Also taking advantage of the opportunity is Barak Varr's Slotchokri, the Riverine Shipwrights Guild, who have the lead ship of the newly-invented Waterfall-class passenger monitors run ragged taking passengers from Black Fire Pass to Ulrikadrin, showing off its speed and comfort to the many prominent individuals taking the trip.
Presumably they are the result of applying 'reliable' technology in new ways rather than being 'new' technology. Even still it is heartening to see the Dawi get a fresh design into production so quickly.

Kislev has sent a diplomat who has travelled the considerable distance with the nervous-looking delegation from Karak Vlag, the unnatural-seeming leanness of whom is even more pronounced when there are so many other Dwarves to compare against.
It has been quite some time since Vlag was returned. Either Dwarfs have a very long recovery time for malnutrition or food shipments haven't been arriving.

We don't have time to investigate. It isn't our job to investigate. There are undoubtedly qualified people already working on whatever the problem is.
…but I still want to go be nosy.

He coughs into his flagon and only just manages to keep from propelling some of it across the crowd. "Drycha?"

"Who?"

He blinks at you as he wipes his mouth. "Was it led by an Ulgu Branchwraith?"

"Yes, but I didn't get her name before I cut her in half."

He stares at you for a while, and sighs when he realizes you're serious.
Oh that was glorious.

"I think we need more kestrels.
Or perhaps you should visit your gods damned office once in a while, you utter failure of a bureaucrat.

You're..." She looks at you, considering. "Deceiver and Protector by nature, right?"

You consider that. "I suppose so. Night Prowler situationally, Gambler when I need to and when I want to get His attention."

"Right. You're sort of balanced, you have a relationship with all of Him. But my relationship is entirely with the Gambler. Even when I deceive, I'm... well, look at me. The stakes don't get higher than this, do they? That's the Ranald I know. I take risks, the boldest and most stylish ones I can find, and He's right there alongside me and together we ride out the aftermath and pick the pockets of those who couldn't.
A very interesting contrast. Heidi dedicates herself to a single aspect to the deliberate exclusion of the others. And interprets other people as having a similarly definitive relationship.
Mathilde on the other hand aligns with whatever aspects suit the situation. Rather in the Elf style actually.

She considers that, chewing on her lip. "Well, even if that's true, it doesn't change that I need your input. I've been thinking about this ever since I noticed it, and it's not fretting about it I've been doing. I've been looking looking forward to it. I should be worried for my son, and don't get me wrong, I am, but more than that I'm looking forward to what might happen. And I'll roll those dice again and again until they all come up ones and I go to meet the father-in-law of our mutual friend, but for Mandred? For my son?" She grimaces. "Part of me keeps saying that he's not a chip I should be anteing, but another part of me keeps saying that he's already in the game and this just gives him one more tool to play it with. He's got the wrong father to live a safe life no matter what I do, so maybe I should see to it that he's as well-armed as possible. And even if it comes out in the worst way and it ruins any chance of him being Emperor, he's still going to be the next Grand Prince of Reikland, and we've had a hundred Emperors and thousands of Elector Counts but never a Wizard Elector, and that could do so much. The Empire would still have Marienburg if we trusted Wizards more, and Mandred could fix that. You're his godmother, you're a Wizard, and you have a more well-rounded relationship with our God than I do. And you're the only one, apart from Him, that I can talk to about this. Please, give me your advice."
And in this moment Heidi proves herself a better parent than far too many. Not because she is good at the job, but because she is willing to admit she isn't good at it and seek advice.

Also noteworthy that there is no mention of Ranald being present for the conversation.

People grown up with lower nutrition can have a permanently changed body-type, even if they get enough food later.

We'll have to wait for the next generation of Vlag to see "regular" Dwarves from there, I think.

Altdorf will probably accept a wizard elector count. But will Reikland peasantry?

The levels of 'acceptance' necessary are different between the people with all the weapons and the money and those who... don't have those things. The peasants would be risking a hanging if they rebel and they know it so they do not tend to rebel unless they are really pushed into a corner, which this is not.

By itself? No, it's not. But anything bad happening - and it's Warhammer, bad things will happen - will be blamed on the "cursed" ruler.

Yes, there's nothing really revolutionary in it, but previously passengers on Dwarven monitors were usually treated like cargo you couldn't stack quite as high. This is a specialized passenger ship that can double as a troop transport if it needs to.

If someone suffers malnutrition for their first few years they'll be smaller than they otherwise would be for life, no matter how well-fed they might be as adults. For Dwarves, that means leanness rather than (additional) shortness.

Hm. I find it a bit difficult to believe that being Elector-Count of Reikland is a foregone conclusion for publicly a wizard Mandred.

If anything, I consider even achieving that to be a monumental task.

I want Wizard, but I also want Sigmar to have enough votes that it gets mentioned in Mathilde's internal monologue in the update before getting discarded.

I mean sure, but that is still a high bar to pass because it's 'the peasantry has to fight the best trained state troops in the Empire'. They are not going to do that without a real calamity, the sort of which is not common , especially in one of the safer provinces like Reikland.

Outside of Ostermark, Elector Count is an inherited position, and being a Wizard alone wouldn't be enough to start an outright rebellion or coup in Reikland.

the most heavily pregnant bride.

Or it could be you. There's only two children you've been involved in the lives of, and now both of them have turned out to have the potential to be Wizards. What are the odds that that's sheer coincidence?

You know, what are the odds of Kazrik's and Edda's child having a strong affinity for magic?

Kazrik is an apprentice runesmith after all.
It would be 3/3.

(Runesmith would make sense at least, a dwarf becoming an actual wizard would be too much)

Any other province it wouldn't go nearly as well but a lot of the nobility and basically all of the IMPORTANT nobility is going to have been educated in "be performatively dismissive about magic" Altdorf.

Even without a meta standpoint (which is end times), it's still far from a safe bet considering the frequency of waaaghs and cultist infiltrations from the forces smelling an opportunity.

[ ] Nullify
Mandred should add a few subtle magic dampeners to the regalia of a Prince to smother his potential to use magic before it has a chance to bloom, and you and Heidi will have to learn to live with the crippling of a child on your consciences.
[ ] Wizard
When Mandred starts to interact with ambient Winds, he should be trained as a Wizard. For the son of the Emperor, all sorts of allowances could be made to keep the disruption to his life as minimal as possible.
[ ] Ranald
Mandred should be fully inducted into the Cult of Ranald and taught to wield His power, and taught to keep anyone else from finding out he has the capacity to do so.
Nullify is right out. I'm very much against voting for something Mathilde would hate herself for.
Wizard and Ranald… Wizard.

Less risk of total failure. Vastly less risk of backfire. Rewards that, for Mathilde, are at least as good and arguably better than a Ranaldian Emperor. Plus there is no reason that Wizard!Mandred will not also favour Ranald and a Ranaldian Elector Count is a powerful thing on its own.

There is also the fact that Heidi is not asking the Ranald worshipping Lady Magister what the optimal course is. She is asking Mandred's godmother what is best for her child. And forcing a child to carry a deadly secret their entire life is not what a benevolent godmother should do.

Edit: After re-reading the update, I find myself less than enthused about the idea of making an even riskier, even more selfish bet with a mother's son. It just feels too callous.

[] Ranald

Double. Or. Nothing.

Yes, Ranaldian magic isn't the best fit for an Emperor. Yes, this is a great risk. But here's the advantage; the payoff for taking this risk: This choice guarantees Ranald's extremely close attention and investment. You thought Ranald was invested before? With the potential future Emperor not only being Ranald-inclined, but a divine caster of Ranald on top of that? Crank Ranald's personal efforts here up to 11. Eleven hundred percent. That's the major benefit of this choice: Mandred will have one of Warhammer's deities not just looking out for him, but actively trying to get him the best life possible. No amount of wizard training and equipment can compare to that kind of massively weighted advantage.

Besides, Ranald's been stretching his limits throughout the Quest. The exercise here will be good for him, too.

(Also, this would be the ultimate expression of Mathilde's Disdain for Sigmar trait. Just putting that out there.)
