I like the story very much, and it gave me an idea.

How about asking Homura to find out whether she can protectively enchant her bullets?

I'm quite serious.

It would serve as a good first step towards my new dream of making a magical railgun that runs on POWER OF LOVE AND BULLSHIT. :V

Edit: after our talk with her, I guess.

Also a long, thin, completely impractical cross-shaped spear: just a pointy length of steel with two pointy protrusions near the tip. Not bladed protrusions, and not pointing forward either, just two extra spikes facing perpendicularly to the shaft and tip.
You mean a cross-tree? Cross-trees on spears do serve a practical purpose. They keep the target from pulling the spear through itself in a maddened frenzy to try to get to the person at the other end, which is something wild boars have been known to do.

Maybe I'm ignorant of weapon stuff (I am :p ), or I'm exaggerating; the 'totally impractical' thing was that the cross guard was pointed on both sides same as the tip of the spear; as if they were meant to impale, as if the weilder was expected to swing the spear sideways and stab someone like that.

I figured it would've been much more practical if either the 'spikes' were poiting towards the front, where the enemy is supposed to be, or if they were bladed instead.

Of course a meguca could make it work, but... see, maybe I should put more thought into this, but I didn't want to because I figured all these throwaway OCs would be gone from the story by now. :V

I think that's standard configuration for a Japanese yari spear? I might be misremembering the name. (I can't look it up at the moment, because one of my coworkers tripped the circuit breaker trying to run a space heater and now the computer thinks it's 2012, so Google refuses to communicate with us until someone with the Admin password can fix the clock. This is at least the third time this has happened, and they still haven't learned not to do this.)

What, like a trident? Actually probably would make it a less effective weapon against anything that's not a fish. Better to only have a single point of impact to concentrate the force of the thrust rather than distributing it, especially if you're trying to get through chainmail.

(Not that meguca weapons need to be practical under the normal laws of physics.)

Hm, yaris were the sort of spears I ended up googling. So... a yari, but the crossguard is meant to impale sideways (by swinging the long ass polearm), requiring way too much strenght and precision from the weilder.

The images of yaris I've found, if they include crossguards, have the guard be bladed and point slightly forward, I think making it easier to hurt someone if you miss the stab.

IIRC, the purpose of that kind of protrusion, on polearms at least, is less for outright stabbing, and more often for hooking, catching, and/or pinning the enemy. Take a look at a halberd or Lucerne hammer for instance: You have the very long central pointy bit, for stabbing and then the side protrusions for other operations. This kind of yari looks like a more generalized version of that.

The bottom line is this: you cannot tell us whether it's practical or not to wield a given weapon, Onmur.

I'm playing freaking Fire Emblem Heroes, for Godoka's sake. Compared to what the seasonal versions of the heroes end up using as their weapons, a cross-shaped lance is downright tame. :p

I know Ornstein in Dark Souls uses the cross-guards on his spear as an extra set of grips to brace one of his strong attacks, and the player can do it in Dark Souls 3 once they find his spear.

Shows what I know about spears. :V

I guess a 'pointy stick' is about as non-impractical as it gets.

Maybe I just can't bring myself to actually think up an actually impractical weapon. I wanted to, but my brain is just 'why would you do that, sthap'. :thonk:

It must happen IC. Magical Anti-Witch rifles FTW.
I guess we all would like Homu to have a monster of a magical enhanced rifle capable of punching holes in Walpurgisnacht.

And we all would not like if that weapon was pointed at someone we liked, like say, poor Oriko.

Yes, that one's got the guard at arm's reach, around the middle of the shaft. It can also shoot lightning. :p

@GordoffTheSnord Your input is required, you were the one who learned to use the spears, do you remember any word-of-why-the-crossguard and whether they would've been sharpened in non-stage-combat? (**sneakily tries to pull you into this Quest with relevant material**)

I think we've already proven my ignorance regarding polearms, there's no need to shame me any further. :V

*Retcons spear into having literally a bladed heart for a head but not really because I can't bring myself to do that*

No really, if you want impractical, try a giant carrot. Try a spoon with cake in it. Try a fucking decorative Christmas tree.
All technically lances under feh classification.

Ah, but then I can't peoplenap my friends into contributing using topical material! No! My evil plans! They're collapsing before me!

Ahh.

Okay, we have that pretty blue dress we purchased the other day, and I'm sure Mami has something.

... I cannot believe I'm typing this right now, but it might be actually prudent to ask Mami whether she has a nice dress for a date with Sabrina.

Because, you know, an orphan Meguca who goes from school to home with an occasional mandatory fight in-between.
Or maybe it's better to assume she has it and let her secretly arrange for something without us knowing if she doesn't have one?
Gah.
Asunaro was easier.
