The OOC reality is that Dwarfs use axes and hammers for the sake of the aesthetic and traditional fantasy tropes. The best IC explanation people have come up with IMO is a cultural tradition of using tools in both war and peace.

The REAL answer is that Dwarfs work in a combat binary. They either kill you from so far away that you are a speck or they kill you from close enough that you can see the fury on their face as they cut you down like wheat during harvest.

Ignore those silverine pikes they found in K8P, those are obviously gifts meant for the Asur that got made right as the War of Vengeance kicked off spoils of war. :^V (I don't actually know if that's true it's been a while)
How about "Yes. K8P dawi cross trained with elves and found that pikes were totally great weapons when used by people with their low centers of gravity. Like everything associated with elves. They dumped the idea in the trash. The trend also died out when they ended up facing arrow hax. Never to be revived because fuck the elves."

Timeline-wise (if this was canon) the current big events that happened and are coming up 'shortly' would be:

Greasus Goldtooth declares himself Overtyrant in 2487 (two years ago.)

The Battle of Death Pass in 2488 (1 year ago): luckily, it seems that in this timeline Morglum Necksnapper did not find enough boyz in the border princes to start a big fight (yet)... something about a 'kill'y tower?'

The Skink Astromancer Tetto'eko stems a Skaven incursion from the ruins of Quetza, visa a passing comet. 2489

Battle of Villa Vennia, Miragliano defeats Remas. 2489

Heinrich Kemmler finds Krell, goes to Kightland to be dicks, somehow skaven get involved. 2491

The Window Tax Riot in Altdorf. 2495

The Battle of the Cairns. Heinrich Kemmler picks a fight with Athel Loren, its goes better for him than you would expect!... as in he survived a Durthu encounter. 2496

The Slann wake up for a whole minute, the great vortex gets bigger. 2497

Battle of Nuln, Skaven attack Nuln, Nuln wins. 2499

Louen Leoncoeur is crowned King of Bretonnia and 'your Boy!' Golgfag Maneater makes he appeared in the old world... and Waaagh Gnaskrak hits Worlds Edge Mountains, hard. 2500

Again, this is the canon timeline (as much as warhammer has one of those.) not the quest timeline.

The battle of Nuln might actually be a shitshow in this timeline. It didn't go super well last time for them.

Quest canon is that Dwarves used to wield polearms as a very common armament before Skaven and Night Goblins became a thing they had to deal with
After which the usage of polearms as a martial tradition died out
You're told of row after row of beautiful polearms, a thousand each of a dozen different designs, each made of a silver-iron alloy made of the two ores native to the Karak, still as sharp as the day they were forged and with wooden hafts that have aged to be even stronger under Dwarven runes of preservation. You've never heard of a Dwarf wielding a polearm, but apparently in ages long past it was quite common, before the onslaught of Skaven and Night Goblins necessitated new tactics. You wonder if they'll start once more.

How about "Yes. K8P dawi cross trained with elves and found that pikes were totally great weapons when used by people with their low centers of gravity. Like everything associated with elves. Lining up in a big group and pointing the long pointy sticks at the other guys so you stab them before they can reach you is a fairly ubiquitous strategy from my understanding
I doubt the Dwarves needed the Elves to explain this idea to them

Also in Quest the dates don't line up
Skaven and Night Goblins became a problem long after the Dwarves and Elves had their falling out

How do you explain the lack of pikes formations then?

How do you explain the lack of pikes formations then?
It's explained right there in the text
The Dwarves faced new enemies in a new environment and were forced to adapt new tactics
And then their neglected polearm martial traditions died out

Remember before the Time of Woes the Underway that connected the Karaks to one another was isolated
Secure pathways which the Dwarves used to transport resources and maintain contact between holds
Most of their threats and conflicts were outside, up on the surface and out in the open, underground was not a major hostile front yet

Then all of the sudden one day a Slann decided that the tectonic plates were in the wrong place and forcibly shoved everything back into shape
Massive earthquakes split open the Underway, cutting the Karaks off from one another and Skaven and Goblins swarmed the underground tunnels
Carved passageways caved in, flooded with magma and became a cramped, crisscrossed mess of tunnel networks
And all of the sudden Dwarves found themselves fighting in cramped passageways against squirrelly opponents that liked to ambush exposed flanks from all three dimensions
Maybe shorter polearms like the poleaxe could have remained, but pikes?
Groups with extra long pokey sticks are great at keeping people in front from getting closer, they're significantly less effective when you're trying to tunnel fight and a giant rat jumps out from a nook in the corner or dives at you from a hole in the ceiling

And then once pike formations stopped being practiced they just died out as a martial tradition among the Dwarves, since they have new tactics now that work for them, and thus no real desire to go experiment with polearms again

Nah, it's just that the Errantry War ended years ago due to the knights coming down with a sudden case of Blood Dragon.

Louen Leoncoeur is crowned King of Bretonnia and 'your Boy!' Golgfag Maneater makes he appeared in the old world... and Waaagh Gnaskrak hits Worlds Edge Mountains, hard. 2500
Mathilde actually met Maneater in Ostermark.

I think I did something like that. Compiling timeline events and whatnot. It was back when I knew less of the timeline and was just collating things, but my brain is in AoS mode so I don't really plan on double checking my work from months ago.
As a frame of reference, I actually compiled all the canonical world events happening around DL's time period that I could find from relevant sources (probably not all but I don't want to do much more) into a timeline. This is just for reference, the events can be completely dismissed or changed as a result of dominos or butterflies.
2468 IC Crone Hellebron and Tullaris Dreadbringer lead a large host of Khainites to a crusade, rampaging through Bretonnia, moving into Tilea then the Border Princes and into the Badlands. Hellebron returns to Har Ganeth satisfied, but Tullaris leads a contingent of some who are still not done into the Land of the Dead. They do well for a little bit then run out of blood since they're fighting undead, so they retreat while being cornered by the Tomb Kings' forces. Eventually Tullaris wipes out half of his surviving soldiers to have Khaine bless him enough for one more victory.

2470 IC Luitpold and Baby Franz are ambushed by Beastmen, saved by Wood Elves. Goblin Warlord Boggrub Legbiter leads the Broken Nose tribe against the Dwarfs of Karak Azul and captures many war machines.Using these weapons they carve a path of destruction through the World's Edge Mountains and into Averland.

2471 IC Chokablox Defiled. Luthor Harkon and the Dark Elves unite to raid the coastal ruins of Chokablox. During the battle, Harkon is captured and imprisoned.

2479 IC Nicolete of Oisement is found guilty of witchcraft and murder following the disappearance of a daughter of the Duke of Lyonesse. Nicolete is sentenced to be walled up in her home in eastern Mousillon.

Circa 2480 IC Throt the Unclean returns from the Chaos Wastes with a captured Blindwyrm. Some time later Throt succeeds at mutating it and creating the first Hell Pit Abomination.

2480 IC The Spawn Tide. Lord Festerlung, Champion of Nurgle, forms an alliance with Vilitch the Curseling and their two warbands journey into the Mountains of Mourn. They fall upon the Iron-Eye Ogre tribe but are almost destroyed as a rampaging Stonehom tramples scores of warriors underfoot. Vilitch unleashes a great spell that mutates Festerlung and all of his followers to gibbering Spawn in the blink of an eye. A tide of fangs and twisted limbs rip both the Stonehorn and the Iron-Eye tribe to ribbons before they disperse into the mountains

2483 IC Lokhir Fellheart and fellow Black Ark Fleetmaster Dastan Coldeye have a competition over who can get more riches and raid more towns over the course of a year. Coldeye chooses Nordland and Fellheart Ostland. They both did well, but Coldeye came out ahead with Nehekharan gold, so Fellheart contacted King Akkateph of Zandri, which resulted in Coldeye's Black Ark being chased, harrassed and eventually sunk. Fellheart won and sacrificed Coldeye to Mathlann and Loec.

2486 IC Wolfram Hertwig becomes Chancellor of Ostermark. Wolfram insists on leading a military campaign over the Grandmaster of the Knights of the Everlasting Light. The Grandmaster holds his troops back to teach Wolfram a lesson, leading to the disastrous defeat known as "Hertwig's Folly". Caused Wolfram to become much more cautious as he grew up.

2487 IC Greasus Goldtooth becomes Overtyrant of the Ogre Kingdoms. Gold is finally recognised to be as valuable as red meat in the Ogre Kingdoms.

2488 IC The Battle of Death Pass. Black Orc Warboss Murglum Necksnapper defeats a Bretonnian army at Death Pass.

2489 IC The Skaven Return. The Astromancer Tetto'eko stems a major Skaven invasion and redirects a comet to crash down upon the Skaven stronghold of Quetza, the Defiled City.

2489 IC Battle of Villa Vennia. Borgio of Miragliano defeats Remas.

2490 IC Necromancer Hela Half-Dead attacks and kills everything she can find in Troll Country until Throgg the Troll King kills her.

2491 IC Heinrich Kemmler makes a deal with the Chaos Gods, regains his powers, revives Krell the Wight King, and lays siege to La Maisontaal Abbey in Bretonnia with the Skaven's assistance. A fierce battle rages between him and Duke Tancred II that results in his defeat.

2492 IC Skrag the Slaughterer becomes the Prophet of the Great Maw. Boris Bokha becomes the Tzar after his father's death.

2493 IC Tsar Boris leads an army against Beastmen and gains the nickname "Radii Bokha" or "Red Boris".

2494 IC Five Black Arks blockade Barak Varr. King Byrrnoth withdraws his troops and hunkers down for a siege, but the Black Arks were content with prisoners and did not desire to destroy the hold for the moment.

2495 IC Borgio the Besieger of Miragliano beats Verezzo in the Battle of Via Veddia.

2496 IC Heinrich Kemmler raises a great army of Undead from the cairns of ancient Bretonni to prepare for an invasion into Parravon. He changes his mind after being attacked by Asrai, deciding he'll invade Athel Loren. He decides to do this in the Winter when most of the forest is asleep, but fails to account for the fact that not all the spirits are asleep. Durthu wakes and alongside the forces of Athel Loren destroys Kemmler's army after a tough fight. Kemmler retreats.

2497 IC Borgio the Besieger defeats Trantio in the Battle of Vittoria Vicca.

2498 IC Horstmann unintentionally creates a new breed of Magic vomiting Trolls and runs away from them. Boris Bokha comes back from his trial to become High Priest of Ursun with his bear Urskin and becomes known as Boris Ursus, heralding a revival of the Ursunite faith.

Pre 2502 IC Theoderic Gausser's turbulent rise to power in Nordland. Aldebrand Ludenhof becoming EC of Hochland. Helmut Feurbach becomes EC of Talabecland.

Unidentified time (Empire): Boris Todbringer's wife, who is from the Nikse family of Nordland (current ECs), is found to be a Slaaneshi Cultist of the Jade Sceptre. Grandmaster of the Knights Panther found to be a Cultist, leading to a purge and the Knightly Order becoming incredibly devout in their need to fight Chaos. Volkmar the Grim rises to power as Grand Theogonist and finds the Lord Protector of the Holy Order of the Templars of Sigmar (Witch Hunters) to be a Chaos Cultist. Purges the Order and instates Witch Hunter Generals over the different areas of the Empire to prevent this from happening again. Emil Valgeir becomes the Ar Ulric.

Unidentified Time (Beastmen): Beastmen don't even have a proper timeline. Taurox becoming the Brass Bull, Ungrol Four Horns rise to power, or anything about Malagor, most things don't have a timeline. Gorthor's rampage around 1500 IC is recorded and so is Moonclaw descending into the world more than 100 years before canon (2400s) to create the Barren Hills in Talabecland. There's also Khazrak which will be detailed later. One event not related to any particular character but holds some importance is the destruction of Frederheim at the hands of a Bray Shaman called Skull Gave and his tribe (from 7th Edition Beastmen).

Unidentified Time (Other): Grimgor Ironhide escaping from Zharr Naggrund and becoming infamous alongside his Immortulz. Malus Darkblade's year-long journey to free himself from the Daemon Tz'arkan after his time in the "Altar of Ultimate Darkness", and his eventual ascension into the rank of Drachau of Hag Graef. Shadowblade's rise to infamy (he's in his 200s so somewhere in the 2400s or early 2500s is my guess). Deathmaster Snikch's birth date and rise to power is not documented timeline wise.

2499 IC Braggat Rockjaw and his Stonegut tribe of Ogres arrive in Athel Loren, they're plied with drink and food, led to a nearby Skaven warren that they drunkenly destroy, and are paid for the good job they've achieved. Rockjaw, not remembering that he agreed to a job, resolves to never return to Athel Loren.

2500 Louen Leoncoeur becomes King of Bretonnia.

2501 IC Maximilian Von Konigswald, the Elector Count of Ostland, is killed and replaced by a cultist of Tzeentch.

2502 IC Karl Franz ascension. Nordland campaign against Norscans, Maximilian Von Konigswald imposter executed. Valmir von Raukov becomes Elector Count of Ostland.

Post 2502 IC Balthasar Gelt becomes Patriarch, he prevents civil war by turning Gausser's gold to lead. Luthor Huss becomes the Prophet of Sigmar. Markus Wulfhart hunts down the Drakwald Cyclops and becomes the Huntsmarshal. He is gifted the Amber Bow by Karl Franz.

2502-2505 IC Tehenhauin is sent by the Slaan to destroy the Skaven's rocket project in Slagmire. This results in a three year battle that culminates in the destruction of the rocket.

2503 IC Emmanuelle von Liebwitz becomes Countess of Wissenland and Nuln. Mannfred von Carstein is revived. Borgio the Besieger murdered in his bath with a toasting fork, most likely by his wife Dolcaletta, who happens to be the sister of Lucrezzia Belladonna, the Princess of Pavona.

2503-2507 IC Gorfang Rotgut initiates a surprise attack on Karak Azul and kidnaps many of Kazador's children. He doesn't kidnap Kazrik, but shaves and nails him to Kazador's throne, traumatising him. Thorgrim later launches an attack against Gorfang to avenge the grudge and bring back Kazador's kin.

2504 IC Minotaurs attempt to cross the Grey Mountains into Athel Loren and are diverted into the Empire through a redirection of the River Weiss. Emperor Karl Franz goes to the Asrai to ask for aid and receives it in the form of Orion, the Wild Hunt and Naeith the Prophetess. A brutal battle ensues where the Emperor is injured and only saved by the hands of an injured Orion, spurred into action by Naeith's words. After the battle's culmination, which was a victory for the Empire and Asrai, Karl Franz received a Griffon egg from an Asrai ambassador that would later become Deathclaw.

2504 IC Fleet engagement between the High Elves led by Sea Lord Aislinn and the Skaven around the Shifting Isles. The Skaven lose.

2505 IC The start of Kurt Helborg's military campaigns in the Empire.

2506 IC Zacharias tries to read the Books of Nagash and Melkhior finds him out, resulting in a duel that almost kills them both but ends with Zacharias' defeat. He retreats and is pursued by Melkhior's minions in a chase until he finds a cave to sleep in.

2507 IC Thalandor Doomstar, Lord of Argwylon, joins Ungrim Ironfist and his throng in exterminating a Beastherd on the edges of Athel Loren. Ungrim somehow decides it's a good idea to turn on Doomstar to avenge a Grudge from millennia ago after the Beastherd is exterminated, causing Doomstar to retreat and vow revenge.

2508 IC Doomstar takes revenge by blockading and laying siege to Karak Kadrin for a full year and inflicting enough losses to sate his vengeance.

2508 IC Markus Wulfhart hunts down Malathrax the Mighty, a Doomfire Dragon rampaging across Reikland

2500-2510 IC Golgfag Maneater's rise to fame. Many battles occur where he fights both for and against Gnashrak Badtooth against the force of Karak Kadrin. This culminates in the Battle of Broken Leg Gully where he works with Ungrim Ironfist and soundly beat Gnashrak once and for all. Unfortunately he steals from Ungrim and runs away to the Border Princes, getting a Grudge scored against him. He later becomes a famous mercenary as a Dog of War and popularises the Ogre mercenary known as the "Maneater".

2509-2511 IC Tamurkhan the Maggot Lord smashes his way through the Border Prince. He then invades Nuln and is defeated at the gates..

2512 IC Baugard the Rash of Bretonnia attempts to cross into the Empire to teach Marius Leitdorf a lesson about proper manners and is rebuffed at Helmgart.

2512 Terrors From the Deep. A Dark Elf army emerges from the Black Way to raid coastal ruins in Lustria. Kroq-Gar and his army drive the tentacled beasts back into the sea and the Black Ark Umbral Tide is grounded by magic and destroyed.

2512-2515 IC Azhag the Slaugtherer's rampage across the Empire and eventual defeat at the hands of the Grandmaster of the Knights Panther.

2513 IC and beyond. Several towns on both sides of the Grey Mountains start disappearing as a result of the Skaven, which ratchets up the tension between Bretonnia and the Empire. Border skirmishes become more frequent.

2514 IC Fritz von Halstedt, Chief Magistrate of Nuln and head of Countess Emmanuelle's secret police, well known for his effectiveness in rooting out corruption, is exposed for trading Warpstone for Skaven support in the form of Thanquol. He is then eliminated, and Thanquol takes this opportunity to instigate a major Skaven assault on Nuln with the help of Clan Skab. The plan is thwarted by Gotrek and Felix, but Thanquol is praised by the Council of Thirteen for clearly having planned the extermination of Clan Skab, who were harboring treasonous thoughts about the Council. The timeline is confused about whether this occurs 2499 IC or 2514 IC, but I'm pretty sure Emmanuelle was the Countess at this time, which means it has to be after 2503 IC. Hieronymus Ostwald replaces Fritz von Halstedt.

2514 IC Druchii regiment intercept and kill a group of High Elves that were to support an Imperial army in the Drakwald forest facing Beastmen. The Druchii assumed the guise of those they killed with illusions, worked alongside the Imperials and dismissed the illusion to attack the Imperial forces in the battle, causing a rout. They then turned on the Beastmen to make them slaves.

2515 IC Ungrim Ironfist beats and captures Golgfag. He's impressed by Golgfag's endurance and somehow decides that it would be more sporting to release him and hunt him down later.

2515 IC Dwarf expedition attacks the Skaven burrow of Fester Spike in the Vaults to reclaim an artifact, Thanquol attempts to summon a Verminlord but instead summons Skarbrand. Havoc ensues.

Circa 2515 IC Tretch Craventail of Clan Rictus begins forming a reputation for greatness in the Darklands (mostly due to his unreasonably good luck).

Circa 2515 IC Lord Mortikin's rampage across Ostland and Kislev ends at the bloody siege of Volganhof, which is burnt to the ground.

2515 IC: The Beastlord Graktar destroys Gortsburg and Leitenbad, but loses the Battle of Helmgart.

2516 IC Aldebrand Ludenhof's son falls ill with a mysterious disease. He's "cured" by a stranger, then becomes a mutant and kills dozens of people in court before leaving to the north to follow his master Festus the Leechlord.

2516 – 2517 IC The Beastlord Graktar is defeated in a challenge by Khazrak who embarks on a series of raids across Drakwald, sacking Jagerhausen, Immelscheld, and Arenburg.

2517 IC Oxyotl returns from the Realm of Chaos into the material realm.

2517 IC Battle of the Bloodpine Woods, where Karl Franz eliminates the Blackclaw Forest Goblin tribe of the Reikwald. Throgg amasses an army to start a war against the "civilised world". Rumors stir about Mallobaude the Black Knight amassing an army in Mousillon and claiming he's the Duke.

2518 IC Shadowblade and a group of assassins use Tullaris' attack on the Blighted Isle as a distraction, moving through Nagarythe, Chrace and ending up in Cothique, using a special poison to pollute the water supply and causing disease to spread.

2518 IC: Boris Todbringer purges Drakwald of Beastmen and personally takes the eye of Khazrak at the Battle of Elsterweld.

2518 IC Zacharias wakes up from his hibernation to find an Emperor Dragon in his cave. He kills the Dragon, drains its blood and becomes satiated. He then raises said dragon, and much more powerful than he used to be he razes Melkhior's lair and takes control over the Forest of Shadows.

2518 IC Tzar Boris dies and his daughter Katarin is crowned. Many changes and events occur after her coronation. This includes the Guilds of Erengrad growing significantly more powerful and influential, challenging the dominance of the Boyars in the city. The third rebellion of Praag under their Z'ra, intending to secede from Gospodar governance, and the only rebellion quelled by military presence, resulting in the Z'ra being deposed and replaced with a Gospodar governor for the first time. Ungol became able to get the title of Druzhina for the first time at Katarin's whim, and Nyvena rises as a popular Ungol figure that those who are unsatisfied with Katarin could rally around (he's not necessarily opposed to Katarin, but he doesn't subordinate himself to her either).

2518 IC Throt the Unclean's army faces off against the Iron Wolves of Chaos Lord Aelfric Cyenwulf, who decides to turn his army around and charge into Kislev rather than continue fighting Clan Moulder's beasts.

2518 IC Mists of Death. A Dark Elf fleet summons dark mists to cover their approach to Bretonnia to raid and capture slaves from the seaside settlements. A large army amasses in response and they begin to lose to the Dark Elves beasts and magic until the Fay Enchantress arrives and banishes the fog. Not many of these Dark Elves survived.

Post 2518 IC Grimgor attempts to assault Kislev and is rebuffed by an ice storm summoned by Tzarina Katarin.

2518 IC Forest Goblins are riled up by humans encroaching on the Black Pit, leading to the Battle for the Drakwald.

2519 IC Daemons come out of Xahutec to attack Lustria. Constant battle ensues until a barricade is set up.

2519 IC Drycha goes on a kill spree around Parravon until she finds the last artifact she needs. She goes to the Wildwood at the height of winter and uses her collected artifacts to free Coeddill. The Asrai sense it too late, and by the time they arrive he has already escaped.

2519: Khazrak takes out Todbringer's right eye in an ambush outside Norderingen. The Count offers a 10,000-crown reward on Khazrak's head.

2519 IC Armand, Bretonnia's standard bearer, becomes Duke of Aquitaine at the King's order.

2519 Slaughter at the Six Spikes. Storm of Magic in the Drakwald Forest from Beastmen killing many Skaven at a holy site consisting of six giant warpstone spikes. Bloody battle where Gelt saves the day by drawing on the Storm to bolster his spells.

2519 IC Wulfrik boasts that he's the strongest warrior to ever draw breath while drunk, becomes cursed by the Chaos Gods and becomes a Wanderer.

Circa 2519 IC Archaon is crowned as Everchosen by Be'lakor.

Circa 2520 IC The Year of Woe. Tzeentch sets Kairos Fateweaver a task to collect the 12 artifacts of the Grail Companions of Gilles Le Breton. He succeeds in collecting eleven with many victories over the forces of Bretonnia until he is opposed at Mousillon by forces of Nurgle headed by Ku'gath Plaguefather. Both forces rout against each other and then at the hands of the Bretonnians.

2520 IC Festus Leechlord starts the Siege of Middendorf through a new concoction that manifests Daemons in the city, the defence is rallied by Luthor Huss.

2520 IC Battle of Blackfire Pass. Death of Marius Leitdorf. Karl Franz channels Sigmar.

2520 IC Lost Plaques. While seeking for the disturbance found in the geomantic web, Ten-Zlati, the Oracle of Kroak, recovers the Lost Plaques from the Golden Ziggurat on the Turtle Isles.

2521 IC Blinded. Chaos forces attack key sites of the Great Warding around the world, culminating in assaults on Lustria. On the Isthmus of Pahuax, a Beastmen army destroys the Monument of the Moon and the Monument of the Sun is desecrated. So many key nodes are lost that Chaos powers flood the world and the foresight of the Slann fails.

2521 IC Vashnaar the Tormentor invades Northern Lustria and is held at bay by Tiq'taqto's forces. Grim-Duraz in the Grey Mountains falls to the Skaven.

2522 IC Mazdamundi and Kroq Gar's forces join with Tiq'taqto and defeats Vashnaar's army at the Siege of Hexoatl.

Circa 2522 IC Nyklaus von Carstein teleports his castle into Galleon's Graveyard, becomes Count Noctilus and the events of Dreadfleet take place.

2522 IC Finubar sends the Everchild Aliathra as a diplomat to the Karaz Ankor. Mannfred works with Heinrich Kemmler to kidnap Aliathra to start a war between Dwarfs and Elves yet again. He succeeds in kidnapping her, but he is then pursued by an Elven party within his lair and they save her. The Elven band is ambushed outside the cave and are saved by a Dwarven Throne headed by Thorgrim. Unfortunately Mannfred uses that opportunity to kidnap Aliathra again, and Tyrion blames the Dwarfs for not being good enough. No grudge is declared, but relations remain sour between Dwarfs and Elves.

2522 IC Malekith leads an assault to destroy the port of Arnheim and succeeds. Mallobaude begins his campaign to take the crown of Bretonnia, Louen Leoncoeur starts an Errantry War against Mallobaude, Dryche kidnaps the Fay Enchantress, Ariel and Lady of the Lake have an argument, Archaon prepares his hordes to go south and annihilate the forces of Order… Lots of stuff happening.

Where is that from? I can't seem to find a reference.
It's been covered in the Lizardmen army books over the years.

This entry in the 8th edition timeline (page 26 of the army book), for example.
-1500: Lord Quex enacts his realignment of the continents. In the course of the continental fine-tuning much of the world suffers disastrous earthquakes — most notably affecting Skavenblight and the Dwarf realm that stretches across the Worlds Edge Mountains.

Yup. There's a reason you don't poke the sleeping god-toads.

Oh hunh, and here I generally recalled that one that misattributed to Mazamundi.

I imagine if the Dwarves ever find out about Lord Quex's activities, he's going to have some steep reconciliations on his hands to avoid a Grudge.

Considering that Quex and the assisting slaan pretty much accidentalied all the dwarven karaks and underways simultaneously, I'm not convinced that's exactly a threat to them. Especially not with how diminished the dwarves are now compare to their peak. Honestly, the only thing that would give the dwarven empire a chance at even surviving declaring that Grudge would be that most slaan spend all their time asleep.

Or the fact that as long as no dwarf throng arrives in Lustria to disturb their sleep, the Slaans won't care if some disgruntled lab rats grumble at them. The Karaz Ankor doesn't have the military or logistical capabilities to go fight across an ocean, and knows it. That Grudge would just sit pretty in the Great Book without ever being erased.

I think there is a misunderstanding in regards to the Slann. Not all Slann are created equal. There are five Generations of Slann, and each subsequent one is tremendously inferior to the one before. The entire First Generation, of which Kroak is a part of, are dead, and their mummified corpses occasionally come back to life because of how powerful their spirits are. The Second Generation consists of five people, which includes Mazdamundi. The Third Generation has 20 people. Fourth and Fifth have a lot more. The lower you get the more active the Slann become, but the older the Slann the more time they spend sleeping. Many Slann astral project themselves into the Warp to fight Daemons and Chaos, and many of them go into sleeps from which they never wake up if their life force fades, which can tend to occur if their body is slain while they're astral projecting.

The Slann are also powerful, but they are a fraction of who they once were. The Slann don't touch the ground because they don't want to get tainted by the impurity of the world. The reason for this is that ever since the Polar Gates collapsed, the world has been thrown into Chaos. The Slann's perfect order was disrupted, and now things occur that weren't ever prophesised, like Chupayotl's destruction through high tide. The Slann would have never miscasted before, but they find that even they struggle to deal with the random fluctuations of the natural order that they are so accustomed, so even they can miscast and blow up.

The Slann are powerful, but I don't think people should generalise. Mazdamundi can raise entire mountain ranges, as demonstrated by the Grey Guardians, but that doesn't mean every Slann can do that. I would place a good bet that Lord Quex is a Second Generation Slaan, as his Generation was never actually revealed.

Yes, but as a collective they're still one of the most powerful force in the world. They could definitely slap down any attempt from the dwarfs at seriously invading them.

Another thing with Dwarven Pikes falling out of favor is that a pike is only a weapon. Meanwhile pickaxes, axes and the like are also tools that the Dwarves have just laying around everywhere. So as they lost more and more ground to their enemies instead of investing in producing pikes they instead invested in furthering production of tools that can also be used as weapons. After all when you're a Dwarf digging out a tunnel or a mine and suddenly hit Goblins or Skaven you don't have time to grab pikes from the armory or anything.

So instead you take your pick and blasting charges and deal with'em. Not to say they abandoned weapons completely, since they obviously still use cannons, firearms etc. Just that they found it easier to have miners and the like just use their tools as weapons. So as their population dwindled you had Dwarves who had to be workers and warriors both, so thus it expanded to axe and hammer too.

I finally finished my last 3 Kurnoths:
Now I have the core of my army: 12 Kurnoth Hunters. 6 Greatswords, 3 Greatbows and 3 Greatscythes:
I made a lot of mistakes in this process. I definitely chose the wrong model to start with from a learning point of view, because Kurnoths were way too intricate and detail oriented for my first assembly. Their legs, arms and branches made everything so much more difficult than it had to be, and even towards the end I was still learning new stuff that I wish I could go back and fix in the older iterations. And yet, the struggles, highs and low and triumphs make the endeavour all that much more fulfilling as I complete it. I made so many improvisations to deal with issues that popped up that I don't even know how to list them. Every model tells a story that is only visible to me, and I find that oddly enchanting.

My opinion is that the best miniatures to practice painting with is just getting 40k Space Marines or Imperial Guards Men cause they are 'cheap' and relatively simple to paint. The newer Age of Sigmar stuff can be kind hard cause of the sheer details on them.

I tried jumping right into a Tyranid army years ago and fucked up like two models. I took a step back and just practiced on SPESS MARINES for a couple of weeks before I came back to Tyranids.
