I feel like asking what they know about Ono and her circumstances while Masami and Hiroko are here. Ono might be amicable to talking to us now, but I can't imagine it would be easy to get her to voice anything that could be perceived as a weakness of hers given her temperament. There's no guarantee the Animators are that close that they know either, but they're probably still closer than us at this point.

[X] If any of them have experience with Tokyo, you'd love to hear it. You've got a meeting with them scheduled on Sunday and you have no idea what you're doing.
[X] There's a reverse-Noriko soul gem collector heading here early next week. We plan to handle it, but if they see them, notify us and do not engage.
- [X] Explain that said collector keeps at least some of their collection in a box on their person and that engaging her recklessly might end up with them in the crossfire even if they are able to "win". This is to be avoided since our first priority in handling Souju is to liberate the hostages.
[X] Ask the Animators how Ono has been doing and if there are any touchy subjects they're aware of that you might need to be careful bringing up next time you speak with her.
[X] Beyond that, just enjoy yourselves and help the two pairs get comfortable with each other.

Mostly fine. Admitting that we have no idea what we're doing might worry some people tho.
Then again, there's something to be said about honesty.

Are we going to bring up Walpurgisnacht? Have we done so already in a previous talk with the Animators?
On mobile, so I can't verify it easily, but I think we already briefed Noriko and Akane about Walpy during their housewarming party, along with the 'while any help is welcomed, living in Mitakihara does not mean you are required to fight the Witch-shaped unnatural disaster' notice.

I vaguely recall that we've told the Animators about it too? It's a too important subject not to tell, and I think they've mentioned that they won't take part in the fight.

I know we told Noriko and Akane, but I don't recall if we told the Animators.

This seems like it's way too much information about the serial kidnappers if we want the last part of the vote to happen.

We have not told the Animators, but doing so now runs into the same problem. There's not much getting comfortable after talking about the city being destroyed by a kaiju.

Then again, time is running out for us to tell them, so it might be better just to live with that.

We're already talking to them about the Soujus which won't really get them comfortable either.

Delaying telling them is a bad idea.

[X] Walpurgisnacht, the Queen of Witches is coming to Mitakihara on April 30. We're hoping to handle it, but... it's a big thing. They might want to evacuate before it comes.

Here's some revisions. First change was Walpurgisnacht.

Second change was removing the details about the Soujus (Unless they ask, they probably don't want the details, and probably don't want to fight them anyways). Saying we can get there really quickly is an alternative that tries to preserve the intention of that - getting them to not engage alone.

Third change was getting the question about Ono to be more open ended rather than specifically asking about the location of conversational landmines.

The reason for the detail was because I feel that telling someone not to fight back even in self-defense when confronted with a killer who is trying to rip your soul out without any other explanation is, I feel, something of an extraordinarily tall order. Assuming their fight-or-flight instincts will lead towards flight is far from a certainty. Shiogama and the Animators may not be hardened mercenaries or hyper-aggressive, but they are still girls who have been fighting Witches for quite some time and aren't exactly strangers to loss by now. If put in a situation where their partners are imminently at risk, I'd believe they'd fight rather than flee.

Telling them to run and just call us without any other explanation comes suspiciously close to implying that we have no faith in their abilities as fighters or their capacity to take care of themselves or perhaps worse, that we see ourselves as the sole official police authority in the area and that all conflicts should be directed to us no matter what.

The way I see it, that's the sort of thing that could lead to deliberately rebelling against our suggestion or at least come off as personally insulting and start up an argument.

Addressing the concerns above and shuffling the Walpy talk to keep the mood upbeat for longer.

We can be there literally as soon as they call us. If they ask for "why don't we want to engage?" or something we can provide the specifics about why our plan is what it is. I added that "we can be there really quickly" part as encouragement to just call us if they encounter the Soujus. I don't think any of these people are going to use lethal force unless it's absolutely necessary.

Perhaps we can add where they keep soul gems for knowledge and trust them to reason out the rest on their own.

I didn't think of this. I was more assuming that they'd be glad to not have to worry about fighting, but I suppose that could be a concern.

Here's a compromise. I don't want to talk about a worst-case scenario, as it'll just bring down the mood for no benefit.

telling someone not to fight back even in self-defense
That's not what we're doing though? The vote you're adding to is telling them not to fight if they have the option, and the explanation for why is right in the description "soul gem collector". You don't fuck with someone who hunts the most dangerous game unless you're very confident that you're more dangerous than their game.

*blinks*

Wait, when did Ugo's account get suspended? Pretty sure it didn't say anything about that when I was reading through the thread earlier.:thonk:

The original base vote from defenestrator was "if they see them, notify us and do not engage", which isn't situation specific and applies as much to if Souju were to jump them in an alley as if they passed her on the streets.

The vote to explain is meant to tell them why we would prefer (rather than making it come off as a command) that they don't engage and outlining the risks of doing so if they ignore that advice. "Soul Gem Collector" is not immediately self-explanatory. It does not automatically lead to the assumption that Souju actively carries some part of her collection on herself, as opposed to having them stored in a safehouse or makeshift private museum somewhere like the Pleiades Saints did in Kazumi Magica, or that trying to blow her up on the spot with "overwhelming force" would inadvertently sacrifice them all.

In fact, we don't even actually know if that IS her entire collection that she carries with her, which is another problem. Kazumi Magica showed she has at least 8 in her box and was able to pull a dozen or so seemingly out of thin air (possibly from her 4D hammerspace by PMAS logic, but then again they are Soul Gems). She could have a bunch more stashed in another box somewhere else, which we would never find or know about without interrogating Souju herself.

Because of these hostages (which Souju may or may not acknowledge as such, but in practice serve as), Souju ends up being a bit of a headache that all of Sabrina's unlimited dakka cannot simply steamroll over. The best thing that can be said, I suppose, is that even if Souju does successfully pull of an attack on anybody, she probably won't kill them outright but just snatch their Soul Gem intact and leave the option open to rescue whoever the unlucky victim was later on.

It really doesn't, because we're not actually anyone's boss here and what we tell them can only go so far.

I understand that that's what you're focused on, but they don't walk around encrusted in gems. If Hiroko could use her illusions to walk up to them and cut their head off there wouldn't be much risk, except that they're badass enough to collect soul gems so trying is more likely to get Hiroko hurt when they hear or smell her or something.

It still stands that the best chance of not getting kidnapped for a morbid collection would be to get the hell out of dodge at first sight

Wait
All magical girls have a soul gem ring on their left middle finger
A good way of pretending to be normal would be to keep it somewhere else. Slower the chance of being clocked

The base vote is a blunt blanket "call us, don't fight" and comes off sounding like a command. There is nothing in that vote that says to phrase it nicely as a request or suggestion or piece of advice, so if that's all the vote is for, that's all we're going to get.

The whole point about explaining why is precisely because we're not their boss and they may very well not carry out that order since it makes it sound like we think we are, which is insulting. Meanwhile explaining takes the edge off and makes it more likely for them to heed the warning.

The risk, as I mentioned in my last post, is that they may have other Gems stashed away elsewhere that we won't know about even if we could somehow just up and assassinate Souju on sight. We don't actually know how many or where all of them are kept. And we don't know if the ones on her are kept in some version of hammerspace that will collapse and disappear, taking all of them with her if she goes.

Have we actually not informed the Animators of Walmart night? I feel like we would told them at least over telepathy or something given how important it is.

We have not, although we've considered telling them about it right after we helped them and everything and and decided that it would sound too much like a recruitment pitch and were worried that they'd feel obligated to help, and we figured we'd have plenty of time later. See:

You wave it off. "Eh, it's nothing much," you say. "But you're welcome." You briefly debate bring up Walpurgisnacht, since it's kind of weighing on your mind, but in the end... long game, right? "Is there anything else?"
