In retrospect, I agree with kinigget, the bit in red is going a bit far at this point. we will have plenty of time (heh) to discuss this with our friends, and should come to a decision with them. I do not think we should necessarily default to imprisonment yet, though I do think some of the points in red are valuable, and important to keep, namely explaining Riona's circumstances.

So, keep it to just explain everything? (And cut to voting).

Actually, wouldn't 'everything' include Riona's Wish and related problems? Why did I even add that? :thonk:

[X] Agree to end the meeting shortly.
-[X] Tell Riona you regret that she wasn't able to find what she was searching for here.

[X] Release the Field.

[X] Before letting her be, call her out and get concessions in exchange for her actions, without pissing her off too badly:
-[X] Priority: Arrange a new meeting before she leaves, with plenty of time to spare.
-[X] Priority: She does not attack nor use magic against anyone in Mitakihara.
-[X] She'll answer all our questions next meeting.

[X] Go. Once you're away:
-[X] Timestop meeting. Include Sayaka.
-[X] Explain everything. Avoid social bombs. Don't take sides, be impartial.

I like this vote. The bit in red is cut out because it makes the meeting redundant. We want to decide this with our friends not go into a meeting with a solution already in mind.

Everyone needs a personal monster

I just happen to be my own

All seriousness though, we get her to be less lethal and she makes a fantastic enforcer/combat asset
We're not as cool as Oriko.

Does anyone have any plan where Sabrina rolls to Intimidate? Persuasion is out and she gonna call any Bluffs

Not actually do anything but just go all in Godfather on... Irkalla?

So I had a thought that maybe the problem was that we framed this conversation as us helping Riona. Maybe Riona just wanted a conversation with us and her at equal grounds, rather than us just helping her? Moral issues aside, I have a suspicion that the conversation would have gone more smoothly if we said "I want your help for turning witches back into magical girls, so I'll give you clear seed (s) if you do."

Edit: to clarify, I wrote the post above because I saw Sabrina keep saying that Riona wanted something when she came to Mitakihara. I think that "something" was a professional relationship, and I think Riona's lashing out because the conversation's getting too private.

We're not as cool as Oriko.
We are the least cool person in this story. We're so dorky and uncool we loop back around into cool. As apposed to our friends who are just cool.

Oriko - Is so cool she was originally supposed to be the villain. Also has a magnificent hat.
Kirika - Is the other dork. This is why she's best buddy.
Homura - Controls time and has guns. Infinite coolness.
Madoka - Basically Jesus. Therefore awesome.
Sayaka - Soon she shall be a one girl army. Also she has blue hair. You know who else has blue hair? Kamina. No more explanation needed.
Mami - Oh hey Mami's awesome. News at 11.
Other people - are pretty cool too.

Here's the present: there's a new meguca, and we're immune to her powers, but she's confusingly not afraid of us.

Here's the future, as Oriko foresaw it: a mysterious entity, with a powerset very similar to Riona's, strikes at our friends, converting them to shades one by one. The mysterious entity tries to avoid confrontation with us directly, presumably because we're immune to her shade power.

Here's my theory: Riona is, in fact, Feathers. Personally.
This encounter will, inevitably, end in a feud, one which will take up a big chunk of the future story.
We can escalate to violence now, if we like, but we can't kill or capture Riona, because one of her dozens of powers makes her invulnerable.
(My best guess is she's got a clone body back in Edinburgh which will activate if this one dies?)

Here's what this theory suggests: we need to squeeze as much information out of Riona as we possibly can before she enters full Feathers mode. We need to learn her powers, her shades, her shades' powers, her goals, her shades' goals, and in particular we need to learn what's going to be necessary to finally defeat her.

Here's what I'd like to do: I'd like to challenge her to a sparring match.
No alpha strikes from secrecy, no treachery, no backstabbing, but a full-on, honest battle, in an open area with no civilians, much like we had with Yuki in Fukushima.
We get her to expose as many of her powers as we can.

Ideally we need to somehow interrogate a shade.

This particular vote is too silly, but here's a thought:
[] We have more to say, but we don't need the privacy shield for it.
- [] Privacy shields: down.
- [] Spotlight: activate.
- [] Theme music: engage.
- [] Pose: Sailor Moon Classic.
[] Riona: your power disturbs me!
- [] What you do to girls, guilty or innocent, is far too harsh!
- [] I challenge you, then: hammer against blade, magic against magic, laser against cloud of spinny things!
- [] Riona Mag Aoidh: would you spar with me?
- [] No soul-stealing, no killing, but bring your whole army against me and Mami. It'll be fun!
- [] I'll offer a Clear Seed if we lose. If we win, I want one of your shades for 24 hours.

I am swayed!

So...yeah, we are immune to soul manips, we win.

Just gotta make mumi also evade soul jacks.

We are on a clear position of power to intimidate.

Really want an intimidate vote, complete with gendo pose and kubrik stare. But can't vote craft to save me life.

I'm 100% sure that Mami and Sayaka will be on board with taking Rionna out. We'd have to actively lie to Sayaka to keep her from going after Rionna with her bare hands. There's no way in the world this is going to be a moral or ethical debate.
Don't take sides, be impartial
This can only serve to make Sayaka and Mami angry at us. Fuck, it'll probably make Homura mad at us. I don't understand why you think it's a good idea. Maybe you should take it out.

She'd punch us in the face and then try to take our gem. We've already seen how she responds to pressure - she escalates.

So the question is: Is it better to attack Rionna now, or to try to get into a timestop and attack her afterward?

The major argument for "later" is so that we can maximize our chances of getting into timestop. Once we get into timestop we have as much time as we want to gather allies, ready ourselves, and line up our opening shots.

I don't find this argument to be particularly compelling. If we let Rionna out of this sphere she will instantly bring her defenses to full power. What else could she possibly do? She just attacked us. And don't give me any shit about it being "just" mind control. She attacked us. Flat-out. Unnatural Mental Influence with Hostile Intent. Fucking done. There's no way she's not going to be expecting a fight.

Furthermore, consider that Homura has set herself up on overwatch, and Mami is 100% ready to go. Rionna may be ready, but she apparently needs to command her spirits, which means that they are in exactly the same posture they were in when we entered the bubble. And when we entered the bubble, her shades were standing down far enough for social-interaction purposes. Consider also that her shades aren't range-limited - once she can give orders to them, she will almost certainly have one attach itself to us where it'll necessarily come into timestop with us. That's something we really want to avoid.

I think that our best chance goes something like this: Alpha-strike her now. Tell Mami to GTFO. There is no way that Rionna will be able to counter our alpha-strike well enough to threaten Mami. If Rionna is that badass then we have no chance of fighting her. Clearly we can reject that hypothesis. Contain Rionna inside the privacy sphere. Exit the privacy sphere ourselves and open the distance. Wait for Homura to either get us into timestop (if she can do that without Rionna's shades being pulled in too) or arrive with anti-magic support. That's more than enough to go into the vote for opening combat.

Maybe you didn't notice, but Rionna is absolutely a morally grey character

Rionna is meant to be morally black.

Could you please clarify this? Because from how you've written her, especially in the latest update, she doesn't feel like a monster to me, at all.

In just a couple minutes of talking we've gotten her to open up about her sister, and even after hitting a very emotional sore point, her strongest desire isn't to hurt any of us, but just to be left alone to return home in peace.

If you do convince me that she is canonically a morally black monster of a person, despite not coming off as one in the text so far (which could still be my fault, I'm not the most emotionally intelligent of people), I'll have to seriously rethink her character.

Maybe start with the part where her Wish was to have the power to torture someone forever, and how she's been using that same power on anyone that annoys her? And when we asked her how she chose who she was going to torture forever, she just said "iunno, some of them are probably innocent" and shrugged? People don't have to do things right in front of your eyes or scream about their evil to be evil.

Eh. I said morally grey because I was hedging my words - I didn't want to come out and say it because I expected people to read between the lines there. That's my particular style of GMing and writing - I leave strong hints and implications in the text for people to examine... and in this case, I'm breaking that particular style. And sure, she's talking about her sister, in the context of someone she Wished to raise from the dead for the crime of killing said sister. By implication, because even Rionna isn't going to say it in as many words, she made that Wish to exact vengeance -torture- on that person. If you consider raising someone from the dead to torture them, continuously, not particularly monstrous, I don't know what to say.

"It's not a criticism. Just an observation. And besides," Yuki says, voice turning amused. She steps past you, smoothly greeting Sakura and Rin. "I happen to be an expert in crisis management."
Can we bring in Tsuruya Yuki for advice?
She may not be as close to our inner circle but she does have a lot more experience interacting with Magical girls than Mami as a mercenary. She would know how to handle her type.

I hope we can help her after defeating her in battle....
