On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

- [X] Obviously the same things a Runelord needs anywhere else. Skill, wisdom, etc.
- [X] But her questions reminds you of what Grimnir said to you in parting.
- [X] of living well and dying for something better. That certainly sounds like something a Runelord needs too, especially in the North where the winds oft blow strong and cold.

Ah heck, I'll just slap the Xs on and revise if a better one pops up.

-[X] What Grimnir said. Live well, die only if it would serve your cause better than your life could.
-[X] What Morgrim said. The need for all of dwarf ingenuity to be applied towards defense.
-[X] That allies and strength can be found in the strangest places.
-[X] That all the best skills and wisdom must be used to survive the tide that may come. We only stood fast because basically all our warriors were armed with adequate runework, and our surface defenses had the same.

So you think we should pull back from the current set a bit?

-[] But her questions reminds you of what Grimnir said to you in parting.
-[] of living well and dying for something better. That certainly sounds like something a Runelord needs too, especially in the North where the winds oft blow strong and cold.

I mean I came up with that, so no? Unless you mean something else.

What I meant is that we can probably use this opportunity to talk about... maybe a couple of things depending on how related they are. Accepting odds things would stretch things I think, given how... controversial it's likely to be. No matter how Ancestor approved the Griffins are and the Elves are, there's always going to be arguments that the next odd thing clearly isn't what the Ancestors meant. Lessons on maybe... large scale cooperation and corralling Runesmiths could work. Being more relaxed about the Rule of Pride.

All things I think we could make a good show of putting forth as whats needed to be a Runelord in the North. But, Grimnir's lesson I think is not only useful for a Runelord, it was originally given to one after all, but also likely to be broadly helpful for those outside of that office as well. And it's also... malleable enough that I think conservatives and radicals alike would think on them even if they didn't come from an Ancestor.

Most importantly though is the story they tell.

These were probably some of the last words Grimnir ever spoke within the Karaz Ankor, one of the last lessons he ever gave to one of his charges. At a point when he would have known exactly how hard pressed we were likely to be. He might have well known we were the last Runelord in the North, and he would have known how badly hit more southern Holds were. One last lesson for the nation, the people, he helped build to greatness before giving the ultimate sacrifice. And we can pass that along in our own way.

looks fun and most of my other quests here have dried up. At some point we should do a banner with Griminir's last journey and lesson to us on it with his rune. maybe with the runes of determination and brotherhood on it as well.

I wonder what effect publicising Grimnir's 'last words' will have on the formation of the Slayer Cult.

More generally, now we know there's a battlefield that was covered in shards of void stones. We really should take a detour there on the way home and strip it bare of any that weren't collected. After all, it was war, and people would have been busy, so they could well not all have been collected.

I approve

Meh the bandwagon has already left, but i feel recycling the Ancestors' wisdom without putting any spin on it is cheap.

I think we should focus more on what makes Snorri tick, so here's my token protest vote:

[X] [Brynna]
-[X] Looking to the future: a lot of elders died, and there are a lot of barely Fullbeard refugees that need guidance.
-[X] Being adaptable: the north is wild and unpredictable. Situations will come up where there is no precedent and you have to make your own judgement calls (such as Griffon alliance)
-[X] Willing to collaborate and elevate the works of other guilds with Runeworks. Collaboration and Brotherhood is why we managed to hold against Kholek, despite being less than two centuries old.

As can be seen by the amount of elders (and Runelords) that died, selling their lives to bloody the enemy, when push comes to shove, Grimnir's words about selling your life tends to come naturally to dwarfs. And Morgrim has consolidated Grimnir's work in making defense cool, so I don't think we need to push for a Runelord that's especially defensive minded. I think the collective trauma we just suffered as a species is sufficient to elevate the base dwarf defensive mindedness to acceptable levels.

Plan:"We clearly support beardling"

[X] [Brynna]
[X]There be no shabby work.
For every hold threre mast be special criterias. Insert metal wisdom here, something about t° of melting.
[X]Times are changing.
In those dire times we need thoose runesmiths who are active, who are vigorous, who will find us new directions for improovement.
[X]And we will see throu those times, tested but not repeled.
But only dwarfs that proven themselves, and their ideas can claim position. For their word must be obeyed not for their position, but for agreement and respect from those beneth them.

the formatting for this plan is not correct, it should be: (Also, corrected your typos :p). And i disagree with your first point... thats a bit too obvious. No dwarf would get past the early stages of apprenticeship if they made shabby work. Let alone become a Master Runesmith in consideration for the Runelord title.

I feel like the additions of the Morgrim-bits are an attempt to reach the Perfect instead of the Good, and losing sight of what the actual question was to begin with.

Just to bring it up again
"What do you have to say Honoured Elder? What do you believe makes one most worthy of our rank in the North?" Brynna asks, golden eyes staring at you inquisitively.
She's asking what, in Snorri's opinion, would make one worthy of being a Runelord in the North.

Grimnir's words work, because they are a general life philosophy.

Morgrim's on the other hand don't, because they are not a life lesson from an elder to a bunch of youngsters, but an intellectual lesson from a teacher to his students. He wasn't trying to teach dwarfs how to live their live. He was teaching them how to design defensive works!

For that matter, answering "what is your opinion?" with "Grimnir said - " is also rather weak on its lonesome. We're not answering her question at all. Just regurgitating somebody else's intellectual goods. At best she'd think Snorri is trying to keep his opinion close to his chest. At worst she'll think for Snorri to not even have have spent a minute thinking about what it means to be a Runelord - which, considering that Snorri himself took up that mantle, is an incredibly damning assessment.

I really like @IronFist 's vote for actually offering some concrete points.
