IIRC it took Freddie two years to heal from his drinking competition with Bugman. Even with the light of summer he still had to give his liver a break.

Only cause ripping it out and growing a new one would have upset Nat. :p

Eventually she was cool with him cutting off his tongue though since it got stained after drinking down that dwarf punishment swill.

At least Frederic raised his children by explaining to them that since they don't have magic healing tools, they shouldn't imitate him in his alcohol consumption, right?

But they do though. Of course, referring to Carlotta or Karl or Adira as 'tools' seems a bit unkind. If the adults of the Hohenzollern Herd spar twice a day, morning and evening, for a minimum of 1 and 1/2 hours a day per spar, keeping in mind that they do things like 'deliberately shatter my femurs and then see how hard it is to keep a conscious mind while fighting' and 'deliberately cut major arteries and then fight' and 'fight whilst impaled through the gut by a lance and spear's and the various other events I've gone over during sparring, including full contact stabbings, slashings, disembowelings, beatings, etc, then....what do you call them being regularly and powerfully healed by 2 Magisters of thr Jade College who spent their careers since becoming journeymen basically being the best healers they could be, plus Adira, who could have taken her Magister trials years ago?

They're not doing minimalist Earthblood stuff, except when specifically requested so that the Hohenzollerns know what it is like to fight with deliberately healed outsides whilst the insides are still injured, they're doing Regrowth and so on.

I stopped showing as many sparring situations because there were a few people saying it was a bit too gruesome for them IIRC, but they're still happening.

I am one of these people.

Sorry just, i know the world is a different one and the rational behind it is sane, but family members putting each other through such pain... it hits to close to some irl Abuse i had to live through.

I've read your stuff a dozen times over, but these sparring sessions are the one thing i can't ever read. Not because of your writing or something and not because the spars are abusive instory, but it triggers some very ugly memories in me, so i'm thankfull that you scaled showing them back.

This is in no way meant to be criticismn if your writing

Fair enough about the family members fighting triggering people. Perhaps such things should be put in spoilers and summarized? Or just not mentioned as frequently as torroar has already done works too.

But for me, personally I loved them. It was fascinating to see the natural result of (death world + warrior culture + noble family + noblesse oblige + access to reliable/powerful healing = brutal family training); it was really cool to see them show love to each other, while harming each other, realizing that in doing so they are actually giving their family members a greater chance of survival in the future, and shaping them into the leaders/champions they need to be for their people. And also seeing it not harm their relationships but actually enhance them. Its insane sure, but that's the type of world Warhammer is; and part of the reason I love it.

That was a unique thing. As the QM explained it, Freddy as his body was then, normally would survive a drinking competition like that without much fuss and medical aid, using human brews and against a human. However, among the brews used in the competition were dwarf in origin. Dwarf brews are different from human brews, with Bugman's best being among the top of the tier of dwarf brews. Dwarf brews are meant for dwarfs (with stuff in them that aid a dwarf's health, such as a high calorie content), that Freddy survived what he put himself through is both due to being a Hohenzollern, and due to all the internal magic he was carrying at the time, the immediate healing performed too. Also helped that Josef Bugman took a handicap by drinking some multiple barrels of dwarf brew before the drinking competition.

The Hohenzollerns are also in general built different from most people's alcohol tolerance. Sabine once remarked on the alcohol consumption, and Serhild confirms that Ostlanders in general are heavy drinkers, but the Hohenzollern consumption for alcohol is abnormal for even a Ostlander. Hinting at some natural tolerance for the normal Hohenzollern alcohol consumption. Not at the level of winning against a dwarf brewmaster taking a Hohenzollern seriously in a drinking contest, but at least above most humans alcohol tolerance.
She had drunk during the wedding, of course. Everyone had. Even some of the priests, if she hadn't missed her mark in terms of observation. But even her husband drank far more than she herself did. Than most men she had seen other than weary soldiers and beaten down teamsters. But she did not remember the flavors much, all things considered. A lot had been on her mind at the time, and to be honest much still was. But the wine was comfortingly sweet and didn't make her choke like the ostka did. Or the Bugman's. It flowed down easily and warmed her belly, which was precisely how it was meant to go.

"So," Serhild smiled at her again while leaning forward, teeth bared but not unpleasantly, "What do you want to know?"

Sabine considered her, and all that she had seen.

"The drinking…?"

Serhild tittered and poured more wine into her glass. Which was, to Sabine's surprise, entirely empty. Rather than the small sip that she herself had taken, the other woman had completely drained her glass! Without her even noticing! A small pearl of coldness appeared in her warmed guts.

"Oh, there's all sorts of things to drink about, the Hohenzollern's just have a bit more to drink about than most – even in Ostland," Serhild drank her entire glass again as if it were nothing but water, "And in Ostland, that's saying something."

.

4. You're in luck, there's already a scene discussing that which has been written. It'll be slotted into the next non Everpeak Excerpt.
"Mmm…no. You need to go," Natasha eventually said, though there were faint notes of regret in it. "Boris will have all of the information you need."

Frederick blinked as he finished dressing, drinking another fourth of the pitcher on the way.

"Shouldn't he have retired by now? The man was two decades older than you when he got to Ostland."

QM, when you get around to showing the audience what happened with Anna and Arthur again, could you include Boris and the fate of Natasha's Kreml Guard in it? In 2344 IC Natasha von Hohenzollern (nee Romanov) is about 63, making Boris about 83, perhaps 93. And seeing how the Kreml guard haven't seemed to have been replenished or replaced (Natasha entered into Ostland with 300 Kreml Guard and 500 Kossars), they too might mostly be in their 70s?

With Natasha missing in action, and the current turmoil in Kislev. Would Boris and the Kreml Guard stick around protecting one of Natasha's kids or seek permission to return to Kislev, should probably be addressed.

The thing that always itches at my brain about that is the effect of the law of averages catching up to people.

The basic underlying theory (training that includes severe physical injury that magicians will then heal) at least makes sense. As a concept, it hangs together. The trouble is... well, if you do something in a training exercise, and it has a 99.9% chance of going as planned and inflicting only injury the mages can repair, but a 0.1% chance of screwing up and causing a lethal, irreparable injury...

Well, your odds of not causing a lethal, irreparable injury given 700 attempts are only about 50/50, and it gets worse from there.

"Twice a day for a year," allowing for very infrequent breaks or days off when there simply isn't time, is already 700 attempts.

So if you're doing that kind of sparring every day, or multiple times a day, there's a pretty strict limit you can't cross before the cumulative risks of something going wrong and killing you in a training accident override the benefits you gain in combat.

You need to be very sure that your Jade Wizard won't miscast, that your nonlethal but gruesome eye injury won't turn into an instantly lethal brain injury, and so on.

I posit a theory.

Groin shots are considered perfectly sensible and ruthlessly appropriate combat tactics during Hohenzollern Sparring Sessions - because of course the enemy won't be genteel enough to skip their own lessons in The Blackguard's Guide To Improper Biffing.

On the other hand, taking those shots explicitly says you want Natasha, Serhild, and Sabine to go gloves off for a bit. Even if you don't. 😁

It'll be addressed, no worries.

I would note that I use sparring as a blanket term, but there have been somewhat more controlled tests as well. The aforementioned femur cracking was, IIRC, something they did, for pain tolerance and exposure/experience purposes, not immediately into combat, just feeling it out...and then Grey Wizards showed up? And they had to get healed and stop. Generally, they go 'full contact' but also work with blunted weaponry, pulling, etc. when it comes to other stuff as well.

It is pretty concerning, yeah, to a lot of people.

At the same time, they didn't start where they are now. It ramped up as the Jade Journeymen got better and better, until they became Jade Magisters. Carlotta and Karl are actually not nearly that good when it comes to active combat, but they've become superlative healers instead due to focus and training.

And they don't do mega krash super pain training every day, but they do do pretty hard sparring daily though. Blood is shed daily pretty much no matter what, admittedly.

"I've had my genitals pulped by a hammer made of ice before, what of it?" - Frederick von Hohenzollern

"It wasn't pleasant dear, no, but that was the point of you using the morningstar like that." - Arthur von Hohenzollern

"No, no, you're right. And now you know what it's like to fire a heavy blastgun. How is your shoulder, Sabine?" Magnus von Hohenzollern

If the word has spread, perhaps via our magicians who must have some weird bar stories to tell when they return to thir alma mater time to time, in the not so big (More or less a few dozen thousand if you count the people affiliated but not directly magical I think?) magical community of the empire I can only imagine the reputation of the Hoenzolern family, even more within the jade order, it must be hilarious or worrying depending on your point of view.

It has.

He slaps the puppet with his free hand, causing it to rock slightly in its moorings.

"This is something of my own creation, and yet there is much that could be done to improve the training of the militia, of those who come to the temple to learn the art of war and battle," he slaps it again before looking back at you. "And it is not good enough. Tell me, the rumors of the Hohenzollern training, up in Wulfenburg, are they true?"

"Depends on the stories," you raise an eyebrow.

"Full contact, shedding blood and breaking bone, sparring in as many combinations as possible, with as many different weapons as possible, for hours, twice a day," he says promptly. "Grievously wounding one another in an effort to learn, to experience, to test one another as harshly as possible. With the aid of a Jade Wizard or two to keep you going."

"You're well-informed," you say, crossing your arms.

"Everyone knows," he corrects, shaking his head, "Just most everyone dismisses it as insanity, hearsay rumors."

"And you?" Urgdug asks, hands on his hips.

"I think it's a novel use of the talents of the Jade College," he shrugs.

You smell her before you see her, the door sweeping open to show the templar swiftly moving to the side. It is a somewhat familiar smell, like that you've smelled wafting off of Jade Wizards and Spellsingers and so on in the past. Of plant life, of crops, of rich loamy soil and the sweet breezes that summer and spring can sometimes bring. But there is something which rather oddly smells like the moss and black roses that are grown in the Gardens of Morr to it. As well as a strength you've only associated with Wolfgang and those who seem even stronger with the Wind of Ghyran and magic in general. A Wizard Lord, then, her presence and aura unmistakable before you see her walking through the door. Though she still retains the whites of her eyes, the irises are a vibrant, glowing green. Her shoulder length white hair is shot through with thick green streaks, but you're more focused on the fact that her staff is topped by what looks like a green crystalline blade. There is also what looks like a bandolier of knives across her chest.

"Boris," she says archly, one eyebrow raised. "What on earth does -," her snide words cut off as she catches sight of you and Urgdug, but contrary to normal expectations her eyes then remain locked on you.

Against your chest, the Light of Summer seems to glow ever so faintly in the presence of so much Ghyran. Her pupils visibly dilate as she looks at you, then down at the amulet, then to where Brain Wounder is strapped to your belt.

"I see," she says with a dryness mostly associated with Nehekhara's Tomb Kings, "Carlotta and Karl's patron, and that of others. The inspiration for…," she gestures at herself and then at the Eagle of the North. "This."

"How long has this been going on?" You ask, looking between the woman and the Myrmidian.

"Last year," she sighs, hand going to her forehead. "Let me guess, you wish to test your mettle?"

"I didn't-,"

"Oh not you, of course, Count Hohenzollern," she says quickly, shaking her head before glaring at Hirtzeller. "I meant him."

There is some heat in the look they exchange now, and not all of it is nearly as antagonistic. At the same time, Hirtzeller sputters.

"It's perfectly-,"

"I don't want to hear it," she snorts. "Is this happening or not?"

"So, how exactly are we doing this?" You say while cracking your neck and rolling your shoulders out. "I'm assuming first blood isn't going to be enough."

"Of course not!" Hirtzeller chortles, hopping lightly and swishing his spear about. "Until surrender or being unable to live without aid from the good Lady Grünrinde!"

Said 'good Lady' makes a noise of such contemptuous disgust you'd imagine her to be looking at a dung collector's full wheelbarrow. Hirtzeller just smirks again at her, which makes the Wizard Lord roll her eyes. According to her, she's only been contracted since the past year, but the contrast between their relationship and the relationship between the Jade Wizards contracted to Ostland couldn't be more different. That and the fact that you swear that when she drifted close by you to take up a space under the awnings you could definitely smell the black roses grown in the Gardens of Morr makes you just a bit uneasy around her. Not even Wolfgang, who helped heal you many times in Karak Ungor managed to make your hackles rise like this Grünrinde woman.

This scene was a lot of fun, Hirtzeller (who leads the cult of Myrmidia) is a total bro, and he was a cool reminder than Frederick does still have martial equals in the empire, even if they're almost exclusively national leaders.

Freddy didn't had the light of summer at the time; the drinking competition was just after the Vampire War (turn 15), whereas the light of summer was won just before Karak Ungor (turn 23)

Definitively, yes, there was a significant uptick in quantity and quality of alcohol drunk by Frederick and the rest of the Hohenzollerns post KU as compared to pre KU. Frederick is the heaviest drinker of them all, by far admittedly, but the rest of the family isn't that far behind. By now I would hope that I've shown well enough by this point that Frederick is not the same man who went down into KU, in multiple aspects. Enough at least that it really shouldn't be a surprise that Frederick drinks enough and hard enough that it is, sort of obviously, somewhat beyond what is considered general human capabilities. At bare minimum he is a bigger drinker than any other human in Ostland and likely the Empire. Put another way, long ago in-game he won the drinking contest by technicality against Bugman due to the Brewmaster pre-gaming so heavily. He would not, necessarily, require that advantage if they tried again.

Now I kinda of want to write an omake about Freddy and Bugman having a rematch, both starting completely sober. :p

My man Hirtzeller! Ah, it'd be nice to have him with us on the battlefield one of these days.

If only we could have him T pose with Logan when we inevitably have to hash things out with Molatok…

Heh, I'm afraid the Dawi had one upped Freddy with the whole Gazul drink testing.

That does remind me, after the whole development of the Dwarf Quarters in Ostland postBugman; did Gurni ever came up to Ostland not exactly to visit Freddy in person, but for mercantile reasons? It's been a while since Nuln and I'm pretty sure Wolfenburg's become a real trade hub between with the drinking scene booming and engineering college.

As to omakes and more features of the Herd, I just don't seem to have the time and energy these days. And considering that soon I shall awaken as a pile of decrepit dust upon a clock's turning, here are some that I'd like to say have happened, but I've just not been able to properly write.

  • Frederick and Natasha sitting out on one of the battlements, drinking casually, looking up at a beautiful night sky and discussing the family, and themselves. Discussing the passage of time, getting older, even if they don't really feel like they are as much as they should be. Deciding not to think too hard about it, just spend more time checking out with the priests and wizards as necessary.
  • Magnus and Sabine taking their youngest trio on a flight through the air, below, through, and then above the clouds. Seeing the joy on those faces, even if one of them is somewhat befuddled about it all.
  • Frederick planning out an anniversary celebration for the death of Zacharias, for the family, for all of Wulfenburg, and is doing so alongside help from every part of the family. A semi-equal family feature, with Arthur planning a solemn remembrance ceremony as well as a joyous afterwards to celebrate the dead, Sabine tearing her hair out over how to shift money around, Magnus frustrated again at how his father translates his own talents and abilities into seamless superlative quartermastery, while he has to work at it that much harder but without the bite of bitterness of his earlier years.
  • Urgdug and his wife Cherag discussing ogre politics in Ostland, how their folk are doing compared to the others, schooling at the Greatbellow Academy and how it's changing things, but also remarking on how there are some things that they are just too different in - size, strength, appetites, lifespans, etc. But also finishing on how they still consider themselves Ostlanders first, more than anything else.
  • Serhild and Arthur discussing the horse trade business that Sabine set them up in, meeting with a few Ostland nobles looking to partake of the equines she's assembled already. An amusing side portion featuring some of their younger kids - as well as some of those of Magnus' branch - getting to ride on ponies instead of the larger horses. Magnus and Sabine largely background in favor of their kids, but present.
  • Tasha asserting dominance amongst the rest of the younger Herd, exerting seniority and experience in lighter youth spars, as well as in general. Some children are fine with it, some are not. Karola is upset that the others are listening to Tasha more than her, especially because Tasha is so much more casual with violence and pain - she did grow up largely taught by Frederick, Natasha, and the Engineers as much as the literally emotionally incapable Anna. Ori attempts to correct this, only to lose to Tasha in sparring, while Tasha informs Ori that she can't just do everything that Karola won't, to which Ori is uncomprehending and asks 'why not'. Tasha can't answer her and just helps her up.

The grand kids generation is so worrying lmfao. Like Tasha is right, Ori can't do everything Karola doesn't want to, especially with a family with the reputation as the Hohenzollerns have. But Tasha won't be elector countess while Karola will (unless bad things happen, which is unlikely) and Ori covering for Karola's weakness is ultimately a good thing.

Hrrrm.
Regarding Karola, Ori and Tasha inheritance debacle…
It all depends!
As I see it, so long as the kids remain willing to work together and stand together helping run the province and whatnot (Maaaybe we should talk to the Herd about that council covering up for that one Elector Count running around hunting and leaving his advisors to run his province and actually doing a decent job.)
Communally holding the reins of power together could enable specializations and just better management due to a larger shared AP pool to get things done with!
Or Chaos/chaos might come knocking with some nasty real-world history and have the grandkids do what Malagor, the two Black Arks and the Greenskins could not- break Ostland and turn Frederick's legacy into a pile of rubble and folk stories…
But I doubt that's going to happen short of the Dice going wild on us all soo we should be fine.

Tasha can't answer her and just helps her up.
I think Tasha actually would have an answer, and it would be because Anna no longer has the visceral block to prevent her from telling Tasha about Karak Ungor, even if she censors it a bit. Combine that with Tasha's hard earned academic prowess and growing skill at managing people via the herd...

"Why can't I do what Karola can't/won't?"
"Because you will fail, just like our parents and grandparents regularly fail when they spar. And when you do, Karola will die if she's not strong enough to be without you."

May or may not add in a line about Anna and Freddy going down hard in KU
