So, basically what we're doing in this Quest, but edgier?
We're helping meguca and then maybe empire building.

Riona quest would be more of a detective meguca quest. Not out to help everyone (because she can't help like Sabrina can), but to make things less worse, by hunting down the worst of the worst.

70% detective game, 20% making sure you have a home to go back to, 10% fighting the evil meguca.

... I'm sorry, I really try, but all I can get out of this is "Edgy Sabrina Quest".
Like, "I don't need peers, they make me vulnerable."
Or better, "For behold, the Lord has come to punish the wicked for their sins; And the earth will reveal her bloodshed and no longer cover her slain!"

Framing for Sayaka depending on how things play out.

"I mean, I guess what I'm saying here is: your powers are amazing, they'll get moreamazing, but they're not what makes youamazing," you say, shrugging. "But I dunno. If you want a concrete example right now, look at Kyouko."

"... Yeah?" Sayaka says, frowning.

"In broad strokes? I already told you about her financial issues, but she's also got Grief Seed supply issues. Hunting's getting pretty scarce in Kasamino," you say. "And I'm pretty sure you've noticed she doesn't want to accept help. She's got... mm, issues that aren't mine to elaborate on."

"And you wanna throw me at the problem?" Sayaka asks, frowning.

"No. I want you to be yourself," you say. "Pushing her too hard is a dead guaranteed way of pushing her away. Just... the lessons are good for you, and I'm hoping that you'll be her friend, too. I'm not... I don't think I'm the right person for the job."

"Just be myself," Sayaka echoes. "I... guess I can do that."
Nutshell version:

You know how I pointed you in Kyoko's direction? This is a higher stakes version of that, and I'm the one most capable of reaching her.

I think picking up companions would be part of the game? Or students? I even said that two posts back. :p

Again, I see it as mostly a detective sort of game. Most of the time is spent looking for interesting rumours, following trails, finding new people in new situations, learning about them, getting close to key characters...

You'd find some Obviously Evil cases sometimes, which would come down to a fight, but that shouldn't be a common case.

The most difficult thing about making such a game, I feel, would be creating many, many new situations and characters, because the game would be about getting to know new people in new situations. Most people aren't Obviously Evil, so what do you do when you find confused people in fucked up situations where everybody's trying to get by, and you can't really help anybody? When there isn't a convenient target to cut down and call it a day, everybody cheering for you have vanquished the evulz?

Sometimes? You'd get to just go home, knowing you couldn't do anything to help. And that'd suck.

Sabrina is special. She can go there and solve one of the fundamental underlying issues of meguca. She can set better standards.

Riona (or any other meguca who's out to help), if there's no obvious evil meguca abusing others? I think making good choices would be far more difficult. This is what I find attractive about the idea. Sleuthing, making decisions.

In the end, she's a pawn of KB, just like everybody else.

You'd aquire a plucky support team as your adventures lead you around the globe. The hacker, the pilot, the business mougle, the ex-mercenaries, the cyber-dog.

You help everyone, by putting bad things away. Your the sheriff.

... Hmm. I do understand what you're trying to tell me.
the only question that remains is this: when did I start associating "morally gray" with "edgy"?

And I stand by quoting the Book of Isaiah when dispensing judgement.
In a disgustingly Irish accent, of course. :V

Er, except, we're not evil, and we almost did. If this is the case, it raises questions of how evil the others were.
Well, that's why I say, maybe Riona's baiting us. Sabrina's power is literally impossible sans Madokami intervention, so by all means, this should be a clear and cut case.

Grief bender? 99.9999999999999...% evil (by non-god-intervention-standards; remember our power is unprecedented).

(Or well, maybe there are some griefbenders who use their powers for non-evil, but I don't imagine there's a lot of them.)

So... basically, Riona's super shady claims, her non-chalance about the Souls she's taken, her evulz grinning... It could be just:

Not saying it is, but it could be.

I kind of would want to be the detective. The fighting wouldn't be the main part of the thing I'm trying to describe. :p

You'd need to build a network of informants, but sleuthing, detective work. That's what I'd like.

Hell,
Sometimes? You'd get to just go home, knowing you couldn't do anything to help. And that'd suck.

Imagine that.

"Senpai? We travelled across Europe and to the other side of Asia, and it was all a lie? There wasn't a hope controller, not even a bad girl pretending to be one?"

"..."

"We didn't do anything. Everyone's still fighting over Seeds."

"..."

"... Why did we come all the way here?"

"..."

"..."

"Don't fall asleep on the plane. You'll mess up your sleep cycle."

"... At least I made a friend."

"Good."

Right now? She would be at stage 3: Bait the 99.9% Evil Griefbender (going by empirical evidence) into showing her true intentions. First step: talk shit, make herself sound dangerous, give reasons for Evil Griefbender to fear and self-justify attacking Riona.

If we attack her due to that, after talking for just five or so minutes? That might be just what Riona expects. Her way to prove we're one of the evil ones, the ones she needs to put down.
She's a veteran Meguca that appears to be inspired by Mad Eye Moody among others. As well as having a lot in common with a 'path not taken' Sabrina, and a powerset that makes her especially suited to be an equal match as an antagonist.

Even if it turns out she must turn antagonist on us due to the natural animosity Mary Sues have* for their own kind or was hiding that she was really evil from the start as others believe; I truly expect her to have contingency plans in place just in case this is a trap.

Especially if she's Evil, there are nasty surprises she could spring on us just by noticing what we value most and giving conditional orders to her shades based on what her condition is when the privacy shield is dispelled.

Heck, she may very well have her own specialty grief seeds that she can cram completely full with no chance of the witch rehatching, because the witch has been removed!

*I imagine she probably has just as many issues with our brand of justice as we do with hers.

"It's over, there will be no more enslaving souls under the new order!"

"Tell me somethin, do you burn, Sabrina? Do you burn? You will!"

Another reference?

Yeah, It's easier to find in various IMEs and keyboards for Android than Matou. I had to type 'Makiri' if I wanted the proper Kanji.
I expanded the username I use here to other sites and accounts in games, and I had to use different means of inputing text for many of them. To type out my alias in Kanji I just need to type "ma dou su ko hana" (leaving out the 'te' because that inserts a katakana 'te' to the kanji and that makes it too long for some fields and doesn't change the pronounciation either way.)

"Madoka! Why did you say that name?"

"It's her frien... Actually Sabrina, why did you say that name and not Mami's"

"...Didn't know it was her Sister's name too"

"Well that didn't work out as well as I'd hoped, but if Man can't kill a God, you have to hope a devil can. Rise Jyuubey!"

So, an interesting insight from the discord: It looks like Rionna may be how we met Oriko in a possible future where we killed her.

Also some speculation on her trying to bring her sister back from the dead.

Sabrina
```"Last chance. Make sense, or we're done here." You half turn, one hand still holding on to the reel of thread connecting her to the time stop. A long moment of silence, as Oriko's jaw works. You wait, seeing if she'll actually be useful now. She swallows, hard, and finally opens her mouth. "I wish you the best of luck, Sabrina. Bury me with Kirika, if you can arrange it," she says, voice shaky. "We will meet again."```
Sabrina: *looks at Rionna.*
To continue where we left off. I don't think it's possible for Oriko's shade to be Feathers: Because we've seen Feathers rearrange stuff in the present, while that shade must be born in the future.
On the main point, another possibility for Rionna's wish occurs to me: To save her sister's soul from being a witch (and ended up lacking the raw oopmh to make it go all the way through and got a shade instead.)
I should clarify my theorizing: I'm saying that what we attribute as Feathers (barrier fuckery, invisitext, etc) and what Oriko attributes to Feathers (vision blockage, people dying mysteriously) are different.
In the latter case, we're already seeing a strong possibility that Rionna is the reason for the deaths. Oriko's shade could hypothetically block her past self's visions.
So uh. There's a very strong reason why I'm worried about this possibility.
Riona's witch name is Irkalla, a version of the underworld ruled by the goddess Ereshkigal.
Ereshkigal is characterized as having wings with black feathers in some of her depictions, most notably in The Descent of Inanna, one of her most characteristic myths, where the named character goes into the Underworld to bargain with her for the release of a soul.
I know we meme about this sort of shit all the time but Riona might actually be (part of the phenomena we are mistakenly personifying as having a single cause known as) Feathers.
If Riona turns out to be actual necromancer magical girl, I call hax.
And I'd ask her to accompany us on a trip to Sendai to try and talk to one Kato Setsuko. Also, maybe the Shiogama girls would like to talk with their lost teammate. Also, if that's the case, Riona must be horribly annoyed with anybody who starts asking her to bring up dead people. :V
I'm... a little doubtful she could get Oriko's Soul a week after Oriko's death. At the very least, that would mean Riona's potential must be fucking high. I'd understand grabbing someone's Soul while they're alive, or while they're dying, but IIRC, going by KB, Souls disperse after death.
To bring a Soul back after that, and not as a one off effect from the wish, but at will, would be... quite some hax.
Hell... if that's true and Riona works with us, that might open a de-Witching branch path in which we smash Grief Seeds and Riona pulls the Souls back.
... Tibdit I just remembered, Niko in PMKM is able to... operate or something on a Seed, and pull out its 'core'/heart, which she dubs 'Cor Maleficus'. I wonder if we should nudge her towards that.
To note, Riona's previous witch name was Nephthys, until Firn realized he had already used it, so I doubt the specifics of 'Irkalla' are so closely related to Feathers, unless she happens to share such attributes with Nephthys.
(More OOC, if Firn hadn't already made an important note about an Irkalla-Feathers relationship, I doubt it ties strongly to his plans. :p )
An afterlife exists in PMMM-verse.
And uh, Nephthys and Ereshkigal are basically Egyptian and Sumerian equivalents of the same goddess. Inanna is just Ishtar.
This info is incorrect. The Cor Maleficus was an idea that was proposed by Umika, and rather than it being directly pulled from the Seed, it is the actual heart of a Witch that seems to have been restrained with magic. The purpose of the Cor Maleficus was to use the magic of Witches to keep the clones going rather than the Pleiades needing to constantly feed the clones magic to keep them alive. As for how the Pleiades managed to use the Cor Maleficus for thirteen different clones other than farming for thirteen different Witches, I have no idea.
So what you're saying is that Rionna is also a clone of Niko? :V
'So Niko, I've met this girl called Riona-'
'Oh, no, no no no...'
'Niko? Hello? Did you hang up on me?'
'Sabrina?'
'Kazumi?'
'You have fifteen seconds to explain why my Niko is pretending to get drunk while chugging down some horribly smelling cider and muttering about past mistakes.'
'... Mistakes of a mispent youth?'
'... You don't know, do you?'
'I offer all my moral support.'
'Wait, Niko got up and is packing her things. I think- yes, she says we need to come over to your place real quick, something about apples?'
'... Then I also offer hugs as soon as you get here.'
'You're kind of useless today, aren't you? Don't tell Mami, I want this to be a surprise, ciao!'
'...'
