Is she still in Edinburgh? If we're expecting her to arrive soon, then doesn't that imply that she's already en route?
If she's actively en route then I'd estimate it's between 10-11 PM and 7-8 AM for her right now.

Though there's nothing that says she couldn't take a plane like Nadia does and arrive on fairly short notice after verifying the legends.

... Ninjaed on the second point

EDIT: Actually, I think it's worth pointing out that if she takes a plane, she'd likely arrive on the same day she left.

A question I don't recall being answered...

Why is this Riona coming to Japan anyway? Is she here to see someone in person, accomplish some task, or acquire some item? Did someone reach out and convince her to come, or is she traveling on her own initiative?

We don't actually know, but we strongly suspect that she heard about Sabrina and is coming to investigate.

As I recall, it was Oriko who warned Sabrina that Riona was coming in the first place based on her future visions.

At the time, mainly due to reasons of narrative conservation in levels of detail the QM had to write, it was left at that. Maybe it's time to question Oriko again and ask if she can provide any further details. If Riona is coming to see Sabrina, then it might be best not to alarm her by contacting her first. Rather, let her approach in her own way that makes her most comfortable. On the other hand, if she's here to see someone else or do something else, then it might be better to arrange an in-person meeting around that.

It seems to me that having a first contact via telepathy is undesirable if there's another way to achieve it. Doing it that way disallows using contextual social cues of body language and facial expression and increases the chance for misunderstandings.

BTW, there's a chance Kirika might be awake; IIRC, yesterday morning she was shitposting at 2chan when we called in the middle of the night to get her and Oriko to help us with the Asunaro issue.

Also, maybe Oriko is awake and watching those damned birbs. :V

You walk along the sidewalk, Mami's hand warm in your hand as you half listen to your friends' idle chatter. The other half of your mind is occupied contemplating possible attack vectors involving chibi clones, hugs, and four dimensional pathways...

Sounds fade from your mind as your thoughts turn inward, more serious. Are you, have you always been in danger of three-plus dimensional attacks? Are Mami, Homura, your meguca friends vulnerable to these? You barely feel it as you bite your lip, thinking about how you could do something about it, how you could protect your friends...

... Something tugs at you... faintly...

You think of losing Mami, feel a cold icepick stabbing through your head.

Riona... You consider the unkown woman, your sight dimming, colours fading out to...

Blue?

Could Riona be the one fated to kill Sayaka in a different timeline, today, tomorrow?

You feel yourself stop. Forcefully.

Should you contact her? Wait for her? Prepare an ambush? Defenses? Yes to the last one, at least-

Snap!

You blink back into focus, Homura's slender hand in front of your eyes.

"Zeppelins," you blurt.

Violet eyes blink back at you, before turning to stare at the blonde girl on your side, Mami holding -latching onto, you realize- your arm, hard enough to make your hand feel numb.

But her eyes. Trembling, shining, scared.

"Chibis!" you yell, turning to draw Mami into an embrace.

You feel her shiver- and stop.

"What?" asks Mami, confusion overriding the cold, deep seated fear and panic.

"I thought..." you suddenly feel something snap back in place, somewhere... out of your reach? "I thought we could use more Chibis?"

"I... guess?" Mami agrees dubiously, sharing a look with Homura.

You follow her eyes and- "We could drop them from zeppelins and have them randomly hug-" you slap your own head a couple of times, shaking off a few stray random thoughts, "I mean having a Chibi around could serve as a defense in case of de-Gemming?"

You look in turn at Mami, Homura, Sayaka, Madoka, and Hitomi, begging them to understand the importance of your idea -and ignore any weirdness you might have acted or said in the past few minutes- with naught but your eyes and smile.

Mami cuddles into your side, mumbling something too soft to hear, but your understand anyway. "I'm here. Not leaving," you whisper to her, brushing a hand through her hair.

"Right," Sayaka rolls her eyes. "Our weirdo. Come on, it's getting late for school," she tugs ar Hitomi and Madoka and she walks on.

Madoka startles, tugging at Homura in turn as she sends Mami and you a look. "Y-yeah!" she hurries to keep pace with the bleunette.

'Zeppelins?' mouths Homura as she follows the pinkette.

Then you stand alone, alone with Mami.

The last of the late students rushed past a minute ago. If Mami doesn't hurry up right now, she will be late.

You hug her close, letting the seconds, then minutes pass by.

"Are you OK?" asks Mami, separating enough she can look you in the eyes.

"Yeah," you answer surely. Mami frowns ever so slightly. "I mean..." you look for the right words to explain what you... felt, "have you ever had a feeling as if... millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced... and then were suddenly un-silenced...?"

Your best friend stares at you, lips slightly parted, at a loss for words.

"Am I making sense?" you ask.

"No," Mami shakes her head.

"Ah, well, I'm OK," you hug Mami close once more, "and I want to do Chibi Science later?" you add, kissing her forehead.

The blonde blushes and sighs, nodding against your shoulder.

A moment later, you finally separate, and Mami turns to finish walking -quickly, late- to school.

You watch her back until she reaches the doors, and wave as she looks back.

Then she enters the building, disappearing from your mundane senses, and you turn to nod to the Truancy Officer-

He coughs into his hand, looking straight at you before his eyes dart to your side, then back, and back and forth a few times.

You blink, your hand unconsciously groping at your side, grabbing-

Grief sphere.

Enchanted grief sphere, you amend as you look at the black ball in your hand.

Previously floating enchanted grief sphere, you amend again as you remember what you were doing before losing track of your thoughts.

"Oops!"

With a thought, the sphere bends into four dimensional space, out of sight.

You nod at the Truancy Officer.

He nods back.

You walk away, musing whether having a Chibi Brina maid along would soften the impact when you go tell Oriko about all the new security measures...

Re: Riona: Was she headed directly to Mitakihara? Because if she'd had other places to be, given that she was going to be traveling here anyway, she could be in any timezone along the path to Mitakihara, taking care of other business on the way. No less if we were the business that got appended to some other pre-planned trip or trip that she'd been considering but not yet decided on.

for the moment.

Not only is it too early to call Kirika, but she won't have found Hisaomi's diary because we haven't told her about it yet.

[x] Telepathy to Hitomi. We had something that we wanted to talk to her mom about. What's a good time and method to get in touch?
-[x] If "now" is good, contact Mrs. Shizuki. Arrange to meet. Upon meeting, discuss:
--[x] Potential ways to use magic to provide a source of income.
--[x] Whether she knows a trustworthy psychiatrist who could help some of the more troubled magical girls that we've met.
[X] Enchant a supply of grief for future use as needed.
[x] Test putting mundane objects into 4D space and back again. Observe effects.
-[x] If safe, use 4D space to store items that we keep secret and store in our grief cloud currently.

I'm reluctant to try dewitching before we've recruited the meguca that we think will be most helpful for it.

The random stone is now in 4d-Space. No need to vote for that project. We will only evaluate the safety of storage with a few more experiments.
Yes, we need to start recruitment talks early in the day. Good idea.

If Kyuubey comes into this, we must do the conversation asking him for Grief Seeds after they have finished with them. We need either data, or parts to study. This question is useful, will give us a shot at one of those.

The De-Witching research still has a few aspects that Sabrina can advance, IMHO. Pleiades - tachi almost have the requirements, we might be the missing link. The transition into Soul Gem mode may, or may not be a thing we can do alone, but we have no data yet. Further, that may not be a Grief process, but a Magic process. Thus, I want us to train our magic/mundane enchanting more. Magic/Grief enchanting seems more structural and combat focused. We have been hinted that we have (at least) a control magic. It should make lasting effects easy, by forcing mundane changes that remain once the magic is gone. Testing is overdue!

########

Random thought - the alternate mundane set of clothing for Magical girls goes somewhere... might be another slice of this 4D-Space? Can we turn this into a consumerism win? What Magical Girl wouldn't want to pre-load her wardrobe into her soul, for on-demand fashion upgrades? Also, no more being caught out in PJs again?

Holy shit, my vote is actually competing with Kaizuki's. Granted, it's a modified version of the catgirl's vote, but still. And in PMAS. Holy shit.

I won't be updating today, most likely. Aiming for tomorrow!

Also...

@Filraen
Yes, school's started.

I clearly can't remember what she is able to do, so I figured I'd poke you and have a semi-permanent record for when the next time I forget.

1) Can Sayaka use two powers at once, or do they have to be cycled through

2) Can clones use another power?

3) Does she just grab one of her gems to activate it?
1) Yes
2) Not shown on screen, but yes. However, her clones don't get the power gems.
3) Grab and focus for a small but non-negligible time

Also, I'll quote this into the thread for the record.

EDIT: Whoops, just noticed this.
@Firnagzen I have a problem with the update. One of my intentions in the vote to talk with Hijiri was not just to update her on what happened to Anri, but also to ensure she knew we had talked with Anri about what went down --- since we did, if by proxy. Unfortunately, with all the edits to the vote and all the times it was posted and reposted as it kept being delayed, that got lost.

Is it possible to include that bit, or is it too late?
Hmm. I'm willing to edit for that, yeah. I'll make a note, though the overall outcome of Hijiri's tone won't change much.

"So I found that I seem to have an effective 4-space available to me that I can actually access," you say as you walk. "And it's how you hide your teacups, right, Mami?"
Now further test ideas for later:
  • is it actually a 4-space with extra freedoms of rotation, or is it just a separate pocket of 3-space?
  • if extra freedoms of rotation exist, what happens if you set something spinning in a way only possible in 4-space and then yoink it back to normal reality?
  • does the grief range limitation still apply in 4space?
  • can we move living things into it?
  • if so, can we make a habitable environment?
  • how does it interact with kinetic energy and momentum
  • for that matter, could we use Grief to outright open up portals
  • would it be possible to stick our real body in there and just use a remote grief-puppet

The hidden secret to PMAS voting: Often, victory comes to those who simply show up. Especially during planning sessions and more freeform moments.
I prefer to see it as collaboration, rather than a competition (though sometime two different points of view do compete), with the collective winning or losing based on the results of the vote.

But I also have not even voted, and been actually suspended while most of the vote crafting took place and yet I see vote lines I wrote down in literally all the votes, so maybe I'm biased. :V

What this show is that in order to win in voting you have to be the first to throw votes, or at least proto votes.

Voting. Voting never changes.

:V

if extra freedoms of rotation exist, what happens if you set something spinning on a 4-space specific axis and then yoink it back to normal reality?
Normal 3d rotation is implicitly rotating on the ana-kata axis as well, what you'd actually want is something that rotates on two different 3d axis simultaneously.

Edit: I found a visualization

Note that this is a projection, if we actually tried this we'd only see the central slice which remains stationary the whole time.

I just had a thought:
Since OP names the chapters after the chapters in the Half-life series of games, should we try to anticipate what might happen in this chapter based on the title?

For reference, "Point Insertion" is the first chapter of Half-life 2, when Gordon Freeman is dropped into City 17 by the G-Man as the "right man in the wrong place." He is introduced to Barney Calhoun, is gated by the trash can CP, gets chased by Civil Protection for "miscount," and meets Alyx Vance.

Is there anything else significant that happens?

EDIT: Also,

A thought.

The timestop conversation with Homura lasted... and I'm checking right now... in between April 11 and April 25, OOC.

Two weeks. I'm baffled.

That conversation left me with the impression that we had been talking with Homura for around double as long, a month or so.

It was draining; it pulled most of our focus towards Homura, her character, her past, motivations, goals, issues, etc.. It was a rather intense conversation, so much of Sabrina's thought process revolved around her time traveller friend.

I still have some left over thoughts that pop up in my head about Homura and our conversation with her some times. Like the quest was coloured purple and the colour hasn't faded completely in my mind yet.

I wonder how Homura would feel knowing how much thought Sabrina devotes towards her well being.

Something to maybe consider: Before making the Privacy Device, observe how much magic is still in our enchanted grief blob, to compare with when we made it.

Then use the grief blob to make the Privacy Device, and once we unmake it, try and see if we can have the un-witched Grief still be enchanted, or whether it forcibly returns to being normal Grief (maybe depending on how much magic was poured into it?).

Also I think there was something I wanted to say to Oriko, but I don't remember right now. :V I might comment, though it might be too late at this point. Maybe next update if we're still at Oriko's.
