So, just mentioning, it was noted in the interlude by Scaldrithraxa that after a certain point of running out of its 'surplus' of bodies that what is effectively a sometimes mobile fungal network would 'return to relative dormancy' in its cavern.

So basically, this specific network of Ix has for some reason or another emerged from its lightless caverns and is rampaging in the Eastern half of the Middle Mountains.

If Ix was hyper-aggressive about spreading and what not, I guarantee you that the Empire would have become aware of its presence before now. After 2300+ years of the Empire surrounding the MM, there haven't been any big noticeable Ix excursions from their caverns. Above-ground at least.

At least it's only based of the Last of Us fungus and not the Flood. Ironic considering they share the common inspiration of the codyceps fungus.

I would argue that cordyceps predates Last of Us, plus the self-flaying/milky white curdled musculature claw stuff is pretty not Last of Us too >.>

Admittedly, it is impossible for people to not make comparisons given that the show is apparently well-liked by a lot of people. But still >.>

If we go after this stuff, I vote for full purging protocol. Fire, then steam, then magic, then more fire, then priests, then gunpowder, then more fire, then stamping on anything that's left with big, heavy boots.

The exposed musculature and fat honestly stood out to me more than fungal zombies. That's some very visually distinct horror and immediately brought me back to some of the depictions I've glanced at of that Nahuatl flayed god. The fact that it's name sounds fairly Lizardman adjacent only really adds to the fact this is some old and forgotten horror that has no business being seen in the Old World.

You know, the fungus may not belong to Nurgle, but this seems like an excellent opportunity for Papa Nurgle to whisper in the ears of someone who is infected (or thinks they are infected), "There is someone who can save you."

Honestly the most surprising thing about this new threat is the fact it can apparently highjack Greenskin spores.

Greenskins spores get everywhere and can adapt to damn near anything, but this new fungi can take them over. Maybe its even easier for them since they can 'talk' to greenskin spores?

Haha, maybe they don't necessarily follow the profile of Xipe Totec, but it's a neat connection between the flaying and the MayIncaztec mishmash that is Old One naming conventions, right? Good eye :)

The Sleeper managed to take over a bunch of greenskins with its mental domination powers+amulets and what not from Orcslayer, and Chaos Gods have managed to sorta get greenskins before - but other greenskins instinctually target them as enemies and 'false' greenskins.

so what ended up happening to that one myrmidian who did not deteriorate in mind?

To be continued, basically. Remains to be seen. For now, absolutely ruined face, imagine your entire face's skin sagging off of you and becoming like a sorta squishy stretchy playdough.

Like a much, much less adorable version of those dogs with the mega saggy faces, because the muscle/gristle/fat has becoming utterly disconnected with the epidermis in those locations.

He is in incredible pain without the Ix fungus cutting his pain sensors.

Fair enough, but those were usually unique cases/creative power use. Kinda like the chaos dwarfs making daemon possessed orcs who still had pretty good control over themselves.

Well, I dunno about you, but I think the Ix are pretty unique/creative. And I'm not saying that just because I invented them :p

But more seriously, the missing ingredient is metaphysical mass. There are not enough shamans/warbands/tribes/groups to provide the weightiness of enough WAAAAGH!! to ensure metaphysical supremacy. If there was a full on WAAAAGH!! going on, like a full true one not just a single screaming tribe charging a human village, the spores would find MUCH harder times trying to infect and spread. If these Ix-greenskins somehow got teleported to the Bonelands/Silver Pass amidst that WAAAGH!!...well, it wouldn't be pretty, but the Ix wouldn't really be in a great position there.

Oh yeah the Sleeper ! i loved that story, Poor Gotrex had not a good time there.
At least the Ix doesn't seems to be as dangerous
Still freakys shrooms need all the fire... ALL OF IT

Honestly, I was expecting the bugman from Orcslayer the moment I heard whiteskin and near-undead movement.

So I was surprised to see it was the original fauna before the old ones came along (Makes me wonder how it used to survive, making a colony of the local wildlife and continue infecting before hibernating when it runs out, only to continue when it hit critical mass again?).

But if this true, it would mean the Fungal Mushroom to be the prime suspect of Middenland army disappearance and prob still has them in reserve in the other side.

We're gonna have to take an action to inform them alongside the colleges the moment we have a chance.

Well at least we know ehat likely toke gunatar's wolves. Honestly the fact we can gain an full hold of it may actually become the new capital of the empire.

Of course! Just sharing other examples too. :D

Good point. So lack of proper WAAAGH power made it easier for foreign spores to take over.

Hard to imagine greenskins without WAAAGH power, even just a little bit.

I wonder if there's some way to make 'fake' sunlight to deal with this in the future. Like I doubt it's just UV light given our wizards notice some currdling of the winds involved in this but I think Azyr or Aqsy could probably make a sun artefact if we asked them to do

I think torroar's saying that they did have WAAAGH power, just not enough of it.

Bleh, underground dwelling fungal infection.

That thing is basically unkillable with the means the Empire has available to it.

Sure, the bodies and large seams of it can be located and destroyed, but there is no telling how far and how deep it has spread. You could never be certain you got it all.

The dwarfs packing up and leaving was a good call.

the elves might not know about whatever this thing is but the dragons of cathy might (since our local dragon knew) doesn't hurt to check in (this is semi serious and only because I want to see if any options from cathy)
