Speaking of Mami... do Magical Girls actually need heads, or does she like wear her soul gem in her hair?
Mami indeed wears her Soul Gem in her hair; it was crushed in the incident. However, the precedent of an MG surviving without a brain is thin at best (the closest we've got is Homura shooting herself in Rebellion, but even then, we can't see if she actually penetrated her skull or just grazed it), and I'm not exactly inclined to test that theory.

Also, Firn, you misspelled "came" as "cam".

Alternatively, the sheer panic mami had when Homura pointed the gun at her own head could indicate that the brain is important for Meguca too. Or that Mami doesn't know the name Soul Gem is literal.

I'll bet on a little from column A, a little from column B...but mostly B.

Short term problems we need to deal with:
1.Hitomi's saved from the Elly witch kiss, but that'll still have a body count if Homura, Mami, or we don't stumble across it this timeline- plus Madoka if things don't follow the stations of canon.
2. Sayaka contract. We probably need to defuse it. Ask Mami if she could heal Hitomi/Kyousuke with magic when we get a chance.
3.Yuma is likely being beaten to death since Kyouko is still in her own territory and not cityhopping...or Oriko did something about that situation in between trolling Sabrina for giggles.
4.Kyouko first contact seems like it's off the table for now...unless Kyubey doesn't conveniently warn her that there are three megucas in Mitakihara and she decides to show up for some reason.

Long term problems:
1. Mami is currently slightly more stable and less self-destructive (also, not dead), but that can turn around so fast it isn't funny. More teamwork, social links and BEFRIENDING are called for.
2. Set up the team and keep it going.
3.Oriko's plan which currently seems to make no sense since we have no idea what her goals, endgame, or schemes are and what little evidence we have just raises more questions.
4. Nagisa trauma and pink/blue self-esteem issues.
5. Kyubey's absence is worrying. Shadowruns: when a Puella Magi makes a contract to solve the grief problem, he simply stops making contracts for a while and waits for her to get killed somehow before resuming business as usual.

Well, the only reason Madoka ran into this witch in the first place was that she was following Hitomi to begin with. If no one runs into the witch, the suicide party happens and we'll have quite a handful of dead civilians on our hands. This can potentially lead into future contracts with the family of the deceased.

2. Sayaka contract. We probably need to defuse it. Ask Mami if she could heal Hitomi/Kyousuke with magic when we get a chance.

Mami's healing magic is still meta knowledge. If we do this, I wouldn't ask her directly. I would float the suggestion of 'could magic help here?' and see if Mami catches on.

Yep.

2. Set up the team and keep it going.

Of course.

3.Oriko's plan which currently seems to make no sense since we have no idea what her goals, endgame, or schemes are and what little evidence we have just raises more questions.

I'm inclined to believe she's facilitating more contracts in preperation for walpurgis by having it so that key persons aren't around to avert civilian tragedy.

On a somewhat related note the business woman we failed to save could have family that will be impacted from her death. Thus, potential contract bait there.

4. Nagisa trauma and pink/blue self-esteem issues.

Blue's self esteem issues could end up exasperated because of green in the hospital. If Mami can't do anything because reasons, Sayaka is likely to contract. Mind you, even if Mami can do something, Sayaka could contract anyway because it's Sayaka and she's an idiot.

5. Kyubey's absence is worrying. Shadowruns: when a Puella Magi makes a contract to solve the grief problem, he simply stops making contracts for a while and waits for her to get killed somehow before resuming business as usual.

Since he made a contract with Oriko after making one with Sabrina, I doubt this is the case. He's probably distracted with Kasamino at the moment and possibly Yuma.

If we're setting up a real team then Sayaka contracting with a healing wish and thereby becoming a meguca with healing powers would actually be reasonably useful, since Mami's aren't really optimal I think.

Plus we could then we might at some point spin that off into a major money making opportunity by selling healing discretely to desperate rich people willing to try long shots and then tell their sick friends when it works.

A team healer is nice, but redundancy isn't quite so much when blue has a track record of self-destructing hilariously.

Profit's somewhat irrelevant compared with functional, relatively safe to use magic in general as a consequence of solving the grief problem. Plus selling Sayaka on that would be...interesting.

Fair enough.

My point with profit shouldn't be dismissed so easily though. It seems fairly common for megucas to be orphans and money could help a lot with mundane issues of housing and food and clothing.

Hypothesis: Due to the highly abnormal wish/powerset Sabrina has, Kyubey is remotely observing and recording data on her and is making himself scarce so as to not potentially skew the data with his presence. Observing her "in the wild", so to speak.

Especially since we're discussing 'adopting' (abducting) homeless megucas or those without families. Money would be awesome to have to feed/clothe them. Also, if we get Kyouko to come over and on good terms, we'd probably have to pay for her snack bills.

There's all sorts of ways magic could be used to make money, if Sayaka didn't want to pass out paid healing. Could go full TtS and start a courier service...

Kyouko being halfway hobo is one of my main considerations. Especially given we're already leeching on Mami so money might become an issue.

I really liked the backstory behind TtS even if I wasn't that fond of the plot itself, which largely motivates me in my thoughts for this quest as an opportunity to kind of play through that development.

The issue there is that TtS's cast is much better off in that murder over grief cubes is less viable, there isn't the Witch-out reveal to worry about, and the Incubators are merely occasionally incompetent when it comes to choosing sane contractees rather than actively trying to encourage everyone to get themselves killed.

Worth a shot, but unless we get Madoka to make her canon wish, we can't really pull off an exact rehash- break the system completely locally, yes, but anything more'd require resources/a system we don't currently have.
