Problem is that we already have a significant backlog due to all our recent expansion, it's going to take a while for a single shipyard to catch up. Considering Chen's bonus, it might actually be a good idea to just push a single large wave of freighters. They're extremely cheap in materials (at least the generic freighter from the front page) and they're unlikely to draw from our personnel pool, so we could follow up with a wave of simultaneous Excelsiors.
What's the minimum berth size for freighter construction?

We really should consider spacing out some of our starship construction to fit in some freight haulers, in addition to the dedicated facilities we're putting together at Amarkia.

If there was ever a specific option, we might, but it hasn't been presented to us at any of the yearly shipbuilding schedule turns. So it's not so much "we should consider" as "not an option". Likely because if it ever were presented as an option, there would immediately be a HUGE thread bandwagon to treat it as mandatory, trampling over all good sense. Not presenting the option is the only way to protect us from ourselves.

Today I will be continuing our exploration of the regions near the Licori, looking to pick up some information. I met with the Captain of the USS Selaya yesterday. The Diplomatic Service has them on taxi duty again, conveying their ambassadors to meet representatives of Licori noble houses.

That was also the ship that ferried the Council members to Celos for those negotiations, as I recall.

Captain's Log, USS Vigour, Stardate 25092.8 - Captain Nag fop Haduk

An automated distress beacon in the fringes of Betazoid space, on their coreward edge, has been activated. The beacon belongs to an expedition team who are conducting a level three suitability survey on a Class K world. They are looking to potentially terraform and adapt it to Betazoid life.

I'm not sure what has gone wrong, so we will have to be prepared for anything.

Rather surprising that the two sector Constellations got pulled for duty, but the Hood did not.

Ambassador's Log, Morshadd, Ambassador Elisa Bairn, Stardate 25094.2

The arrival of investigators from the Council has provided me with sufficient resources to begin properly looking into the root causes of the Licori-Ked Paddah conflict. Hopefully it will pave the way to new, more effective avenues of mediating the conflict.

As near as we have been able to tell so far though, the basic story is correct. An escalating series of reckless Mentat experiments led to the Ked Paddah deciding to take drastic measures. Now, I have to say, this is a delicate point: do we consider the declaration to be an act of aggression? The Ked Paddah suffered no direct injury from the Mentat scientists, but nonetheless they viewed the safety of the galaxy to be at stake, and declared war. For the Arcadian Empire, that is to say, the Licori, this is unquestionably an unjustifiable act of aggression. For the Ked Paddah, however, it was simply a matter of defending themselves and others from the threat of rogue experiments.

Notably, the noble houses of the Licori have heavily constrained their Mentats since the start of this conflict.

Ah, another one of those classic Star Trek ethical dilemmas. I don't know; I can see the Ked Paddah point of view, but this isn't some abstract point of ethics. The war they started has killed a lot of people and blown up ships. Was it really necessary? You can see why the Licori would be outraged. They never did any harm to the Ked Paddah, and now their people are dead and their planets are conquered.

Captain's Log, USS Odyssey, Stardate 25095.1

Our investigations has returned very odd results on a sensor sweep through one of the inner planets of the Kappa Tau star system. Based on tachyon spectrum reports, there is a solid and sustainable vein of duranium ore, with a number of other exotic compounds used in warp coils.

[+5pp, discover new colony option, Kappa Tau [+!5br/yr]

I'm glad we had a success, but 'bulk resources' aren't so much in short supply right now.

Captain's Log, USS Thirishar, Stardate 25095.3

This is not going very well, unfortunately. This group is one that Sector Command had really hoped to arrange an envoy last month. Unfortunately, because we couldn't drop by, they have had no one around to remind them that this is an absolutely horrible idea.

Thankfully, popular support is with the government. However, it will take sometimes to stymie the attempts of this new agitator group, especially given their fanaticism.

[Lose -5pp, -10 relatons with the Caldonians]

Grrrr. Another failure from the Thirishar. That ship seems to fail every other Captain's Log or so. Big thumbs down to Captain Norkair ch'Gharist. He better shape up, or ship out.

Sector Commander's Log, Gabriel BZ, Stardate 25095.5 - Rear Admiral Rachel Ainsworth

The reinforcements for Task Force 1 are now making their way through to Collie. I'm going to run a pair of battle exercises with the new sector command to get some experience into this group before we take them out to face the Sydraxians. This is crucial on two fronts. One is learning to maintain discipline under stress ... and the other is the fact that I have been quietly warned that under no circumstances at all am I to launch the attack within a week of the Apiatan or Indorian ratifications. Apparently it might make people agitated.

I'm trying to run a campaign here!

One thing that is fast becoming clear, however, it's that with all the construction and infrastructure projects I have in mind, I'm going to need more freighters. I'll have to ask Vice Admiral Eriksson if the Rigellians, United Earth, or the Tellarites will be interested in loaning a few.

Maybe if they get a piece of the pie in return.

I believe auxiliary yards finishes in 2314 sometime. I think next snakepit we need to ask development to expand it. Also we may be able to yellow light some other members if they provide cargo ships.

ouch, is it just me or have we been failing events more?
We DID empty out most sectors so we can send a sizable fleet to the Gabriel Expanse, so we have fewer ships rolling dice.

What's the minimum berth size for freighter construction?
From the front page:

Generic Freighter 2260-Now [150m 300k t]
C0 S1 H1 L1 P1 D1
Cost[30br, 10sr, 2 years], Crew [O-0, E-2, T-1]

With 300k t of mass, I don't think there is a single shipyard out there which can't build them. This is assuming of course that we also use this model.

Bascially, you'd be agreeing to put off new Renaissances for an extra couple of years. Is that really a good idea?

Anyway, from the front page:
Generic Freighter 2260-Now [150m 300k t]
C0 S1 H1 L1 P1 D1

Key word in my sentence was 'remember'. And wasn't the Syndaxian one sabotaged? Of course, that's also a type of failed, true.

Edit: Where do I find the currently available (empty) shipyard berths?
Yep, that's a failure type. If we'd successfully countered the Cardassian actions around the Sydraxian first contact we'd probably be discussing the upcoming Sydraxian ratification.

Aren't the Romulans and Klingons on the brink of going to war with each other? Shouldn't we pay at least a little attention to that? If only to make sure they keep out of our space.

We should definitely build more auxiliary shipyard capacity when we get the chance, and quite frankly we should do so for our normal shipyards too. Anyone trying to use the argument that having more berths than we're currently planing on using is somehow a bad thing is being silly for several reasons.

First, the Federation has been expanding at a rapid rate which doesn't look to be ending anytime soon and we will inevitably need more shipyard capacity of both types as time goes on.

Second, we don't even remotely have as many berths as we need now anyway. Our issues with auxiliaries should be obvious, and we have no spare capacity for damaged ships despite the fact we're about to get into what could very well be a particularly brutal fight in the GBZ.

Third, any spare capacity we have is hardly likely to sit idly by, or has everyone who has been arguing against having more yard space forgotten that we often loan out our extra berths to the member worlds? I certainly hope that people think that the Excelsior's they been building have been worthwhile, and I rather imagine that they'd be happy to use any spare auxiliary yard capacity we might end up having too.

Of course the specifics of what we build, where we build it, and when we do so are certainly up for debate given we often have other priorities that are more important to spend PP on, just don't try to play off our current capacity as being perfectly fine for all our needs, especially when we've had several unsubtle hints recently that it isn't.
