Crack fic ideas aside, if Rebuild is Shinji's attempt at fixing NGE canon, why would he start up a fledgling romance with Rei? Wouldn't greeting Asuka with open arms be more in-line with a fix-fic taking to reality?

And that the square root of minus one being incalculable is more of a current limitation of our bio-logical mathematical circuits than an actual incalculable equation? I liked the pre-Horus Heresy novels conception of the Alpha Legion the best. IIRC, they were renegade but not Chaos before the novels repenned them. Now... eh, Chaos sucks, so I suppose I'll have to stick with loyalists. The Salamanders are nice, just a bit too obsessed with their artifact hunt. And closing in the "former Legions with unusual tactics" column, the Raven Guards. Oh, and the Space Wolves telling Gulliman to GTFO, of course.

Not to start a big shipping debate, but there's a reason three naked girls kept showing up in his fantasies and not one. Shinji's attitude towards attraction and romance was at best confused.

Not to negate that, you're right that he was 14 and exposed (heh) to attractive girls really for the first time in his life, but it was Asuka's death and Asuka's rejection (or his hallucination of her rejection) that well and truly broke him in EoE. Misato was never really an option outside vague fantasies when he's aggravated by Asuka's hostility and Rei's aloofness, and NGE-Rei is... NGE-Rei.
I don't mean to deny his attraction to any of the girls (again, heh), but realistically speaking even in his state I can't imagine he ever thought about anyone but Asuka in those terms.
