We should give Nash command over Syndicate Ops.

Considering that the War on the Syndicate is a war of pp, Nash's prepaid pp savings plan would be nice.

Nash and Straak both want to keep the jobs they are good at so I think it makes more sense to keep them on it, and have been convinced that Langa is a good choice.

I guess people who are voting for Nash didn't really want the Betazoid Counsellors this year, huh? Try to think of that pp outlay in real terms as something you'd like to have and now won't get.

We do this, and it's very possible that Nash's third 5YM will be a net negative for us in pp terms, with her costing more than she makes.

Sure there is a chance of that, but it's not super likely.

Just look at the results of her last 5YM.
USS Enterprise
----

+30br
+20sr
+50rp
+70pp

+5 sr/year

Gain Tagh Pakot Mining Colony option, +10 (15) sr/yr
Discover +20br/year colony option at Fenris IV
Gain new research colony: Yel'urulausu [+5 (6)rp/yr]

+25 Relations with Indoria
+25 Relations with Caitians
Gain Apiata as Affiliates
+25 Relations with Apiata
Oversaw Betazoid Ratification
Met the Qloath
Did not cause temporal mayhem
+25 relations with Dawiar

Even if having her on the Enterprise is a net negative pp-wise, the other potential rewards more than make up for it.

Of course, because it was Nash that +70 pp was really only a +45pp. And on her third 5YM it would really only be a +25pp. If we had any other Captain in place, they might have made all the same rolls and really got 70 pp.

Her service on the last 5YM already was a net negative purely in pp terms (the pp earnings of the Enterprise exactly match the average of the other ships), the issue is that there is a real chance she will be a net negative overall (the Enterprise made disproportionally many contributions that did not end up as pp, but it's hard to say how much of that was due to her and how much due to the veteran crew in general). Being as much of a net positive as the alternatives is relatively unlikely in any case (at least on a veteran ship, putting her on a green ship would probably be worth 45 pp).

Honesty compels me to point out that the other explorer captains did pretty well too. Remember, it's not a choice between Nash and nobody. It's a choice between Nash and, say, Mrr'shan, who's got a darn good bonus herself.

Honesty ALSO compels me to point out that another captain in the same place would likely NOT have made literally all the same rolls. Given the number of events she encountered, Nash rolled at least twenty times during those years, not counting combat. Probably more than twenty since many events involve multiple rolls.

We don't know which rolls were close and which weren't. But given how 2d6 die rolls work, it is very likely that Nash's +1 bonuses to basically every single one of the rolls resulted in us passing a check we would have failed something like 10-15% of the time.

A captain other than Nash (say, th'Zhaliss) would probably have failed one or more of those rolls. Maybe a very important one like the "don't accidentally blow up Andorian history" check Nash had to make in 2308Q4. Given the complexity of the event, there were probably multiple rolls involved there, and given how the event teetered on the edge of disaster for some time, I strongly suspect at least one of the rolls was pretty darn close.

Yeah there's more to Nash than just her PP loss.

Given Nash's captain bonus was to crew rating and not ship stats, at least my headcanon is while exceptional like all of our Explorer captains, her genius is in leading, motivating, and supporting her crew. If this is the case, then she is someone who will be exceptional in the right higher position too. This is why I said before that I'd be excited to see her at Starfleet Academy, or Personal. I want her eye for talent and personal development working for all of starfleet and not just one ship.

On the other hand, there's more to Nash than just her +1 bonuses. She comes with costs that partially if not entirely offset her advantages.

(I will note that Enterprise gets an intrinsic +1 Presence that has nothing to do with her, and another +1 from Commander Leaniss, plus Zaardmani's sensor bonus that won't be coming back but helped a lot during the last mission, I suspect. So due to all the omake-writing and stuff, Enterprise has been in a great position to rack up all kinds of great stuff that has only a little to do with her)

I'd like that too, some day.

"I wanted to be a Warp Scientist!" "Well now you're fighting the Borg."

Given the number of our explorers that have suffered hilarious engine mishaps, this should be good.

I don't suppose we can pull a Kirk ala Star Trek The Motion Picture with a Commodore/Admiral ka'Sharren, can we?

edit: A possibly better example would be the aftermath of Star Trek IV.

Not happy that T'Rinta is missing out on her ship regardless of the bonus

Inside the Federation Council chambers President Jorlyth sh'Arrath has been blindfolded and is about to throw the ceremonial admiral's dart at a dartboard with the photos of the next potential leaders of Starfleet taped to it. She swings back when a windows shatters as a person jumps through it screaming "You'll never take me alive!"

Her throw goes wide and she hears a voice cry out in pain. Tearing off the blindfold she sees Nash ka'Sharren pulling the dart out of her arm and throw it on the ground. Then Seruk calmly enters the room and says "Captain ka'Sharren. You will accept your promotion to Commodore, effective immediately."

Nash's eyes narrow and start glancing around the room planning her escape when Jorlyth speaks up. "Actually Admiral Seruk, Captain ka'Sharren will not be promoted to Commodore." There's a brief spark of hope in Nash's eyes. "For breaking into the council chambers and being hit by that dart she's now the Admiral of Starfleet!"

Nash's eyes bug out before closing as she starts taking deep breaths before throwing her head back...

Train whistle, organ music, flock of ravens

Admiral Kahurangi looks up from her desk at Starfleet Command and says "That's the loudest piece of profanity I've ever heard."
