Skates are notably incredibly low on supplies, not sure if moving them to independent duty is the right call, even if external nacelles would free up some space. It would also make them rather flimsier, and increase their targeting profile - not to mention I'm fairly certain the impulse engines are currently mounted where external nacelles would be.
a refit might be adding a tail with a shield generator so we can make them our main system defense boats.

I wonder what we get to build next. An explorer to get back out there in peace mode? Probably time to prototype some better warp travel too.
That will have to come after rebuilding our military. We took staggering losses in the Battle of Cheron, and the Romulans just demonstrated that another attack on Earth is not only possible, but even more feasible than before.

Kind of annoyed that humanity took by far the most losses and damage out of the entire coalition, especially in the final battle, where the supposedly faster Andorian and Vulcan fleets seemingly just sat back and watched as we got savaged by the entire Romulan fleet.

Either way, I expect a shitload of Skate-class warships to be pumped out. An updated Enterprise-class might be on the table, since it fulfills both a military role and an explorer/patrol role.

But holy shit will our allies fucking give us shield technology already goddamn. We shouldn't have to beg for them to give us crumbs years after the Romulans steal Vulcan and human tech mid-war.

In all honesty I don't really see the Skate surviving the end of the war. They're so reliant on other ships to operate they don't make sense in the trade protection role because they have very limited range, and the least space for refits. I suspect the Skate will go into mothballs or remain just tied to the Mars Defense Perimeter while we focus on other designs. As far as designs of the future I think make sense:

Enterprise-refit: our class best suited to further development as a heavy cruiser and light explorer, I think. Most space for a new warp engine.
Ranger project: new heavy explorer, in the dreadnought weight range.
New frigate: a peacetime replacement for the Stingray would make a lot of sense. Probably somewhat larger, with a little more science and engineering to do colony assistance. But needs to fight pirates and have good cruise endurance.

NX and Thunderchild class could be conceivably upgraded given they're larger hulls. Stingray and Skate are on a timer though. I doubt that the Stingray will be seen as worth upgrading, it might be time for a clean sheet design, and the Skate was optimized for mass production in war time, its probably going to be very hard to upgrade since it's so small.

I honestly think a replacement for the Zheng He would be next on the docket. Those haven't been touched since they hit the space lanes, still operating on Warp 3 drives.

Err. It is not cannibalism if you're eating other species. But yes it was the Kzinti who ate a captured human cruiser crew. The Terran alliance started executing prisoners in response. I don't think they stopped eating humans until the end of the second war.

I would agree but I think that merchantmen might move out of our purview as we have the civilian industry to move that to someone else's responsibility, instead of Starfleet.

Mega freighter ahoy. Let's show the Aliens the power of capitalism and mass production of consumer goods.
Terran Alliance? Capitalism? You know this is Star Trek, right?

Well the first one you cant go on the ground, and its only really seen in like a few story missions, and the second has a ground option its just like all the dyson sphere stuff is in the background. Honesty not that bad, feels cool flying around in them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also I misremembered there are four apparently.

Jenolan Dyson Sphere

The Jenolan Dyson Sphere is a system located in the Alsuran Sector of the Delta Quadrant.

stowiki.net

Solanae Dyson Sphere

The Solanae Dyson Sphere is a Dyson sphere located in the Delta Quadrant close to the border to the Beta Quadrant. Accessible through an Iconian gateway in the Azure Sector, the Solanae Dyson Sphere is the site of both a space adventure zone, as well as ground and space "battlezones" occupied...

Andromeda Dyson Sphere

The Andromeda Dyson Sphere is a Dyson sphere, previously located in the Andromeda Galaxy and inhabited by the Iconians and their Herald servants.

Herald Sphere

The Herald Sphere is a small Dyson sphere inhabited by the Heralds. It serves as a control center for the Iconian gateway network.

Don't think we've hit techno-magic induced post-scarcity yet, so capitalism it is.
We don't have replicators, but United Earth is not implied to be capitalist as we would understand it. There's merchant ships, and some form of market economy in the colonies, but I don't think it looks like our reality after WW3.

Huh, thank you for telling me.

We *technically* have. It's never clearly established when, but we know it happens sometime before TOS, and ENT depicts a very recovered society from WW3.
Not for a sixty to hundred years. The Federation doesn't have widespread replicator capable of matter transmutation as of yet. They are still prototyping teleportation a prerequisite tech.

I'd like to build some kind of specialty ship next. Something like hospital ship or a terraforming/ engineering ship. explorers are nice but they get stale.

Yeah, sure, but the replicators just make it easier. UE is not capitalist.
Let us agree to disagree.

I actually tracked down an RL paper by an economist about star trek economics and the key thrust of it was that trying to describe the Federation's economy using modern economic systems is a bad idea. The federation is not capitalist nor is it communist, to try and fit it into one of those boxes is foolish.
