[X] Atomic Torpedoes (Prototype)
So it has come to this. I pleaded every dam time to go for industry so that we could get stuff like this on the NX-class. Seems that it is time to splurge. No more pleading for cheap stuff. We need to make the Nx the most killy thing we can that means we need torpedoes and at least a dozen(12! or even more if we can get away with it) Phase cannons.

[X] Tycho City Expansion (+8 Industry)

Nukes seem like a step back tech wise, and not a great look given recent human conflicts just before first contact.

I know that SV has a lifelong love affair with Making Number Go Up, and I sympathise. But remember that sitting on a giant pile of Industry like a big hoardy dragon does precisely nothing for us if our ships can't fight. We have a large qualitative gap we need to close.

Atomics were the bread-and-butter weapon of the Earth-Romulan war as stated in TNG, because photonic torpedoes were still too rare and expensive to be mass produced. It's very similar to the dynamic you see between photon and quantum torpedoes during the Dominion War. These are highly effective and lethal weapons which will add significantly to our offensive capability and are almost mandatory if we don't want to get skullfucked by the Romulans.

Eight industry is half the value of a single freighter, and is a pittance in comparison to ensuring our warships can fight effectively against our adversaries. Keep in mind also that the next ordnance research after we unlock Atomic Torpedoes is likely to be Photonic Torpedoes, which we want to obtain ASAP.

so adding nothing we add 11.52 at the end of 4 years
adding tycho we end up with an 17.92
so that be an extra 6 to 7 industry after 4 years

Just imagining the Vulcans watching humans start loading nukes onto all their ships.
Vulcan: As predicted, considering their primitive and aggressive social mindset.
Vulcan 2: Yes, we should delay the Warp 5 project more, they aren't ready yet.

Admiral Forrest: If a Phase Canon can't solve it, we do it the old way. Nuke'em!

+8 Industry helps offset what we spent for that order of six Zheng He's, and we're still just keeping to the positive with some serious penny-pinching and sacrifices to the design.

[ ] Atomic Torpedoes (Prototype)

Anyone can comment on this? Given the next ships it the NX class I am leaning towards this tech

If we take TNG technical manual numbers, a TNG era photon torpedo has 1.5kg of matter reacting with 1.5kt of antimatter. Resulting explosion is around 65.4 Megatons.

The highest megaton (fusion) nuclear bomb modern humanity has built (and tested) is the Tsar Bomba, with 50 Megatons. Atomic (fissile) devices are significantly weaker hydrogen devices. Atomic devices are around the 1 Megaton range.

Do keep in mind photon torpedoes have displayed much greater explosive value on the TV screen than the numbers suggest. Anywhere ranging from 65.4 Megatons (TNG manual) all the way to 500 Megatons (calculated from TV screen explosion size). Also that these are TNG era numbers/explosions which we are currently 300 years away.

As for Vulcans and nuclear weaponry, I doubt they care. If they're throwing photon torpedoes around against the Andorians/Klingons they're more likely scoffing at the primitive weaponry. And these will be atomic devices, much weaker than fusion devices.

I... seriously doubt that, old fashioned A-bombs have been outdated for a long time, and that's IRL.

Seems more likely to me that Atomic is just the term used for all nuclear weapons by star fleet due to history diverging.

We are indeed ship designers, and by saving annd increasing industry capacity as we have been we'll be able to go ham on the NX and make in an absolute beast. 8 Industry is a lot for us right now and gives us a ton of room for design freedom.

Problem is, thanks to penny pinching: We have at least three technologies to prototype on the NX, with more on the way: Atomic Torpedos, Type-1B Coils, and Impulse Engines. That's not counting the Warp 5 engine itself, all the other fiddly shit the Complex saw fit to throw at us, and Archer trying to be a fething superhero with a prototype vessel!
