Brockton's Celestial Forge (Worm/Jumpchain)

At least he had someone to seriously discuss the local tactical situation with. Honestly, he found himself envying the rest of his team. Most of them were oblivious to the larger concerns and free to trade stories and joke with the local Wards while he reviewed the local situation with Clockblocker.
"Holding up traffic will do that." Clockblocker said in a light tone. The levity seemed somehow out of place for someone with so serious a reputation, but Tecton appreciated the effort.
Clockblocker was still a special kind of imposing. Probably because of that blank mask with the abstract and animated design moving across it. Everett had to wonder if that had been an intentional choice, if someone in the PRT public relations department had leaned into a dehumanizing angle to accentuate the kind of presence that seemed to come naturally to the striker.
This Clockblocker slander kept cracking me up. It's hilarious to see Clock from the perspective of someone who only met him after he stepped up, and doesn't know about his earlier jokester personality as a contrast. And also drawing incorrect conclusions from that lack of familiarity.

They were coming up on the one-week anniversary of the Ungodly Hour, which had been a week after his own team had been brutalized by the Undersiders, which had been barely a week after Lung had first been captured.
This puts in perspective how much has happened in such a short time, but canon also had a pretty compressed timeline didn't it?

Nobel, objective, dignified.
Noble, there is no grand award ceremony involved here.

Director Piggot wanted me hidden away from medical observation.
for, but I think someone caught that one already.

Gully let out a squeak as she looked into his face. A tiny, cute squeak. He quickly caught himself and set her back down.
Everett was so taken that he picked her up without consciously realising, didn't he?

From WOGs Gully is physically an adult but that doesn't matter when no memories and every single She Hulk comparison has been shot down so it's more like those skinny Wonder Woman designs
The same WoG that "shots down" She-Hulk comparison actually compares her to She-Hulk:
She-Hulk's appearance has varied considerably over the years, and not just with respect to the bulked out depiction you've gotten in some recent comics (War of the Realms probably had the worst examples of that). Even ignoring that kind of extreme, across the run of the character you have depictions that are much too muscular or curvy in comparison to Gully. That picture is a bit too muscular for Gully, but the kind of build you saw from She-Hulk in the original Sensational She-Hulk comics (the 1989-1994 run) would probably be pretty close to what Gully ended up with in her larger form. Do keep in mind that Gully is 8 foot 6 inches, while She-Hulk is 'only' 6 foot 7 inches. A similar figure, scaled up to that degree, makes a bit more of an impression.

Also, having no explicit memories does not instantly make one a child, if that what you're implying by saying "but that doesn't matter when no memories". More so when an individual clearly capable of mature and reasonable though patterns and demonstrates repeatedly that implicit memories are still intact.

Slug's power either suck at making blank slates, or that was never a goal of the memory wipe and all they needed was just cleaning up Cauldron's trail.

Always interesting to see how capes outside of the Bay view the Wards of Brockton.
The BB Wards are truly built different, some of the most skilled or experienced wards in the country!

Honestly, I'm curious if at some point in the future, the whole "Terminus Project" experiment will get leaked. Because as much as Piggot messed up, like 90% of that is because of the Terminus Project not allowing her to get any assistance and all her requests being denied as Cauldron wanted to see a villain take over the Bay.

I mean, it was pretty self evident that Piggot's own appointment was specifically to make Terminus work as well. As many have pointed out in the fic since Apeiron first brought it up to Panacea, her sanity and stance on parahumans is questionable considering her position. Putting someone who hates Parahumans in charge of them was clearly a bad idea in the first place.

As for Clockblocker, it's really funny that a lot of the efforts of the PR team to downplay his previously irreverent attitude has led to his current serious attitude to be so magnified. They literally gave him a mask to hide his face to keep anyone from seeing him make funny faces or outrageous reactions during PR events, but now that he isn't compensating for it with over the top gestures and reactions, everyone sees him as imperious and immovable even when he tries to lighten the mood.

It's also pretty interesting that Dennis brought up how the way the public sees you can change in an instant during the advice he gave Everett - because that's exactly the kind of situation he has found himself in. Now that everyone has started seeing him as a serious hero, he can't escape it anymore. Even if he somehow manages to make himself look irreverent again once things have calmed down, everyone would expect him to be the serious leader again once the chips come down.

So his advice of just acting as you would regardless of how people would see you is actually very applicable to him too. After all, here he is, making jokes and trying to lighten the mood as he usually would and nobody seems to care anyway right?

Well, people are not made out of memories only. There are things like character, habits, tastes, expectations, motor skills, etc., which are not memories and can exist on their own. Yeah, being able to remember specific things in a format, which can be read by a person, is pretty useful, but we still can function without them. And usually, we do stuff without even thinking why or what we are actually doing. One can 'forget' how to ride a bike or/and how they learned to do so, but still be able to do it when asked. They will be a bit confused about why they can suddenly do it and why it feels so easy, so familiar. Consciousness will have some problems adjusting without memories and references, but other, more deep parts will function okay. And if needed, some false memories can always be created to fill up the void. At least I think so. 🤔

Slug's power either suck at making blank slates, or that was never a goal of the memory wipe and all they needed was just cleaning up Cauldron's trail.
Slug's goal (Or how Cauldron uses Slug, since he doesn't seem to be compos mentis himself) is to cover up Cauldron activities, not wipe people totally clean. Some stuff is meant to remain, to give Case 53's a slightly better chance. Remember, Cauldron generally wants the Case 53's to survive.

Pretty much every Case 53 knows at least their native language, even if it's really weird and obscure, most of them retain enough sense to not starve to death on the streets, they understand intrinsically that they've been changed and that there was a before, even if they don't understand why things are different now. It's not a lot, but the Case 53's being reduced to drooling vegetables isn't the intention. The only reason it is so intensive is because Cauldron hides that they get most of their volunteers / victims from other worlds, which requires wiping out so much that the victim cannot recognize that they're not in the right world. I'm... honestly not sure why they bother, considering nobody could realistically stop them from utilizing Doormaker except possibly Haywire, but I guess it's just less effort to extend the mindwipe while they're already wiping subjects like the victim's past, the Vials, how they came to be under Cauldron's 'care', and their treatment in Cauldron base than waste valuable time and effort to fend off interdimensional attempts from Case 53's trying to go home with the help of Tinkers like Dodge.

End of the world planning and powers? Nah, I'm here for the delicious teen romance drama! Gimme more of that, please! 🤣

Also, Tecton seeing Clockblocker as this supremely competent, intimidatingly confident, emotionally-mature hero is amazing. The best part is, he's not even wrong; Clockblocker just adapted really well to Brockton Bay going from a smoldering dumpster to a flaming dumpster.

Tbf to Dennis, he was also very mature for a teen in canon, even before Taylor happened. He just didn't show it much under his moodmaker persona.

There are things like character, habits, tastes, expectations, motor skills, etc., which are not memories and can exist on their own.
Those...those are memories. Well, at least a half of those. Habits, expectations and motors skill all examples of implicit memories, which a person does not recall like a remembrance of a birthday or something like that, but just uses unconsciously. Yes, like bike riding skills. Or playing a guitar. Or knowing language.

Part about memory wipe was me wondering if Slug even can erase implicit memory, as all examples of subjected to his power seem to still retain all of those, so I'm not even sure that his configuration of that Shard's power even can do it. Hell, not even sure if Aisha's configuration can, she never tried to erase someone's skill or implicit knowledge, even though her Shard probably can, as it supposed to be source of "how to manipulate human memories" Shards, and there are a couple of capes who can... erase... skills.

Or steal them! Holy shit, Victor's skill erasing part of power is derived from Aisha's Shard! And he used it on her to steal alchemy without notice! She is going to be so much more pissed if she finds out that she was basically outmanoeuvred on her own field.

That bitch Ms Grey is some mole, Cauldron patsy or worse, I tell'ya. I mean, now there is just too much focus on the fact she is out of place to not be a some sort of plot point. Yeah, it might be about the fact she is from NY and not local, but still.

Also, there were many loses in the evens around and in Ungodly Hour, but Dennis might be subject to the worst loss yet.
earlier I was stressing that it was stupid for the MC to reveal to Gully what's behind the curtain so to speak. But on further consideration... It doesn't really matter does it?
The PRT/Protectorate/Us Goverment/Cauldron can't really do anything about it, it may increase their interest in him a little but not considerably more than whatever happens with the S9 and aftermath. And is not like they have the ability to mess with passenger space

Not necessarily. Shards are great at reinventing bicycles so even if two shards do nearly the same thing, that doesnt mean they do it with similar principles let alone similar mechanics behind the execution.

I meant, they aren't really conscious things, which can be recalled/remembered like events in the usual way. It's still type of data that makes up human behavior and 'neural networks' to do different things. Various formats of information are stored in the brain, which I don't consider memories. Slug probably just erases memories, which can lead to leaks about the Cauldron's existence and operations, and are mostly factual things. Otherwise, all Case 53s would be in a state similar to late stages of dementia, I think, when even data about who the person is - it's completely lost too. I just don't like calling everything a memory, because some stored information just cannot be remembered in usual sense and more integrated into who the person is, than kept like a thing.

Although, it is interesting than Lethe cannot restore the information. It wasn't lost completely, but somehow scrambled and hidden, perhaps? She can pull off some antimemetic things after all - so Slug probably can also make some information unattainable... Maybe because Entities cannot actually destroy information? Because it's physically indestructible.

This whole situation makes me think too much about different possibilities.

True, entities can be quite something with using all kinds of bullshit to achieve similar effects, but here description of mechanics behind Victor's power from summit chapter:
The cape known as Victor propagates a reactive carrier wave dispersed through partially impregnated dimensional fabric anchored through feedback from perception centers. The effect is specific to memory engrams of cognitive neural structures, pairing a deterioration with data acquisition, generating the property that had been recognized as his 'skill theft' ability.
and here description of Aisha's from intrusion chapter:
Aisha cycled her power again and I felt the wave of energy search through my mind and find nothing to attach to.
So at the very least, both effects carried through energy wave and have a mechanic for recognizing required memory engrams. Not really decisive evidences that those effects are related, but still quite the similarities. Although, Slug's power is analogue to Aisha's and seems to be quite dissimilar, so those superficial similarities might mean nothing. But from storytelling perceptive it's more interesting if they mean something, me thinks.

Although, it is interesting than Lethe cannot restore the information.
If I had to guess from what she said about it:
It's definitely power induced. Something close to mine. Like disturbingly close to mine, but the mechanism is different enough that I can't roll it back. Not without a lot of work or by going technicolor.
Then I say it less a matter of "cannot at all" and more "cannot with what I have at hand". Like "going technicolor" is obviously a reference to neathbow, but I'm willing to bet "a lot of work" is actually a reference to call gems, meaning Aisha's Shard can revert what Slug done, but as Aisha herself has only part of it's power without using call gem, she can't.

Note that Aisha didn't say that she couldn't do it, but rather that doing it would involve things better off not turned to first thing, like "going technicolor". Given how she interacts directly with her shard using Prismatic Colors, this implies that her shard can do it... only that it's something too complex for her to tell it to do without using another painting as a medium.

"What am I supposed to do?" He whispered half to himself.

"There's a step ladder in the broom closet." Clockblocker said irreverently.

He looked down at the other Ward in shock. Eventually he managed to find his voice. "That's not… you know what I mean." He muttered.

"I know she likes you." Everett tensed, but Clockblocker pressed on. "Wasn't exactly subtle at the charity thing. And now she's hot." He shrugged. "I'm not really seeing the problem here."

Oh Clock, never change

Also it's easier to light up the mood when you know your message have gone to Apeiron and your father might get a miracle cure against his cancer. Thanks Gully Ravine !

Clockblocker is every bit as competent as Tecton think he is.

Want a proof ? He announced his cape name in advance to force the Protectorate hand. He invented new tactics with Vista. He know how to manage Shadow stalker (guy should get a medal for this). He detected the ambush at the gallery. He got in contact with Apeiron, something only Uppercrust managed to do until now. He's obviously a good leader.

...apparently he's even great at giving dating advice.

Does anyone know what the last Warhammer perk is? I'm looking through the reference sheet and can't find it.

Arch-magos or something. I don't remember the exact details, but of course it advance Joe in the hierarchy.

Lord is a master at foreshadowing (and the Forge is a master at trolling).

It would be hysterical if Joe goes out of his way to reverse engineer entire Mechanicus cult just so he could ascend to highest rank. And the very next thing he rolls that perk.

I think something along these lines happened after integrating spiritron computer into Workshop systems?

More that he just stopped pretending worm hints a lot at it and ward outright confirms it but Clockblocker is actually really observant which means he's noticed a lot of messed up stuff about the city and the way they do things he just likes to use humour to make light of it and get away with pointing it out.

Tecton, whose head is level with Gully's chest: "Yes, I can see why you picked that, it's very... fitting."

Gully's 8'6 so has over 2 and a half feet on him when he's out of his armour so his head is going to be lower than that.

You know, that book... the promise of such [DATA], that is probably enough on its own for some Shards to spontaneously find religion.

The mental images that come to mind amuse me, very much.

Such a shame shards are incapable of properly doing the rituals to get such data.

If Apeiron has 1 million haters, Vista is one of them, if Apeiron has 1 hater Vista stands alone, if Apeiron has 0 haters Vista is dead.

You forgot Brandish even if everyone else has smelled the crazy she's putting out and have made her stop driving herself into the ground and rest she won't have changed her mind so soon.

So Aisha will finally come clean to Brian?

Also, am I the only one uncomfortable with Gully's new looks and the reactions? How old is she exactly? Also, how old is Tecton? And Garment and Flechette for that matter?

Aisha set it up this way so she doesn't have to come clean her plan is basically get her dad, Brian and Joe together in the gym at the same time and hope the truth comes out.

Gully is unknown exactly but from context she seems to have gotten a vial over frustrations over being tiny. That means considering how long the process is and the means it requires to get them she'd be at least 14 and probably be at least 15 by the time Cauldron released her on bet. Additionally, since then she's spent 4 or 5 years as a ward making it reasonable to say she's at least 19.

Tecton is iffy cause he's a ward but is ward leader so the oldest on his team except that since he was still on it during the s300 arc then he'd be 15 and a half at the oldest. Lily/Fletchette similarly was retconned into being 17 turning 18 this year in an ineffective attempt to make her canon relationship with the at least 21 Parian/Sabah less sketchy.

"Jesus! What do they even feed them in Brockton Bay?" - something like that, I think.

Probably more like what did the boat graveyard do to the water around there?

This puts in perspective how much has happened in such a short time, but canon also had a pretty compressed timeline didn't it?

Yep as in bcf canon starts around the 8th of April and the 15th of May is Levi atking the bay (and Vista's birthday). That's either arc 7 or 8 of worm and is after the bank robbery, all the ABB stuff, the undersiders atking the Gallery, meeting Coil and Coil unmasking the Empire capes. There's then a few weeks were basically nothing happens due to Taylor's mental state before it jumps right into the warlord arc including the nine and Echidna which is in the upper teens of arcs.

That then wraps up and there's a timeskip of about a month before the wards stuff starts including the Behemoth fight in arc 24 before it does a few more chapters with large gaps before it's the s300 arc and gm which for context the last 3 or so arcs of the 31 are with the QAylor stuff happening.

It was also that they could tell Gully was on the verge of being overwhelmed so called it a day.

It would be hysterical if Joe goes out of his way to reverse engineer entire Mechanicus cult just so he could ascend to highest rank. And the very next thing he rolls that perk.

I think something along these lines happened after integrating spiritron computer into Workshop systems?

I think it was with Cybertronium since Joe went to a lot of effort to come up with a big ritual to make it with alchemy that he and the duplicates rushed through and barely finished only for the forge to go congratulations have some from a perk as your reward.

Wow. I just love how Tecton is viewing the Wards, versus how they view themselves. It's such a difference!!

Poor Clockblocker, just when he wants to be the least responsible, he is now viewed with awe by so many other Wards.

You know, once this is all over and Piggot has been stepped back, The Wards will get a chance to do visits to other cities and get freaked out as to how their peers view them.
The Brockton Wards do a PR tour so everyone can see they aren't that scary. The tour is nothing but then scaring the other Wards teams with war stories and low ranking Protectorate members with less experience than the BB Wards getting assigned to supervise the meetups because they need the advice.
Joe will finally find out that Brian and Aisha are siblings. But would their father Mr. Laborn find out that his children are parahuman? He would be right there. How did that work out in canon Worm by the way?
I think they would be reluctant to do it in a civilian space, but if emotions are flaring, and they need to have a private conversation. Either Joe or Aisha could isolate Brian, Aisha, and Joe from the rest of the gym to have a chat.

Taylor on the outside vs Taylor internal monologue moment

Garment see above, Gully is a bit hard to say (biologically no clue, but presumably a teenager or someone would have said something after she shifted back into her original form, but how do you decide mental age for someone who woke up with no concrete memories but all the behaviour you learn as a child still there a few years ago?)
Flechette is 17 at this point, Tecton no clue (part of the protectorate in 19.4, so probably also around there?

IIRC WoG was that the PRT checked how old Gully was using the magical wonder that is medical science, and at least now we know that, while not given an exact age, Gully is still Ward age if Dragon's comment about her still having some growth in her is anything to go by.

That The Pleician Tome would utterly suck if he got it early on. Could you imagine not having any WH40K perks, or reverse engineering perks and getting that?

Massive table-sized creepy book that's rather useless. You likely couldn't even use it as a table.

Now, imagine getting it and not having that warehouse unlocked. Toss a table cloth over it and forget about it?

I'm suddenly wondering what the Joe in Girl Genius would do with it. Damn, could you imagine Sparks pouring through it?

I love Clockblocker growing up and giving proper dating advice. Poor guy would love to return to being merely the team joker.

I wonder who will finally tell Kid Win about his specialty. It'd likely be someone totally surprising.

So we are getting a gym scene before the Crystal date? Hmm, doesn't Aisha's dad think Brian and Alec are dating? Now, we just need Alec there. I can't wait for Aisha to comment to Brian about how she and Joe are on "Team Garment" due to helping her out and being her odd job guy.

Does anyone know what the last Warhammer perk is? I'm looking through the reference sheet and can't find it.
The perk is Arch-Magos it is worth 500 points and its description is this
Skill in using and repairing arcane technologies including Archeotech and Xenotech.
and it also presumably makes you an Arch-Magos with all knowledge that being an Arch-Magos would entail
