lets try and open that inner part for options.

This isn't about skimping, the position of the impulse engines on the half saucer is great.

And honestly I'm begging us to do something different. If we start on full saucers now we're never getting the cool alternatives back.

I recognize that full saucer is probably strictly better, but I really like the aesthetic of the half.

I like the changes to the prototype system. Gives us more reason to risk it and push the envelope.

I like the aesthetic reason and want to see where it goes. Plus it does mention the possibility to offset the downside.

It's not quite a nuclear HEAT warhead. Normally in space a nuclear explosion would just emit gamma rays in a sphere. A Casaba-Howizter traps those gamma rays in a beryllium radiation case, directing them through a hole into a propellant plate which vaporizes it into a high velocity plasma jet.

So most of the energy of the explosion is directed towards the target, and the jet is very narrowly focused so the warhead can be detonated from much further out, so the missile doesn't have to cross the innermost point defense zones where laser PD becomes exponentially more effective.

The PD argument isn't all that relevant in Star Trek specifically, but the standoff range also means the missile can cope better with any evasive maneuvers.

...Now that I think about it, THAT might be what Star Trek calls a Plasma Torpedo. So the full name would be "Casaba Fusion Plasma Torpedo" or something. One step above the somewhat shaped charge fusion torpedoes we just got.

Oh and

Personally I'm hoping that it opens up the chance for larger secondary hulls. Never much cared for how fragile federation ships look.

Put some meat on those metaphorical bones rather than looking like the ship equivalent of a stick figure.

I've decided to change my vote. I think full saucer is probably the better choice, but others are right, rehashing canon just isn't as fun.
