They had one of their own mages trying to mentally probe the human, to find out what he knew and what his friends were up to. The human could feel the attempt to get into his mind, so just sat happily in his cage and mentally recited They Might Be Giants lyrics until the Fae broke down in tears trying to understand WTF the human was even going on about.

Well, I'm not sure if that can be described as "-amory". What has existed historically and was very widespread was polygyny, i.e. one man with several wives and concubines. And that was much more about status than anything love, with the wives usually seen as something more akin to property. Considering that, it's maybe not such a bad thing that fell into disuse so often. There is nothing inherently wrong with non-monogamy, but as long as gender equality isn't even an idea in a society, monogamy does grant a sort of protection to women. However, since in modern societies we do have gender equality as an ideal, we can also found non-monogamous relationship among equal members.
Of course, aside from that, colonialism still fucked everything up. Congo Free State, Herero genocide, Bengal famines... yay...
Oh, one other thing I wanted to say: It's Shinji who's being assertive here, which I like. He knows he can fully trust Asuka, after all.
