Yeah, but if they have multiple systems under their control, "Interstellar" is entirely valid as a descriptor.
And "Commonwealth", while in our RL context pretty much only being British, is a pretty generic term.

I mean, it's not I guess "the best name". But it doesn't come off as any more ominous than anything else?

Then you have a descriptor, The British Commonwealth, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the English Commonwealth (Protectorate, whatever). The Dominion of Canada. A bunch of states on the American continent that are currently united. The closest I can think in human history to pretend to that level of universality is Imperial china and the Soviet Union. Nations that didn't have good track record in their interactions with their neighbors.

I think that might be part of my issue, honestly, this is a single species polity using such a broad and universal term for their single people. Like, it'd be like the European Union deciding to call itself the "GLOBAL DIRECTORATE" inexplicably. Even if it's a choice made totally innocently it is very offputting.

The UPF is a united federation of some planets, not THE GALACTIC FEDERATION. Even the Romulans, in all of their Hubris, merely style themselves as The Empire of the Romulan People, and not THE GLORIOUS HARBINGER OF UNIVERSAL ROMULAN SUPREMACY. It implies a lack of need for any other polity, for being distinguishable with others. And coming from a powerful single species polity obviously surrounded by other species it's Just A Tad Ominous.

I don't see it. They're a commonwealth whose territory extends across interstellar distances. It's a perfectly accurate name, and there's nothing in there that makes it seem like they're claiming all of space. Interstellar /= universe. It just means between two or more star systems.

Interstellar Commonwealth has no sinister meanings to me either. It neither means all of space nor dominion over other species. It is, for example, the kind of name a species would give to a collection of colonies who were at one point independent but banded together for some kind of common good. Say, mutual defense, just as an example.

You did good Enterprise USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B, you did good. O7

I' m notreally concerned by the name of our newest peers, more by their standoffish attitude.
But there are several possible reasons for that, from bad relations or expiriences with others to a more xenophobic streak or different departements are responsible for first contact .

Also who are the Ashidi? I can't remember who they are.

Captain's Log, USS Enterprise, Stardate 25588.4 - Captain Samhaya Mrr'shan

We have identified new subspace wakes near the Aspen system, on the fringes of Seyek space. There are two distinct signatures, both of a type unknown to us. The prospect of meeting not one, but two new civilisations is thrilling! We will make best speed to the Aspen system and introduce ourselves!

It turns out one of the subpsace wakes we encountered was not so unknown as first thought. A Konen explorer orbits the world, a colony of the Anshidi people.

The Konen have not answered our hails, but our Betazoid Head Counsellor informs me that she believes the Konen telepaths are attempting to investigate us from afar. I have spoken with my science officer and chief engineer, and we believe a phased shell of delta radiation will limit the effectiveness of the Konen telepathy. I asked her what her own insights could tell her of the Konen. What she told me was quite worrying. The Konen are polite to a fault, but all the more savage beneath the surface for that. They are not a people one should become a prisoner of. My intelligence aide tells me that much of their fighting with the Cardassians was vicious, and ended mostly by Konen shock at the disdain to that manner of affront shown by the Cardassian people.

As for the Anshidi, we have made first contact, and have been able to determine that, despite being trading partners of the Konen, they are not Cardassian affiliates. They are a rather paranoid people, to be honest!

Limiting their telepathy seems to have forced the Konen to open hailing frequencies. Their explorer is a Whisper-class battlecruiser, and is no slouch as a combatant. However, they appear to be abiding by the Treaty of Celos and not threatening us. In fact, it seems they were here simply to hammer out a trade deal, a task which has concluded. They are breaking orbit and returning to their homeworld.

The Ashidi have cautiously welcomed us, and will accept envoys from the Diplomatic Service. They are a species relatively short in stature with low forehead bone crests and hornlike protrusions from the back of their head, with a suspicious streak a mile wide. Of course, if I lived this close to the Cardassians and telepaths like the Konen, I'd be deeply suspicious too!

[New Race encountered: Ashidi, 50/100 starting relations]
The Ashidi are a species to the south (rimwards) of the Seyek whose only characteristic we know of is "paranoid". As a species smack in between us and the Ashalla Pact there will be some competition to get them on-side, hence some urgency in diplo-pushing them, or if not urgency, we can't really let it wait for years and years.

It might just be that they wanted to get someone with the authority to have serious discussions.

I agree. I've also come up with an alternative reason for their odd reaction. Each planet in the IC is only loosely bound by a central government, and while they have their military ships work together, no one group may contact any races they encounter, in order to prevent political infighting to at least some degree. The seventh ship was the representative for the IC as a whole, and the first 6 were representatives for their colonies, at least their major ones.

It may simply be that they take civilian control of the military very seriously and that the military can't perform first contacts. Of course this makes little sense in this setting but hey.

I'll note that they rushed the Ambassador in from what must have been a civilian world - there would be no other reason to have a civilian vessel handy if there wasn't a colony within a few days travel.

I still want to understand what's up with these crystal monsters, btw. Was the one the Seyek and Konen fought the same species as the others? If not, which kind was the big one that Chad just fought? Was one type created by the Licori? Etc.

Turns out the reason the crystalline entities keep showing up is because the Enterprise stepped on one of their eggs once.

Huh, wonder if the egg's larvae just barely survived but went into some kind of stasis while it repaired itself off of space flotsam and jetsam, then it woke up just as they were abandoning the ship while trapped backwards in time. As I assume the crystalline entities reproduce by calving off miniature versions of themselves, we could then be looking at a causal loop.
