We can establish Sabrina as a powerhouse easily. That's not really the goal. Establishing, every Mitakihara magical girl as a major threat and a cut above most other magical girls is a good deal more desirable in my book. That means establishing our teammates over Sabrina just one-shotting everyone she can.

This fight is going to be much more difficult than one-shotting everyone. They're going to deliberately stay out of our range, and we don't really have mobility tricks that work at fight speeds. Kirika and Mami will get a chance to show off even if we decide to go maximum power from the beginning.

So do you mind if I actually do some overplanning? Actually, what the fuck, omake form seems to be working a lot better than putting my thoughts to bullet points today. Let's see...

You can't sense anything. Peering around in the dark is useless. You close your eyes.

The grief of seven souls and your own burns bright around you. Chouko and her friends are nervous. No, they're afraid. They think of you as an ally, but not one so reliable as to give you control. You brought them relief, and hope, but that hope didn't play out. You should have came to them as an enforcer and not a mediator. But it doesn't matter now.

Cornered prey will go to ground. Yuko is preparing to take Rin's gem again. Then the four of them will flee. Their knowledge of this city is a boon, but their mentality is not. You won't win by being desperately defensive. Oriko told you that they would have been driven out of the city before returning with their allies. Your presence will change that, but the fight will be harder because of their mentality.

Yuko, leave her. Chouko, take us somewhere we can make a stand, you reply. You aren't going to search the city for your enemies, or lead them on a chase. Not when they seem so eager to come to you.

There are three more gems. Kirika is tense. Tightly wound. Not merely anticipating the fight. More than that. Why?

You remind yourself that she's only been in two real fights. Ishinomaki, where she did great but was frustrated by enemy powers. And the fight at the warehouses, where she...

Lost. Not only lost, but failed to protect her Ojou. Completely. And now, Oriko might not be here, but Kirika is on a mission from her all the same.

She's tense because she doesn't want to fail again. You doubt she realizes it herself.

The other in your group is on edge too, but her soul radiates only one thing. Protectiveness. This is someone who has your back completely, no matter what.

Trust her more, your heart screams, even as your mind clamps down.

Water falls from the sky. Darkness surrounds you. You stand atop a steel jungle. Those three opponents could already be working here. The teleporter is always a threat, even as you spare a peek at where she had stood vigil only moments ago. Upwards, up above the storm clouds sounds safe. But no. Gravity control makes that just as risky. And can a light controller bend light for remove viewing? You hope not.

You envision the enemy attack. Many methods you can predict, but countless more you can't.

Attacking from long range at the speed of light. Your shields seem absolute, but they rely on your reaction speed. This is an attack that can't be reacted to. Or can it? Beams might travel at the speed of light, but they're aimed and fired at the speed of thought. Your reflexes might not be good enough to pre-position shields, but you have someone who is. You spin out dozens of thin disks, opaque shields against any ranged attack, and intersperse them with angled slots.

Mami, weave ribbons into and around these shields. Your reflexes are better than mine.

As she does so, you release the grief constructs from your concious control. No need to fight her to move them. Her magical expense is large, but you're draining her gem faster than it can accumulate. You lay out hundreds more grief constructs in a constellation around everyone. Two sets of reflexes are better than one.

Attacking from range with water. Attacking from range with darkness. Attacking from range with metal. These all amount to the same thing. Control of your environment. You spare Kirika a glance. In the worst case, she can spam antimagic continuously while you drain her gem. It'll make any area control powers untenable. But you should save her first use for if you can disable several enemy magical girls. And that means you need to get into close range. Your enemy likely wants to keep the advantage of range. You know Akiko has a measure on yours.

And then there's teleporting, or other similar surprises. Light grenades. Can Sakura teleport objects without taking herself along? If she can, it's an ability she's kept very well guarded. You envision an attack where she teleports cooked light grenades into your midst. Then you realize that with a darkness controller, she could teleport everyone into your midst while all blindfolded with darkness, and have full seconds to take advantage of any light explosion.

You can't afford to play this safe.

Homura, Oriko, I'm putting you two on standby.

Mami, Kirika, if we're attacked, go all out. Kirika, antimagic using the same plan as last time. Catch the teleporter, if you can. And since they won't want to enter my range, we'll have to use whatever speed surprises we have to get into theirs. I'm taking suggestions.

There's one more gem flickering in your range. You wish you had time to say more to her. But you can't take her with you. You made a promise.

This may sound contradictory, Rin, but if it was me? I'd do right by my friends. Even if acting in their best interests isn't what they want me to do. Good luck.

You open your eyes. You haven't found your foes, but you've found yourself. The rooftop cracks as you step from it onto your team's grief platform.

It's a good sign, you decide.

I'm tempted just to vote for Onmur, but can't we make it better?

e: apparently actually doing planning is too hard and assumes too much for this quest, so...

A stray thought, but they're probably expecting Sabrina to go in loud. If you can't get into range, a repeat of that misdirection trick she pulled after that first meeting with Rin and Sakura might yield results. Or go run silent while the others catch their attention.

We could try moving ourselves with Grief. I mean we can move the jet at ludicrous speeds. Don't see why we couldn't do the same with ourselves.
We did actually. We've been using that trick ever since we discovered we can move ourselves through grief control. I'm not really sure where SWB is coming from, our aerial mobility probably rivals that of a harrier jump jet.

A few marbles rise out of your bag, and you let them expand into billowing clouds of Grief. The cloud goes one direction, while you go another - heading into an alley and bounding up to the rooftops, following the pair of magical bonfires moving west at an unhurried, walking pace.

This one? Hard to pull when we're currently under enemy observation.

How do we close on enemies we can't see, hidden by darkness power, who are beyond our grief sensing ranges, who intend to keep out of our grief control/sense range by teleporting? We're good, but we aren't that good.

I mean, I'm bringing up worst case scenarios. We don't have to have an answer, but it doesn't hurt to brainstorm. Attaching grief jetpacks (well, not really, but constructs that we can yank around at ludicrous speeds if necessary) to our team isn't a bad answer.

That wasn't the point I was responding to. This was the point you were making earlier:

Which is patently not true. If it weren't for the range limitation Sabrina can probably go toe to toe modern jet fighters. We can both take advantage of aerodynamics and ignore them our at leisure, and we don't even need to worry about G-forces. Our aerial mobility isn't going to be a problem.

As for pinning down enemies, well, that's what Kirika is for. They may outrange us, but our shields are tough enough that we can tank whatever they throw at us from that range. Worst case scenario we'll just end up in a stalemate, and the moment they enter into our range, Kirika's antimagic can make an opening for us to take them apart.

Range wouldn't be an issue if we had lasers. Or we could start carrying around ball bearings or something else to throw really hard...

... Mami could teach us how to make guns!

Even if they're out of range at the moment, our sensing range is 200m. That's really damn good. It's extremely unlikely they would be able to avoid our senses for any extended period of time. Teleporter or not.

Worst case scenario indeed. This is really pushing hyper competence again. Everyone managing to stay out of Sabrina's range (very unlikely). Every girl having a range attack that exceeds ours (extremely unlikely). Gravity to keep us out of flight (Chouko's done just fine.). Sakura teleporting a goddamn flashbang (Firn has never hinted at all that she can do this).

Really, if things were this bad, the UG might as well have packed their bags and left a long time ago.

Guys, I had a thought. Japan is already making exo-skeletons for heavy lifting and such.
Can we make something like that out of Grief?

...Can we go a full suit of grief Power Armor?

Wait....

Why go simply grief power armor, when we can do better?
What if we made... Grief Mecha?

Walpurgisnacht is fucked.

I was going to bring up the suggestion that Sabrina could simply make a suit of armor large enough to hover over her as opposed to actually wearing it, but giant robots work too.

I'm not trusting our senses until Moe's out of the fight, and I'm not trusting Moe's out of it until Sasami's down for the count.

Simply because Shadow->'Denial of perception' and Light->Illusions aren't that farfetched connections to make as far as magical powers go.

Adding to that, I doubt the UG ever fought Akiko under this weather, so she's likely stronger than they've ever seen her. Even taking into account Sabrina's potential, I won't be surprised if Akiko's range is better than Sabrina's simply due to water being a lo simpler than magical grief.

A worst case scenario would be Akiko literally becoming the rain or something silly like that.

No, but the IG probably did, and they still trounced her handily. If they can do it, we can do it too.

Sabrina's grief senses have never completely failed. Not even against a magical girl that can become invisible. She can also sense magic with her grief sense so even the Shadow user would have a tough time evading Sabrina. Not saying it's impossible but thus far it's unprecedented.

They know enough to tell us that the rain is 'advantageous to Hamasaki'. So yeah, we've already established that atleast for now, Akiko is fighting under a fairly significant buff.

Even taking into account Sabrina's potential, I won't be surprised if Akiko's range is better than Sabrina's simply due to water being a lo simpler than magical grief.

I'm not so sure about that. Sabrina having a 100m radius of absolute grief control matches well to the Soul Gems maximum range for body operation. It be very strange for Akiko to be able to exceed that range.

A worst case scenario would be Akiko literally becoming the rain or something silly like that.

Probably not happening. But that would be fun for awhile... before we just say fuck it and yank her soul gem.
