I'm just going to reiterate my damn vote, lol.

[X] Offer your condolences. Tsuchiya Ritsuko is almost certainly dead, or she would be famous by now for living so long.
-[X] As far as we know, Hitomi is not a potential. We've involved her at all to prevent exactly Mrs. Shizuki just described.
[X] Mami has homework, ask if Mrs. Shizuki is opposed to the content of the conversation so far being "public" so Mami has a response to "what was that about?" You'd like to give Mrs. Shizuki the broad strokes of the current situation, go over w. Mami what you're expecting to talk about -- none of it is anything she's unaware of. If you tackle these separately now, you can spend more time together later, yeah?
[X] Explain briefly: the masquerade, soul gems (lichbomb + need for grief seeds), Walpurgisnacht, your powers, the expected influx of meguca.
-[X] Disaster insurance might not be a bad idea.

Word Count: 148

Wait, why are we even spending effort on it? Brinapilot has all of our discussion here to draw on. She can handle it.

[x] Thank Haruka for breaking the ice.
[x] Give Mami an opening in case she wants to leave. Homework would work.

[x] Explain the magical girl system to Haruka.
[x] Explain your plans for fixing the system.
[x] Recruit Haruka as the team's first parental auxiliary.

Honestly, I too have half a mind to not even make specific points and just vote for the goals.

  • Mami: Safe, happy.
  • Haruka: Informed. Recruited.
  • Hitomi: Not pissed off.
  • Kyubey: Insulted.
...Yeah, that looks like a pretty good vote. Go for it. :D

Seriously, though, we tend to get better results when we give general direction and let Sabrina figure things out. Sometimes we're just trying to get so much done that we can't compress much, but the rest of the time we're more likely screw ourselves up by putting in too much detail than we are to miss things because we didn't put them in.

Sound OK, but Hitomi should still be first priority.

Convincing Haruka that Hitomi is safe will probably take the full exposition of our grand plan. I don't think that anything less would suffice.

Maybe we could start with a blanket reassurance? "This is going to sound bad, but trust me, I have it under control, I just need to explain the problem before the solution makes sense.".

Heh, could play up the magical girlness of things. "Before I start, four key points that you should keep in mind. They will suddenly make sense to you when they become relevant. First: I can cleanse soul gems. Second: I can refresh grief seeds. Third: My abilities are almost axiomatically unique. Fourth: My friends say I would make a terrible empress. It's a good thing I have friends!"

Are you wanting to include the truth about Witches? Because if not you might need a sub vote for that.
I actually haven't decided; that's worth debating. Haruka is mature enough to handle it and it'd mean we wouldn't have to worry about her figuring it out on her own later. It'd be hard to do it right now, though, because we'd have to send Mami away and probably throw up a privacy sphere just to be sure.

Besides the fact KB would likely take it as an invitation to traumatize Mami some more... whenever we actually interact with Kyuubey, there's a surge of... Kyuubey apologism in the thread, that really worries me.
Probably has to do with the fact that we don't all actually hate Kyubey, but arguing about it is pointless if we're not interacting with him.

[:V] Did someone say omake shitposting?

After a bit more awkwardness, Mami begs off to help her cute juniors with their studying, leaving you to get down to brass tacks with Shizuki Haruka. And it's... nice. Nice to have an adult with distance who you can talk frankly and honestly with, no matter the questions or topics. At some point, you end up at the bar - who has a fully-stocked bar in their apartment?! It is just unreal, how much money these people must have - talking over a scotch on the rocks. Even though you told her you're underage, she just chuckled and said "that's business, kid".

You think the conversation is winding down and you're looking forward to getting back to Mami; it's been nearly an hour and you are in dire need of a hug. She must have noticed somehow with her creepy mom-senses, because that's when she springs her trap.

"So, what exactly is your relationship with Miss Tomoe?"

"Codependence!" you respond without hesitation, punctuating it with the clop of your old-fashioned glass on the polished wood of the bar.

...

Hmm, that probably could have come out better.

I mean literally, before starting explaining anything, realize Haruka knows Magical Girls regularly fight monsters, so reassuring her that Hitomi's not getting involved that should go first.

*pipes in*

Of course Haruka knows Hitomi's not involved with monster hunting right now: She doesn't have a soul gem ring.

*returns to rewrite*

Unless we can find something that sated his quota while fulfiling the end or better alternative with magica girls system we have now, i can only see him at best short term allied.

Whatever else happens, I would like to not drop any *bombs.
This is a bad time to be playing Tetris.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

I'm not sure she realizes how dangerous magical girling is; she seems to be treating it more like sailor moon than anything else. If she's willing to keep putting it off I think we can too. And besides, I figure it'll take her about three paragraphs to realize that she should be worrying about us more than she should be about Hitomi.

Something else I'm weighing:

[] Go out and grab everyone. Team meeting, turns out Hitomi's mom knew a meguca when she was our age.
[] Thank Haruka for breaking the ice.
[] Bring Haruka up to speed on megucaing and your plans for fixing it.
[] Recruit Haruka as the team's first parental auxiliary.

This would bring Haruka up to match Madoka, who holds our lowest clearance. Upsides are significant; our team is clearly doing well, we'd have people to back up our claims, and we can play off our friends (probably Sayaka and Kazumi in particular) to keep the mood up. Downside is that it'd take a bunch of time that everyone should really be spending on homework. Can we find a way to deal with that? Griefhax modafinil field or sleep-healer? Impromptu sleepover at the Shizukis' place to give us some extra time? ...Everyone makes clones for super teamwork? :V

Unfortunately, Hitomi's mother cannot summon muskets from under her skirt. If she could, this conversation would be a lot more interesting.

Tetris isn't a issue if Mami's not within earshot, I'm sure Firn realizes we don't want to discuss the witchbomb with Mami in the room, and Mami's not the type to listen at the keyhole. If we're playing tetris, it's the hacked version with nothing but 2x2 and line blocks. Easy peasy lemon squeezy, Usagi-chan!

Did you really forget the amount of times non-meguca go into Barriers with meguca.

... Including Haruka, at least once.
Not with us they don't. I didn't address that point because, If it came up, I'd honestly expect Sabrina to say that, no, she doesn't do that sort of thing with or without our prompting.

A dangerous environment is no place for a spectator if you can't be assured of their safety and we've been practicing that policy since the quest started.

Please explain to me how is Haruka supposed to know that, if we don't tell her.

Or would you rather spend minutes on end explaining everything else before assuaging Hitomi's mom's fears that her daughter might be taking walks through Witch Barriers?

Why does the point have to come up?

We're talking with Hitomi's mom. Hitomi just came home with seven magical girls. (And Madoka.)

How the hell is reassuring her of the fact Hitomi's life is not a danger, not priority number one?

Haruka snuck into a witch barrier exactly once, the first night she knew magic existed and before she knew what she was doing, and "received an enormous scolding" when the MG caught her! She presumably does not even know that taking muggles on witch hunts is possibility and would be horrified if she learned that anyone ever did it intentionally. Us taking Hitomi into witch barriers is not even in her hypothesis space. And past that she has zero information on any of the other things that threaten magical girls. As far as she knows Hitomi is in no danger whatsoever. I'm not even sure why she talked to us except to brag at us.

Alternatively, going on witch hunts with her friend was so routine that she didn't think it was worth mentioning, in which case she was never in any danger and expects the same performance from us. Again, no problem.

Veb. I have no words.

I'll just say once more, Haruka is a mom.

A good mom.

Worrying about her daughter is her job.

Her daughter just brought seven magical girls home. Those are her friends. That's her group she belongs to now. That's how she's likely to end up.

Haruka should be informed post-haste that is not the case. Anything else is needlessly cruel.
