@Boney thank you for the wonderful update. Lots of little character tidbits that I find honestly charming. We don't get to see Mathilde and the boys bantering that often, but I appreciate getting a look at the character interactions between them.

There are a ton of references and mentions of certain canonical aspects of Reikland and lots of geographical tidbits that I'd be interested in diving into, but today is my sibling Raven's birthday. I'm gonna be spending most of it with them. If any of you feel so inclined I'd be happy to show them your birthday wishes.

Happy birthday to Raven from me too if I am not too late.

Just as a heads-up, friendo, you're missing Xs in here.
Was it voluntary not to put X between the brackets?
Fixed those, thank you, I was on mobile when I posted that and just forgot.

Are you angling to buy books about them in the upcoming purchase round? If so, which?
Well, Metallurgy seems like a given for the Capstone so it'd probably have to be via Barak Varr, and I'm pretty sure we floated getting Athel Loren books too... but I guess Barak Varr doesn't encourage getting Druchii books, given that the dwarves don't have anything on them. It'd be a bit wasteful. So the third BV topic would probably be... Bretonnia?

I guess we could out-of-pocket all Empire books on the Druchii? Or maybe just up to Extensive? I don't know which people would be more likely to vote for.

Orphanages are actually pretty good for literacy, even in whf.
- their most likely in a bigger cities then out in the country side (where literacy is not as needed)
- the caretakers generally want their charges to have a good future, and that means education. Because they can't co back on existing family bonds they need to bring something else to the table, literacy is that.
- they have more time then normal kids who generally will help in the family business if at all possible. Gives them time to learn.
-and as already said, most orphanages are run by cults, cults who need literacy for most of their duties and religious learnings.

We really should see about spending an action cultivating more book contacts at some point. Marienburg probably has a lot of books that the wider empire wouldn't.

Locals to better integrate the library with the locals.

Max is just because I want to see more of him.

Panorama is because I want to support her through her trials. It'll probably just be emotional support, but that is valuable.

Sylvania is because we spent a lot of effort cleaning it up and I want to make sure we keep it vampire free. For our old boss, if nothing else.

Middenland / Druchii / Briefing are part of our job. Let's make sure our allies don't start fighting and that we keep an eye out for potential problems.

Wasn't a major reason for literacy the Bible? And if I remember correctly, quite a few orphanages were Christian and had bible reading sessions or whatever. I suppose the equivalent is Shallyans teaching children the holy word of Shallya or something.

Shouldn't we have done at least 3 by now?
One per ritual.
They might not be anywhere useful, but the rituals are tested and should have made working tributaries in the testing.
I agree. From what I understand, to create a ritual you have to actually succeed at casting it once - meaning there are three new tributaries from the three newly developed rituals.

I think we can't make book contacts in Marienburg at the moment because of the trade embargo that's sort-of-not-really our fault. Everywhere else is fine, however.
At the moment we need better Bretonnian contacts (as that's the only other language we can read, barring Elves)

Would be good to learn Kislevarin and make inroads there.

The talk of integrating the library made me realise that this applies even more to the Orphans option.

We know that the various Cults recruit from the orphanages, so this option would mean that our Librarians will have childhood friends in cults with access to their libraries across the Old World.

Getting continuity access to recruit the Orphans will also mean building connections across the Old World. Those connections won't just be useful for the library, but can also be leveraged for the EIC, and for the Karak in general.

It's a long play, but this should link Karak Eight Peaks and its Great Library much more closely to institutions across the civilised world. At the moment one of the major limitations on the library is that it's on the edge of the map. This will help to address that. Linking to the locals will always be far, far less of an issue as the Library is on their door step and they'll be exposed to it on a regular basis.

We founded this library on large part to act as an apocalypse proof repository of knowledge of the civilised realms. Recruiting people from all of them, with continuing connections to all of them is a much better way of achieving success that.

We want to be an integral part of the intellectual life of wider civilisation, not focus on being a municipal amenity of Karak Eight Peaks.

Yes, the Protestant movement pushed the belief that everyone should be able to read the bible in their local language, rather than having a priest recite unintelligible Latin at you. The fact that this coincided with the cost of bibles dropping like the pound really helped spread literacy, and in many cases helped preserve endangered languages. There's a famous story about a 15 year old girl who walked barefoot across the length of Wales to acquire a Welsh copy of the bible, and this ignited national pride in the language and helped save it. Meanwhile, the Cornish language was lost completely and there are very few modern speakers of it today (who technically speak a reconstructed version of the language).

There's no equivalent text or cultural movement in the Warhammer world, so even with printing presses literacy is going to be very slow moving.

Most orphanages in the Old World are run by Cults who have their own holy books, so the same reasoning carries over.

(also it's a big subject that's not at all related to the quest, but historically there was a lot of debate within the Christian faiths over whether the Bible was something for everyone to read or whether it was only for the clergy, and at points it was a crime punishable by death to translate the Bible from Greek or Latin into a 'vulgar tongue')

The 2 cults are my preferred choices because they are the options that are ready out of the box and we finally start building ties with the Cult of Verena. I'll approval vote for Orphans because between it and Locals I'll 100% be selfish and choose the option that benefits Mathilde the most , which I'm this case if the loyalty of the Orphans option

I really don't want to wait multiple turns again to train up the Orphans and locals

There is a difference between literate to the basic level and trained speed writer.

Plus I want my nerd knights (knights of the scroll) to help us next time we have to go ruin diving or kicking down doors.

Eh... if we recruit young enough I doubt it will matter. People will not really remember the kids they used to be friends with when they were 10 or something, what the Empire considers a child. Even when they do remember they will not be that fond of them, it's more of an 'oh, hey it's that guy' rather than 'good to see you again blood brother of the great cookie heist'.
