Brockton's Celestial Forge (Worm/Jumpchain)

" His minimization and efficiency matters not in front of NANITES and all of the efficiency perks MC has. "
Armsmaster canonically has made nanites.
And in fact, nanites are literally in reach of his specialization.

It is explicitly mentioned that is how the nano-thorns work.
And Armsmaster using the Nanothorns would shred Joe to pieces currently.

Ya no, mc has invincibility forcefield, he can heal from the damage instantly even if the nanothrons shread his atoms somehow getting past his force fields.
Not to mention I dont see how he could even get in range to attack mc with them, or that mc couldn't instantly see how dangerous they are and take precautions.

Joe really shot himself in the foot by neglecting his hero reputation in favor of exponential tinkering, even before the Panacea healing incident or the Khepri slasher robbery. With the combined effect of PRT inertia, 'heroic' ass covering, and Coil meddling, anything positive Joe does is seen as villainous by the PRT.

The big problem with rescuing Weld is the Master/Stranger accusations that will immediately follow. Remember, they STILL haven't let Panacea out, in the middle of a bombing spree and gang war, with several Protectorate members down. The PRT would see it as Apeiron subverting one of the more popular case 53s and a Ward with his evil technology.

It would probably take him personally killing an endbringer with no collateral damage before the PRT even reconsider that stance, but that just means he'll be considered a heroically inclined S++ class threat, with all the baggage involved.

Which he probably already is if he stopped upgrading and focused entirely on building a super weapon or something similar.

Has he had the chance to inform his therapist that he's okay yet? Dr. Campbell is probably worried.

Kinda curious how he'll rescue Weld, now, without the guy ending up fused to whatever submarine vehicle protag invents. You can't make wooden submarine, right?
Only needs whatever surface that will touch Weld to be non-metallic. It's as easy as making a rubber or polymer coating. Hell, you could just throw a lasso around him, even if it used metal cabling. Who cares if the lasso gets stuck to Weld, it would just make dragging him to shore easier.
Ahh, I see it. Pairing someone up with their fancy gloves.
Standing by for the Rosie Palmer puns.

Though it operates on that scale, I don't think the nano-thorn actually uses nanites. More like nano-scale vibrating fibres or something similar.

I do agree, Joe really needs a PR person because he sure as hell not going to do it himself.
Definitely. Unfortunately I can't think of any canon characters that are suitable. The few who would be are either mad at him, are untrustworthy, have associations or pasts that would be bad for his PR, or are compromised.

Since he has the thought accelerated neural interface and undetectable communications, he should hop on the internet a few times a day to do it himself. It would literally take seconds, and he could answer the questions that have been piling up.

When you think about it, with that level of computing there is no excuse that he's letting this get so bad.

He can probably code some PR bots and algorithms in a few minutes of neural accelration, should be fairly doable, if modern humans can do it there is no way mc cant write up some code quickly to fully subvert the PR and public opinion about him.

He should really announce and do PR about Weld rescue heavily using his artistic skills to do meme warfare, video editing etc to put him in the best light possible before the PRT or anyone even has the chance to drive the narrative. He has the computational tools and the skills to do it so he has no excuses.

Not managing PR is causing massive damage to the potential good he can do and how fast he gets strong. He cant heal during a dire time because he didnt manage PR, he cant trade tinkertech to reverse engineer with heroes because he didn't manage PR, his public opinion has been trashed and people view him as a villain because he didnt manage PR and worst of all it wastes more time than it saves in the long term by not managing PR 5 days ago.

Why doesn't he record himself doing this acts and uploading it online himself. That way Public knows first hand he's a hero and debunk the idea that he's a master.

you want him to make an AI to manage internet forums for him? Why not just make a killbot that wants to whipe out humanity directly, skip the extra steps :)

But seriusly, such an ai would be ridiculously hard to program. it would need to understand nuances and memes, and psycology... hell even one that only flags him about major problems would be hard to code. Survey had a decent time to expand and get to know him, and still folded Garment under Unimportant Minor cape news.

and yeah, not managing PR is turing into a massive problem. A massive problem of his greatest personal weakness. maaaby go see if there is some paperwork or literally anything he can use to prognosticate abit more before he deals with the massive, massive pain in the neck that THAT is going to be...

He also has the videos from the bomb fight from his omnitool and mech so he can edit that with his art perks and release that to debunk master claims and boost his image too.

He doesn't need a full-scale AI for it, just some bots and algorithms. Modern companies and countries already do this, there is no way in hell something equivalent to this is not in one of his techbases.

You dont need to understand nuances and memes, you just need to set up the bayesian prediction algorithms and feed it data. You think the coders who make bots in the real world deeply understand psychology? Not to mention mc deeply understands the human mind and its emotional responses because of all his art perks some of which can directly let him induce emotions from seeing the art.

Joe is so focused in Tinkering more tech and preparing for future threats that he is missing solvable social problems by simply TALKING to them or having someone explain his shit, weirdly kinda like Armsmaster's social problems.

I mean most of the problems that the he is facing are usually caused or at least butterflied by himself.
  • Why is he labeled as a villain? Because he gave known VILLAINS very dangerous and lethal weapons, surprise surprise villains use it against heroes leading to disaster
  • Why is Brockton Bay's resident healer not healing in this time of crisis? Because MC decided to use his metaknowledge when knowing things you shouldn't is an automatic red flag for the PRT and pushed a lot of Amy's buttons and using an unknown healing method when there is a precedent for them about power induced healing
  • Why are New Wave, a hero group not being more effective in helping in this disaster? Because of the MC's actions revealed all their shit to the fan in a not so discrete fashion
  • Why is there a new player in BB making things more of a problem? Because the MC's actions leading to a near bloodbath of a Ward leading to a transfer and baggage from those transfers
The last ones are a bit of a stretch since they are butterflies like March. Same with New Wave's problems since it's not the MC's fault they are a wreck but it was the MC's fault that their secrets were thrown out and I'm sure if someone would reveal all of the MC's secrets and personal problems and issues he would also throw a fit.

The first two however are all his fault and could have been solved if he had actually been discrete or went ahead and explained to the PRT on what happened (not the smartest move but better than literally doing nothing). Yet instead of trying to salvage things and explain he ran away to Tinkering and let the problems stew and not correct the misinformation (i.e. Kheperion) that were being spread he did...nothing and let people make their own conclusions from misunderstandings. I don't even think he even know half the problems he caused or how the people are perceiving him if it weren't for Tattletale telling him

He's a great Tinker yes, the most powerful and still growing but as a person he has a shit ton of problems and issues that leads to more problems, which is just so Parahuman. Powers are just that powers and it doesn't help with his own issues and problems. This isn't really much of a criticism to the fic because I really like it, yes a lot of the current problems are annoying especially since it could be solved if the MC actually learns to face the consequences of the shit he did and it really shows that even with meta knowledge it doesn't stop others from doing shit or the butterflies that follow.

I feel like you're forgetting that the guy very much doesn't do well in social situations, and indeed was seeing a counsellor about it prior to the story beginning - we even got to see a session right before the Bakuda battle. Managing your public perception is very much a social thing, so I can totally get why he's putting off dealing with it, or even just checking up on how people are reacting to his actions the prior evening (fighting Bakuda, rescuing Undersiders, de-bombing random people, etc).

Personally, I feel it's a great character flaw to slowly overcome as the story progresses. He sure isn't going to be stifled when it comes to inventions and tinkering, with his powerset, beyond the 'time to make X' aspect - and that one's mainly been negated as of this chapter.

His NANITES are nowhere nears good as the MC, our MC can make better blades and armor of he tries, our MC has magic and shit that would ignore the blades, and he has the invincibility potion. Our MC could make something as good as nanothorns in like a day and armsy took ages to do so. So tell me if this isn't good enough for you...

WTF does Armsmaster bring to the table?

There isn't much more time he can spend ignoring the mud-slinging that is the aftermath of a debacle, and only way he can deal with it is to actually address the issues being raised. A video of the battle or such would help.

And it's not like he is afraid of interacting on PHO, if he had been, he couldn't have been functioning as well as was shown in the Gym-sections. He is, primarily, escaping from a what he deems a 'failure' in the Bakuda episode.

Personally, I quite like the techno babble and stuff like that, but that's just because I like seeing a set of parameters and then seeing how it can be exploited and utilised for maximum possible shenanigans, so this entire fic just makes me giddy.

Kinda curious how he'll rescue Weld, now, without the guy ending up fused to whatever submarine vehicle protag invents. You can't make wooden submarine, right?
This made me think of joe constructing a plastic model submarine, and then disassembling and reassembling it over and over until it's the size of an actual submarine.

In terms of Resource and Tinkers? Nearly nothing, Joe is near self sufficient at this point and could build an army, things like resource wouldn't be the reason he should straighten things out with the PRT. It would be for PR and to gain the trust of the people, the PRT has a lot of problems but they are still a law enforcement agency of the the government dealing with power related things. Joe wants to spread his healing and help more people? Willy nilly healing ramdom people would not suffice when there is a precedent about "healing" capes especially if they have unknown Master/Stranger side effects. Are the PRT correct about this assessment? No but Joe has to prove it, something he hasn't done all the while ringing the redflags of the PRT with his meta knowledge and selling dangerous weapons to villains.

Basically Joe going to the PRT to help would be an extension of trust, him proving he is legit and the PRT not arresting every single one he helps for Master/Stranger protocols and letting him spread out his healing faster, something they would probably beg for especially with the current diasaster, and getting the normal civilians to trust him better and not have any more misunderstandings.

Hell according to the Weld Interlude the reason Weld and Fletchette are even in BB are to recruit him because he is that valuable to them, and both capes being a near non factor to Apeirion means the PRT thinks they would have a better chance at talking to him. After Joe rescues Weld and they talk Joe would likely have a better shot at dealing with the PRT because them interacting is what the big wigs of the PRT actually want. Fuck what Piggot wants especially since she is on thin ice for them right now and they really want the extremely potent healer with them eapecially with the chance that could spread his healing and other PRT Tinkers working with him for better results

Except for the fact that joining the PRT comes with massive downsides and would cripple mc and prevent him from growing and making stuff he desperately needs. Everything he would be forced to share like the details of his powers, his abilities would go to he precogs even after he gets precog protection making it impossible for him to win against the real threats.

He can already heal without needing to join, he just needs to take control of the public narrative using his art perks and some good coding. That way he can get the best of both worlds without the crippling restrictions and downsides that would come with associating with the PRT in any real way.

I don't think he means that they need to join... I think he means a mutually usefull business relationship.

I mean they are basically controlling a lot of the narrative (no matter how bullshit) so it would make it easier. As far as i understood it he meant that they would give him face so to say and help him, naturally this would come with power testing (this would be bad in many ways so i see your point.) and wouldn't be well welcome, but i am sure he could do things without that, though it would take much longer.

Hm, I just reread the latest chapter and noticed something missing. I think the author made a comment somewhere that Samurai Jack Alchemy would come with tea making, as it was practically a step away from potion making. I did not see any tea equipment in the lab upgrades.

On the bright side, it inspired me to write this omake.

Wow, this chapter sure brought a big boost in the protagonist's powerset and productivity, even if it was most of a chapter spent entirely in his dimensional space talking to himself (and Garment). T'was an enjoyable ride anyway, and the continued characterisation of his various powers (eg; Transformers dismissal of human technology, the clones being willing to argue or snark at the original, Garment in general, the little AI he made) is a delight to read.

Joe has gotten the tech base set up to begin construction at least base level Mass Effect technology. Aside from obvious stuff like ceramics and plastics infinite eezo opens a lot of options for mass field and remote manipulation technology.

There's also the option to just stuff him in a burlap sack and drop him off on the PRT doorstep.

Thank you, corrected.

The 'Boardwalk video' was referencing cell phone footage of Joe riding through traffic at high speed on the way to rescue the Undersiders. With the blackout and his omni-tool active it was fairly noticeable and the pieces were put together following the Uber & Leet broadcast.

Hey OP?

Just a heads up for you.
So long as Taylor is 15-17 years old in story, make sure the perceived romance between her and the MC doesn't really happen.

Let it remain as a shipping joke for the media.

The instant you even imply MC and Taylor might ACTUALLY try dating or something, the mods on Sufficient Velocity and Spacebattles will shut you down.

I am 99% sure you are aware of this due to comments made in story, just figured I could assure myself you are aware by warning you myself.

I love this story, it is the most well written Worm fic currently being consistently updated, so I don't want it shut down from stupid accusations of pedo writing or something.

So be careful with that, and I am eagerly awaiting the next chapter.

To officially address this, I will not be writing anything even resembling a romantic relationship between Joe and Taylor. I'm aware of the issues around this kind of thing and am making sure to step very carefully. It will never go any further than people thinking they might be a couple, and even that will be limited to comments and have nothing explicit connected to it.

Joe obviously has no romantic interest in Taylor, and Taylor believes that Joe's concern for her is based around flagging his thinker power with her undercover work. Both of them will feel horrible about the implications being circulated, though Joe will be significantly more horrified. This is about how things can look to the public without proper context and how hard it can be to change that kind of impression. That is the beginning and end of it.

I do not have any intention of producing a controversial story or causing any stress for the SV staff. I will be handling this with caution and heed any advice or warnings about the presentation of the material. I don't think there will be any problems, but I wanted to clearly state that I am not being cavalier about this topic.

There are many MANY other ways than teaming up with Shitmaster. Velocity, assault, and battery are much better.

Is it even possible for him to have a relationship with anyone?

Putting aside the whole secret identity issue, everything he does and everything he touches is being affected by his power, which is increasing exponentially.

At the very least, there's multiple copies of him running around with him being temporarily sped up mentally... That's a hell of a situation to add dating to.

And if he just needs an emotional connection, without requiring a sexual angle to it, he might already have something similar to that with garment. She's acting something like a roommate friend or just comrade at the moment... Which is something he really needs.

No offense, I unexpectedly liked the text, but the amount of technical details and completely unnecessary details per square centimeter just physically kill any possible reading pleasure. I don't think I opened America with this statement - dozens of people have already said the same thing before me. I'll just be another of these dudes, okay?

The technological porn descriptions is part of this fic' identity by now. It isn't for everyone, but I don't think the author should change them.

Taylor NEED to read that comment, it would do so much good to her self-esteem.

She already know she have a overly powerful Tinker who is in love with her (or whatever his power is saying about her). And she feel horrible about it, because she think she corrupted him to villainy or something. See the addendum of the previous chapter.

The instant you even imply MC and Taylor might ACTUALLY try dating or something, the mods on Sufficient Velocity and Spacebattles will shut you down.

This fic isn't only on Sufficient Velocity, it's also on Archive of our own and fanfiction.net. So does it really matter ? If the rules here doesn't allow the author to write what he want, he can go elsewhere.

Not that I think he will do it, Joe seems very disturbed with the idea of dating a 15 years old.

Question, why work with other heros?

On top of my head:
- Public relationship, the one thing the PRT/protectorate is always great at (and Apeiron is apparently very poor at).
- Access to full warehouse of broken tinkertech for reverse engineering
- Act as a force multiplier by equipping the PRT with shiny tinkertech that require no maintenance. Apeiron can kick a lot of ass, but he can't be everywhere at the same time, unlike the PRT.
- Having an official government behind him can open him a lot of doors.
- Oh, yeah, and no risk of S threat classification / kill order.

you want him to make an AI to manage internet forums for him? Why not just make a killbot that wants to whipe out humanity directly, skip the extra steps

Dragon is moderating PHO. Go re-read the previous chapters (especially chapter 18 - Debut) knowing who "Tin_Mother" is...

Except for the fact that joining the PRT comes with massive downsides and would cripple mc and prevent him from growing and making stuff he desperately needs

The worst downsides would only happen if he reveal his workshop to them. Nobody have to know he is working with nanites or making super advanced AI.

There's also the option to just stuff him in a burlap sack and drop him off on the PRT doorstep.

Best way to get Weld to be held for master/stranger protocols.
EDIT: ...wait, now that I think of it, Weld is immune to master powers because of the Manton effect (he count as inorganic for them). So saving Weld is a good way in putting good word into the PRT ears without tripping into master/stranger protocols (like he did with Amy).

At the very least, there's multiple copies of him running around with him being temporarily sped up mentally...

All I read is "he can make copies of himself for sexy time". :p

I think joe plans of saving weld could probably work to get better relations with maeby the wards but I think this will further humiliate the PRT because now not only will it seems that they can't respond to fight a major city threat but they can't even save their own members, let alone a very famous teenager like weld.

Also joe should plan a method to reveal weld is safe without Making him go to master containment, which I'm sure Weld will not be happy after being stuck in the ocean for 24 hours.

MPs: sorry if it reads bad I'm writing this on my phone.

Its not just about the WH, mc cant control what power he gets and he cant turn them off, there is no toggle perk in V1 CF either. There is simply no way he could hide that he is gaining new powers, some of mcs perks would change his body wholesale, some will alter his mind dramatically which would trip m/s protocols every time. Any tech he shares with anyone also goes to ziz, scion, shards and cauldron until he gets a fiat backed black boxing perk, which I am not even sure exists in CFv1. There is also the fact that it would be impossible to use the nanites or the AIs in the field without them getting revealed.

Simply too many risks and downsides for little to no benefit.

I'll be honest. I bought the Joe/Taylor misinterpretation from the Undersiders, mainly with Alec pushing it. But 'supermodel' allegations aside, it didn't really make any sense to me for the general public to assume he was there for Khepri in particular. Or Bakuda to assume it for that matter. Yeah, he named Khepri... after Bakuda specifically demanded to keep Khepri. He literally never named her until Bakuda brought her up. He's shown no bias whatsoever towards her, unless you count 'not willing to leave a Undersider behind' as bias.

So 'funny' as it is, why are outsiders jumping on the same bandwagon when they have no reason to even see one? Heck, if they must ship, they ought to be shipping him with the blonde in spandex that called him in, not the creepy walking insect. (talking her costume, here, and her perception on camera in canon)

But no, just Khepri on PHO.

It really feels like the author/audience joke has bled into the story without in-story supporting evidence to back it up.
