The more I think about it, the more diplo-pushing the Honiani and Yan-Ros makes sense. We'd probably be able to get them both to +300 fairly easily, which would make them more likely to get involved in the upcoming war. The Yan-Ros might even enter the GBZ on our side.

Hold your horses a bit there. At 300+ we would have to defend them if the Syndraxi lashed out, too; and we're not sure they've got much of a fleet to menace the Sydraxi with. We need them to at least have a credible ability to not get rolled under.

Looks at front page. @OneirosTheWriter I think you copied down the wrong set of Captain's bonuses for T'Rinta.

That there is Demora Sulu's bonus.
"What!? Me, Demora Sulu!? I am a Vulcan torpedo enthusiast, not that dashing, outstanding Captain who should be made an Explorer Corps commander..."

Nothing is ever as it seems with that family around ¬.¬

Edit: fixed

Here's an idea, could be stupid, could be brilliant.

We take the D7s the Romulans don't want anymore off their hands for cheep, rip out the guns, and convert them into freighters. We'll finally solve our lack of cargo ships and earn brownie points with the Romulans all in one go.

Maybe, but I see two issues. One the Romulans are in full war preparedness mode, and they don't have a combat cap like us. If they're selling ships the ships are probably on the verge of a core containment failure. Two, D7's are small ships, and so lack the most important feature of cargo ships, that they can carry a lot.

Finally caught up with this quest. Easily in the top three best quests across SB/SV for me. It manages to get that Star Trek feel that gets missed way too often.

As for that current affiliate push, we should definitely get the Yan-Ros asap for one very simple reason. We'll have them on our ships when an inevitable boarding attempt by the Caradassians happens and then we can watch the hilarious image of the Yan-Ros crew punting them back into space.

Point.

Just strap cargo modules to the sides.

Edit: Another point; Freighter are slow and vulnerable, they're H1 L1 D1. Cargo-D7s would be H2 L2 D3. Three times the speed and twice the protection.

I'm actually starting to get curious as to what the Dylaarians have been up to in the GBZ. We are focused so much on the other two that we've completely forgotten them.

I think we didn't pay attention because they're like 45 light years from our starting position, we're not so worried about them openly attacking us because of how chill they seem about everything except copyright, and they've never actually done anything to us.

The catch is, yes, that if they quietly build forward bases far enough forward, it could cause us real problems. For example, we're trying to push forward into the Gabriel Expanse to 'cut off' the Sydraxians from the Cardassians. If the Dylaarians can secure positions in the center of the Expanse, then the detour Cardassian convoys have to take in order to reach Sydraxian space winds up being a lot shorter, and the strategic advantage we gain is considerably less.

So I agree we should pay more mind to them, as we build up a bit and are in a better position to do more reconnaissance further forward.

We've been ignoring them, Red-Lighting attacks on them. All with the intent of eventually turning them to our side.
There's a difference between "not attacking" and "not knowing what they're doing." I think the distances involved, and the risks involved in pushing scout ships so far forward while the Cardassians are still active, have more to do with the latter.

Of the three opponents, they have started the furthest away from us. Our ships have probably not yet come within a map sector of each other yet.

No seriously, I'm sober. Just thicken the D7s neck a few meters, add attachment ports for four rows of cargo modules, rip out the guns, give it a 50 K lightyear tuneup and done.

Hey if we can tow whole ships reliably why can't we tow shipping containers HUH? Solves our shipping problem in one fell swoop.

How many tractor systems on one of our ships?
How many shipping contains can one tractor system hold on to at once?
What is the chance of failure of each tractor system? (Less relevant when towing another ship because you would put ALL the tractors on the one target, so one fails, you have redundancy)
How well can the shipping containers and their contents handle the acceleration when they are outside of the ships structural integrity field? (Possible the big one?)
