Except I am pretty sure this happened before N'Gir administrations, and Devs had to be dragged in screaming and kicking.
???

Not sure what you mean by this. Orions hit 500 during the moratorium e: and I think were what, ~400 during the Celos thing? They hit it after the Caldonians, in fact. If there's a reason she's getting a strip torn off, it'd probably be over the fact a longer ally is being left out.

Dev going Orion first makes perfect political sense when you remember they're in a sort of semi-coalition with mercantilist, and Orion leans mercantilist.

If we want to shoot Dev in the foot, we need to figure out which species will elect non-Dev Councilors and grit our teeth and just pay the 180pp to get them selected first. The Pacifists and Expansionist were only 3 votes short of a bulk accession, and both the Pacifists and Dev got 1 from the Orions. If the Caldonian both have a few major worlds and are likely to go strong Pacifist, getting them in first may be enough to break the Dev stranglehold.

Alternate proposal: how about we just stay in our own damn lane and not play politics?

N'Gir's been personally rude to us but the Devs haven't exactly, you know, done much to really fuck with us and in fact agreed with us on the importance of stopping Licori star-killers. Good luck getting the same out of the pacifists.

I honestly think it's not worth worrying about to the point of spending 180pp. I think most of us have a mild dislike of the Development faction, certainly not enough to justify this level of obstinance. And at the end of the day, Starfleet is supposed to be subordinate to the council.

That doesn't mean we can't act, however.

If for some reason, we have nothing better to do, ensuring a beneficial ratification would be good.

I meant that the groundwork was laid under a different administration, and Devs were not particularly happy to be on board.

I'm not actually that surprised to see Orion D-seats, if anything I expected more of them. I am pretty surprised at that one H though. MOO players unite? As I said, I have no problems with party itself But I am not going to vote for them as long as N'Gir is the running presidential candidate

Alternate proposal: how about we just stay in our own damn lane and not play politics?

Absolutely not

No rest until Stesk-senpai is the President.
Incidentally, I think I found a perfect way to bury the hatchet with our Cardassian friends...

I wonder if a 6th party might come up.
No incentive for one; it'd be more likely to dilute influence further than to help anyone's cause much. It's worth noting that many many parties isn't usually good for a parliamentary democracy; a coalition government made up of, say, four or five distinct factions tends to be pretty unstable.

Ugh, more Development Dipshits...
The Developmentalists just lost strength in the Council

Also, calling them all 'dipshits' bothers me. The Development Party has yet to do anything I consider unambiguously harmful to the Federation's best interests, and many of their key talking points are things that actually do make considerable sense. The Expansionist Party may be most in line with what we want to do, but that doesn't make their opposites into 'dipshits.'

I'd honestly wouldn't be so against Development if not for N'Gir. I personally hope that there's a break in the party and she gets sidelined in favor of different candidate. But I'd welcome the alternative of Seyek/Qloathi as well as original four elections gimping the D too.
I'll honestly be satisfied if N'Gir stays in power and just behaves less abrasively.

She's not an antagonistic figure to us because of her policies. She's an antagonistic figure to us because she comes across as abrasive, bullying, and mean-spirited towards our player-avatars.

A fair number of councilors that were, at one point, anti-Federation-ascension, but may well have changed their tune after the brutal slog against the Syndicate. Also Canada McLaren is bizarre for multiple reasons, not the least because he's human.
Leslie:

"Take it from me, if you ever meet a really normal human, check to see if they're some kind of pod person. Or a robotic Stepford wife. Or something like that..."

Probably should thank N'Gir for the new tack then. :V

Yeah that... was a complete surprise. Like I don't think anyone expected Hawks. Although I guess it makes sense -- if we assume Dev, Merc, and Expansionist went for former government officials from CA and TuP, it's possible people got tired of the two ossified political movements (COUGH) and instead went for someone who they saw as being outside the traditional two-three party spectrum. IE, they voted more for the person than the party. Huh, I guess that makes Tooph kind of a Macron/DeGaulle cross. Can't wait for her to have a shake-off with N'Gir.

I see no reason to influence the ascension process.

Sooner or later all will become full members and add their councillors. Interfering now will just give a slight, temporary boost to a faction, and that's not even guaranteed since we don't know how people will vote.

N'Gir leaving Titans like Stesk and Langford out will not make her many friends. Especially since many on the Council are already wary of her due to rushing into things she has no or little idea of without consulting sufficient advise.

We should stick to our job, and let the Council do theirs.

Fixed up the Council Sheet.

Though, @OneirosTheWriter I'm missing the Gaeni and Orions' election schedules for their Councillors.

(Also did we ever do something about the Gaeni technically not being democratic?)

This.

N'gir is insufferable, but the dev party as a whole has done nothing to draw our ire. Sousa got some good work done with them on occasion.

Personal theory time: my feeling is (contrary to how it's portrayed in Articles of the Federation novel series) the Federation has consistent practices for how it elects Councilors. You might have an ossified semi-oligarchy as a sub-government, but for a Federal election your people get to put ballots in boxes for their councilor directly, end of story. If you can't handle that, or can't guarantee the security and fairness of the process, you are not ready to join.

For those curious: in Articles of the Federation they say every member world/state decides how they pick councilors. Bajor's are, IIRC, nominated by the Council of Ministers while Earth's are directly elected.

A bit of a slap given the Expansionists & Pacifists were the ones that got the Orion intervention effort going. And specifically Stesk was instrumental in setting up the aid package to Celos. Though admittedly the Vulcans are less likely to be offended by political maneuvers like this I guess...

Is N'Gir just really confident of Development maintaining their big lead over all the other parties? Because that seems to me to be a misstep given the upcoming election for all 4 original members next year in Q2 (probably before any more accessions will happen).

I don't think this is about snubbing the Expansionists & Pacifists or N'Gir thinking Development is secure (though it might be). N'Gir dislikes, maybe even hates, the Federation Old Guard, or atleast the amount of influence they hold in the Federation. Humans, Andronians, Tellarites and Vulcans were the sole members of the Federation for about ~120 years. Enough time for the development of political influence groups and other interest groups, the creation of unwritten rules, time to both create regulations that are favorable to you or adapt to those that aren't. There's also the amount of indirect influence the Old Guard holds due to the fact that the bulk of the personel and management are (or were) provided by them.

New members need to adapt to that and play by rules that they didn't design, which might activly work against their plans under the guess of 'Things don't work like that around here' and powerful groups that want to exploit that advantage by using the new members as extra resources for their own gain without looking at the needs of these new members.

New members don't enter the Federation on a level playing field, the Old Guard holds a disproportionate amount of influence for its size, which while logical, is ample cause for resentment. So on that front this would be N'Gir making a point on that.

Of course I could be seeing way too much in N'Gir's issues with the Old Guard and be completely wrong here while also picturing the political process way darker than it is. If people think I'm wrong here, feel free to ignore this.

I just like to believe that N'Gir has legitimate grievances she wants to address and that she isn't the cardboard caricature people often claim she is.

You guys have inspired me, and I am currently in the middle of planning an Elections of 2318 omake where pundits review prospects of all 25 worlds. One thing I would like suggestions on. What are the major events that have occurred in or near the Federation since 2312? Here is the list I have so far:

Big Events since last election in 2312:
  • In 2312 still in middle of the Federation's Anti-Syndicate Campaign, which was successfully concluded.
  • Treaty of Celos with Cardassia
  • Expansion into the Gabriel Expanse
  • Accession of Apinae and Indoria and Gaen, and most recently Orion
  • Arcadian War
  • Normalization of relations with Romulan Empire (Treaty of Mars)
  • Klingon-Romulan War
  • Fall of the Sydraxian Heirarchy
  • "The Cross-Cultural Renaissance" - The Planets Media Promotions, established by the University of Betazed in 2314 (Public Media research technology) has been promoting a Federation-wide exchange or Architecture, Music, Plays, Literature, Etc, that is reinvigorating culture across the Federation. Particularly big on homeworlds, as colonies are often too busy/insular for such sweeping cultural movements, Particularly strong advertisement for Expansionists on homeworlds, not so much elsewhere.
See, I made that last one up because I didn't want the list to be only foreign policy stuff that Starfleet deals with. Other suggestions?

One possible explanation for the orion H is that some orions want revenge against the cardassians for propping up the syndicate for as long as they did.

If that was the case I think it would be Celos that was the Hawk seat, not Alukk. Interestingly, it's the only Homeworld that the Hawks hold. Theoretically all seats in the Council are equal, but it's hard to imagine that the homeworlds don't swing some extra weight in debate. They're likely to control their internal member budgets, for one thing.

so unless something weird happens between now and next pit here what i would like too happen at pit
push for sydrax
push for sotaw
push for gretarans
push for the septs
that should at least keep things in line i hope

N'Gir just rubs me the wrong way. Everything she does manages to annoy me one way or the other so I do kinda hope she's just a big shithead in universe and the original four get tired of her and no confidence her ass. /rant over

@Briefvoice
We've had first contact with the ISC, Horizon, and the Ferengi in that time too.

Well, comparing the commentary on the last election...

The starbase at Shrantet might be significant. Though not sure if that will make it more likely to favor the incumbent Hawk councilor or if they feel safer now with Klingon attention turned elsewhere to vote differently.

Also, Andoria had a lot of influence in peacekeeping for Orion and Caldonia, especially the latter which will probably be both recent news and the next accession, and so might influence public opinion a lot.

I just like to believe that N'Gir has legitimate grievances she wants to address and that she isn't the cardboard caricature people often claim she is.
If she has legitimate grievances, I don't think this is the right way to go about showing it. It's way too obvious, and sows divisions within the council (and perhaps even her own party, given they're majorly backed by the Tellarites and their powerbroker is Vulcan).

True, but I don't think that would necessarily affect politics yet. Mostly just more 'meeting people far away'.

That's right, we kept their ships out of Caldonia but they did sent police, didn't they?
