This is the first we know of journalists being "embedded" on a Starfleet ship. Like, ever. Even Jake Sisko didn't get to do that, and his dad was part Prophet.

To be fair being part God doesn't actually seem to cut you a Lotta slack in the Federation. That meritocracy at work!

The UFP is the sort of organization where if Jesus came and decided to join the Fleet they'd make him start off as a first-year in the Academy like everybody else. They careth not for your family ties.

You know, I want to send a colony ship but I don't want it to be a federation colony. I just want it to be further resources for the Kadeshi to use.

BTW, I don't know if someone else already mentioned this and it's too late to do anything about, but... @OneirosTheWriter, you shouldn't have the plan header line include a [PLAN] prefix, unless the plan itself is one task of a whole vote (like the Shipyard Ops vote, which had separate tasks for names and the build plan, and the build plan itself was a plan vote). So basically: only add [BLARG] prefix to a plan header if BLARG is just one task in the whole vote.

You know, I want to send a colony ship but I don't want it to be a federation colony. I just want it to be further resources for the Kadeshi to use.
I suspect the kind of resources WE would normally fit onto one of our colony ships, which is designed to take a few thousand colonists no more than a few weeks' travel from home, are kind of puny. At least, compared to the resources the Kadeshi stocked their mothership with, the one that is designed to carry (hopefully) hundreds of thousands of colonists to a new world infinitely far beyond any hope of reinforcement or resupply.

I want the potential from the journalists more (but not much more) than I want the security from the hospital ship.
It's a close run thing though, @Simon_Jester . Very close.
I do not think the Kadeshi will thank us for that.

"Wait... you could have sent doctors to help us in case of a disease outbreak among the last survivors of our species, or you could send a few people to write stories about our journey... and you sent the writers?"

I can understand wanting to send the journalists, but not doing so to the exclusion of the hospital ship or the engineering ship.

@OneirosTheWriter, instead of sending along the engineering and hospital ships, would it be possible to supply the equipment necessary to upgrade the Mothership with the requisite facilties? If yes, I'd imagine that would be a cheaper, but roughly equally effective and more secure action, though I suppose there might not be room for that.
It might be cheaper, but it would almost certainly involve a lot of time to stop and do design work to fit the equipment into the mothership. I really doubt the Kadeshi want to wait around for us to do that.

Second, in the event of a Warp Core loss without a replacement at hand, how feasible would either recovering and refurbishing it, or building or finding a replacement be?
If the warp core is lost, probably not good, though Leslie and Bazeck will see what they can figure out (see that omake I didn't have time to work on today). If the warp core is ejected but not lost (i.e. does not explode, is not stolen by aliens and irretrievable), then the available precedent (admittedly Voyager) indicates that the odds of refurbishing it are good.

[] plan Kitchen Sink

Not only does this protect Starfleet's investment, but it also helps the Kadeshi, whose lost homeworld might not have been lost in the first place if the Federation and Romulans hadn't been so paranoid about each-other. So I feel Starfleet somewhat owes them.

Also, journalism about Starfleet doing something other than beating on Orions would be very valuable in the Syndicate war. This is an excellent way to show the Orion people exactly what the Federation stands for and why it offers a better way than what is an ancient cultural institution for them. Even if we lose Stargazer, losing it without trying to hide anything... It is a powerful statement of Federation values.

The only part I'm doubtful of is the colony ship. I really don't think sending along a bunch of Federation colonists is desirable either for us or for the Kadeshi.

A part of me really kind of hates the Kadeshi. I think it's because they were introduced as "those guys from the video game you never played" and all the other players were so excited about them. It evoked a, "bah, what's so great about those creeps" backlash in me that's never really gone away.

I guess I should be happy that it turns this expedition into a "winner either way" for me. If they succeed it'll presumably generate some meager return that partially compensates for all the sacrifices the other players make on behalf of this race they love so much and I kind of hate. And if we get back a report that they all died, well, at least I can feel satisfied with that too.

Bah, Kadeshi. Bah. :rage:

[X][PLAN] Plan Material Support + Journalists

Good enough. Volatility here isn't a bad thing, and we actually have no ulerior motives, so...

New:

[X][PLAN] Plan Material Support + Journalists

All right, let's have the exodus documented for posterity reasons. It's a learning experience for everyone.

[X][PLAN] Plan Material Support + Journalists

Since I just ran a tally and doesn't look like it picked up my vote. That makes it 15 for Material support, 14 for MS+ Journalists, 9 for Kitchen Sink, and 6 for Moderate Support.

I'm not sure why, but my first impression was 'oh shit K'rrha's going to betray Samhaya.' I am rather glad that that didn't happen.

Because that's what would have happened to Kirk? Either that, or the colony administrator would be killed by the monster of the week.

And yeah, the colony ship I feel really hurts our message as explorers. It shows ulterior motives.

Is there already a plan for something that sends everything but the colony ship then?

The closest would be Plan Material Support + Journalists, but it also forgoes the Intel runabout.

In order of most to least in terms of resources spent:
1) Plan Odyssey's Extra Light Year (warp core requires delay to end of year) - 2 votes
2) Plan Kitchen Sink (only one with colony ship) - 9 votes
3) Plan Material Support + Journalists - 14 votes
4) Plan Material Support - 16 votes
5) Plan Moderate Kadeshi Support - 5 votes
6) Plan Spare Parts - 1 vote

edit: added current vote tallies

Captain's Log, USS Dryad, Stardate 24635.4 - Captain Sabek

There are a significant number of subspace wakes being detected tailward of Gaeni space. The area is one we have reason to believe is Licori space, but we are not certain. To help resolve this confusion, we are setting in a course to the closest system, 7 Aesir.

Captain's Log, USS Dryad, Stardate 24637.8

We are about to arrive at 7 Aesir. However, while en route, we have discovered that there warp field signatures of the converging wakes actually belonged to two different technology bases. It is likely that we may be arriving to the aftermath of a battle, and we will-

Go ahead, Bridge. Red Alert, raise shields, do not power weapons. I will be there promptly.

It appears that aftermath was something of an optimistic assessment.

Captain's Log, USS Dryad, Stardate 24639.9

That was distinctly more ... adventurous than it was intended to be. I will need to keep these logs from reaching Vulcan, as I fear my behaviour was ... downright human, in the most alarming sense of the word.

We arrived at the site of a major battle over a Licori colony world as the Ked Peddah made a major push. During the battle, a potent explosion from an orbital platform damage a evacuating civilian ship that was attempting to break orbit. That ship was on the verge of breaking up and was drifting into the heart of the battle zone. I made the decision to close to within range of the ship and evacuate the survivors. My first officer cautioned me of the potential ramifications of entering such a dangerous environment, and I informed him that I would note his protests in my log.

In fact, I welcomed his query of my actions, even though I had no intention of altering course. We successfully retrieved the survivors, as well as others from escape pods that were in danger, and then held off until the battle was over, and arranged to return each to their proper authorities

The Licori still hold the system, but have taken losses.

[Gain +5pp, +10 with Licori, +10 with Ked Peddah]

It got lost in the debate over the Kadeshi mission but I want to highlight this again.

What a god damn hero and Starfleet captain we have here. She or he detects a large number of warp signatures in a known war zone, and decides to fly their Miranda into the beehive to resolve a cartography question. Then he or she finds out that not only are they flying into a war zone, but towards actual fighting, and once again stays the course. Then finds out that they've arrived mid-battle, then dives into the battle zone with nothing but shields-up just to rescue civilians and survivors. And does so successfully enough and neutrally enough to impress both species, who are at war with each other.

IN A MIRANDA.

I'm expecting Captain Sabek on the Explorer Corps Panel next time I see it. If not then, in a few years. She or he seems to be made for it.
