If the kid is going to take up the hammer he has to become a priest of Sigman. Anything else has a good chance of the hammer rejecting him then the kid is fucked.

Frankly, folk keep talking about Ranald wanting him to become the Ranaldian Emperor,
I say that the most pious thing is to accept the gift given in that he's a Wizard.

I mean if he goes wizard he will most likely not be let anywhere near that hammer so the point is moot. That is a risk for secret priest admittedly.
Also Mathilde disdains Sigmar and would never suggest empowering Him IC.

Ulrican emperors have held Ghal Maraz without issue, such as Sigmar. If he's a priest of Sigmar, he becomes ineligible to become emperor because priests can't inherit titles.

EDIT: Also if the hammer didn't reject Dieter then Mandred will be fine.

It was only a few decades after Sigmar abdicated that his cult even began its existence, let alone gained prominence. There's been plenty of Ulrican Emperors, Ghal Maraz has never been indicated to reject any of them. Hell, that hammer didn't reject Dieter, either, and he was planning to sell it off towards the end of his reign.

Also, if Mandred does become Emperor we already have a lot of the advantages of being a Ranaldian miracle worker from his mother who's presumably stay as a close advisor. There's significant redundancy between both he and his mother having the same supernatural powers. Let her look after those kinds of things, while he picks up another set of abilities that will help in another sphere.

There's a difference between worshipping another god; as a reminder again; all humans in the Empire worship basically all the major gods, even if they have a particular favourite, but channeling their divine power is a different thing.

If she decided it was the best decision for her Godson, she would. She's got beef with Sigmar but wouldn't sabotage Mandred just to spite him.

Priests can't, but divine magic-users don't necessarily have to be priests. The Taalite on the Expedition was a divine magic-user without being a priest.

@Boney: would it occur to Mathilde to suggest another God?

An emperor divinely blessed by Sigmar is probably a shoe in for emperor, and he would probably still be Ranald friendly, given his mother.

Actually, the more I think about it... it has a certain resonance with the Gambler betting big, and then losing the pot after upping the ante one time to many.

I think i'm going to vote for wizard though

Yeah so the option for wizard to be secret never materialized as i feared it would... which makes perfect sense.

As such, i have no real beef with Mandred being trained as a wizard. Godspeed.

@Boney Mathilde will lay out the downsides as she understands them right? Such as nullfied people usually not being able to resist temptation and explode?

Yes, that's why there's an explicit write-in option.

She will.

That's normally the case, but normally people with the potential to use magic get found out because they're actually doing it. Mandred's been discovered extremely early because he has an enchanted toy and a mother with Magesight. This early it's possible to completely and permanently smother Mandred's ability to use magic. Someone who wasn't a Wizard would probably describe this as a good thing.

What are the other divine patrons open to him? Could we push him into Verena or Myrmidia's cults?

Ulric disdains magic or something right?

@Boney Excellent update. I loved it. Thank you for the hard work. You've done a great job with this one. Lots of things to unpack, and a couple unexpected things and good character moments.

Why would being able to do Ranaldan magic prevent Mandred from becoming an Elector Count? Ranald's scandalous but he's legit and an official member of the Grand Conclave.

The Cult of Ulric usually says so, but Hubert disagrees and the Winter Wolves seem to like him. Ulric says you should be self-sufficient, and whether that means magic is out because it comes from Chaos or magic is fine if you wield it yourself is open to interpretation.

Most nobles really don't like Ranald, and all of your nobles not liking you is a really precarious situation for a feudal lord to be in.
