
So it's not a case of, to use a Magic the Gathering analogy, "generic mana" being used by college wizards and therefore the "generic mana" spellcasters who use Earthbound magic could do the same spells. Each College is still using only their own type of magic, not the "generic" Earthbound magic. But these spells are simple enough that they come in eight different variations.
I thought that petty magic was essentially eight different spells with an effect so simple and replicable that seven moderately talented Magisters can develop said spells using just the insights gained from the original developer.
It's sort of both. It's a result of Winds in small amounts being less differentiated than Winds in large amounts, so a spell that uses sufficiently low amounts of magic can be easily translated because of how similarly the Winds act at that level. But creating a spell within that limitation is very difficult.

For what it's worth, at least in the RP;

Petty magic is divided into Arcane, Divine, and Hedge, and each type of caster can only use the Petty magic spells for their type- Arcane casters get the list that Mathilde has and Eike is learning, Divine casters get a handle of small Blessings, and Hedge casters (which covers both the Hedgewise themselves but also every variety of self-taught Magicker) get a grab-bag of minor effects.

But Lesser magic is actually 8 spells that every single sort of tradition can use, just flavored differently.

To quote page 148 of the 2e core book:
There are certain magical effects so common that they are taught by all spellcasters, arcane and divine. These spells are known by many different names and can be cast by a variety of methods. Priests of the Goddess of Mercy know the spell aethyric armour as Shallya's aegis, while Celestial Wizards know it as heavenly shield. These spells are used to supplement the core spells of the various lores.
As far as the RP works, they probably would have Lesser magics there, but obviously we don't know that Boney is taking that exactly as it is.

Don't remember if I voted, but I quite like RedShirt's plan.
