She did it right before the death-march into the toucan witch's barrier started. Did it with a pistol in the same hand too, for bonus style points.

Homura goes home, sits in front of a mirror, and flips her hair. As the strands flow through her fingers like black water, her eyes widen. her hand slows and still in place. Her hair spills down her back and rests like a frozen waterfall.

"...She's right. This is amazingly fabulous."

Flip. Flip. Flip. Flip.

I'm finally cool, like Madoka said...

Entanglement pt. 19
"Oh, we had a nice talk," you say airily. "She doesn't know how she does the hair-flip thing, though."

"Hair-flip thing?" Mami asks, putting her pencil down and looking at you quizzically.

"Yes, you know-" you mime the motion again, reflecting as you do so that this is the second time you've done it this night alone. How do people not recognize the glory that is Homura's hair flip?

"Oh," Mami looks puzzled. "Is this like the teacup thing again? I'm sure she just uses magic to do it."

"That's the thing!" you exclaim with more than a tinge of frustration and waving wildly with your hands to emphasize. "She doesn't! Or she claims she doesn't."

Mami purses her lips, bringing a hand to her own golden curls of hair. "I find that difficult to believe. I used to do my hair without magic... but the alternative is simply so much better."

"Yes, but-" you make the flipping motion again, pacing in circles "-hair! How does she do it? And she claims she doesn't know how she's doing it?" Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Mami and Kyuubey exchanging looks.

"Ah..." Mami trails off, before trying, placatingly, "Maybe she's just keeping her secrets? I... could teach you the teacup trick?"

"Eh, whatever," you mutter grumpily, plumping yourself down on the sofa next to Kyuubey. "No, it's alright, Mami, we all need our secrets, after all. You know what, I should figure out my own thing. You have the teacup, Homura has the hair flip thing... Hm. What could I do..."

You mull it over for a moment, as Mami returns to her homework, puzzled frown still on her face.

"Oh, hey, Kyuubey," you comment. "Think you can do anything with these?" You pull one of the spheres of Grief out of your pocket and hold it up for the alien to inspect. You don't like it, but it seems likely that this is your best shot for getting rid of these.

Kyuubey hops to its feet, and you obligingly bring the marble to its eye level for examination. You resist the urge to smash the alien into a pulp via an exertion of a heroic level of will power.

"Intruiging," the Incubator observes, as Mami looks up with interest. "Place it in the slot on my back," it instructs, turning to present its back to you. A section of its back enclosed by a pink, ovoid marking fades to abyssal black.

You squint, and lean in close to stare into the hole. "Huh. What happens if I stuck something else in there?"

"That would be unpleasant, rather like inserting a stick into someone's mouth," Kyuubey observes blandly. Mami claps her hand over her mouth, muffling giggles. "Please place the Grief inside the hole."

"Alright, alright," you say, popping the marble in. "There."

The opening closes again, and the marking glimmers for a moment. The Incubator wiggles in place, chasing its tail around in a circle for a moment, before sitting up and looking at you again. "Most intruiguing. This can be processed, however, the density is considerably lower than a Grief Seed."

"Is that bad, Kyuubey?" Mami asks anxiously.

"No, by all means, continue," Kyuubey says, before ducking its head and chasing its tail around again.

You stare at the spinning Incubator for a moment. That's as good as you're going to get from it for now, you guess. You briefly consider questioning it, but ultimately decide to wait for now. Instead, you go for a shower, and then proceed to help Mami a little with the trickier questions in her homework.

Eventually, Mami finishes her homework and heads to her room, bidding you good night.

...

A new day, a new dawn. No nocturnal disturbances that you know of. You can here Mami moving around the apartment again.

[] Write-in

=====

Sabrina: Ungodly powerful meguca, good friend, comforter of little girls. Tends to go off on random tangents and completely spazz out about seemingly innocuous things.

Mmmhm.

The write in should include up to your first activity of the day. You can go and experiment with your powers, or go and watch Madoka, or visit the hospital, or Nagisa, or contact Homura, or... whatever.

If relevant, today is Wednesday.

We told Homura we'd try to keep tabs on Oriko as much as we could right?

Also the grief marbles are lower density hmm, but we could provide them on a much faster basis than grief seeds. I mean think about it, grief seeds are limited by the amount of witches in the area to kill and harvest, and more fundamentally by falling magical girls and the amount of deaths the human race can support unnoticed. Our grief marble production isn't limited by that, grief accumulates based on magic use. We could up our production of grief for the incubators simply by spending more magic doing things that normally magical girls wouldn't waste on. Teleportation courier business, healing mundanes for cash, just shooting magic into the ground if we need to.

Also curious why he said that it being lower density than a grief seed is not bad. I don't think he'd lie on that because there's little point to lying about it.

We should also test if we use a grief seed to cleanse a gem can we cleanse the grief seed. That would be important to spreading our effects over more than a city in area.

.

Because he's still getting something out of it. It may not be as much as a Grief Seed, but it's still a net profit so all's good.

That said, he's probably already starting to plan how to make this more efficient without necessarily considering Sabrina's comfort.

It doesn't affect his quota for the moment. Sorely, sorely tempted to go look for Oriko again and literally just straight-up ask her what she wants.

And it's not bad because he's still planning to kill everyone. A little extra grief energy from us in the meantime won't hurt, even if it's less efficient than if we'd witched out and taken everyone else with us instead. Incubator truths again, plus he's probably already set a plan into motion.

[x]Talk to Mami.
-[x] Morning! Stuff in general. Will Madoka and Sayaka be over later?
-[x]Are there some powers universal to magical girls? If so, which ones are really only limited by grief expenditure? Witch detection? If we could make a loop of power usage, pull grief out, more power usage...
-[x]Kyubey, we'd like a word later.
[x]Look up Yuma and Oriko.
[x]Probably too soon to check up on Nagisa...Go experiment first. Chat with Homura about the likelihood of another Kirika incident in the morning/if Kirika's there. Let her in on our plan to....
[x]Go and talk to Oriko again. This time, hopefully, we'll get more out of it. Try telepathy first. Start with the bus, move on to the school, and look for her house as a last resort.

As someone who's reliant on second-hand accounts for the events in the various side stories, is there any deadline on that Yuma business people were talking about the other day? And is there anything to be gained from sticking our noses into that Kazumi trainwreck(assuming it's actually going on)?

Yuma dies within the two weeks before Walpurgis shows up. As for Kazumi... well, much as I hate to admit it, at least a few of the girls do seem to know their way around MG physiology. It's an option.

The deadline is "soon", and "no, Kazumi is terrible and the characters are terrible people who are currently well on schedule to getting themselves messily killed".

Plus, it's a mess and they've magically sealed themselves off from everyone at this point.

...added in a question to Mami since it may be relevant very soon if we do find Yuma.

We probably want to ask Mami about magical healing as soon as we have a valid excuse again, as if it's possible but extremely inefficient...

It's in our best interest to have Oriko ask Kirika what her wish was- since she didn't know she was slowly lobotomizing Kirika in OM by asking her to go on the killing spree.

A relatively sane, less bloodthirsty Kirika and a distracted Oriko work out in our favor- better she finds out now rather than when Kirika's witching out since the latter means she goes insane and tries to kill off the school.
