You do realize we're talking about Manga!Shinji?
Wait, we are?

When did we switch to that? I haven't read the manga, but since I know it takes drastically different approaches to some things; I don't think it's necessarily possible to directly say it's the same Yui there as in the series. For one thing, Asuka's backstory is rather different, from what I know of the manga and doesn't Gendo bust out an AT field at some point?

Yeah, we were comparing the bakelite scene between manga and anime, were in the former Shinji yells at Yui to move, resulting in him saving Asuka; while in the latter he has a breakdown, leading to the redhead's gruesome death.

Rei setting up and then rigging a game of 7 Minutes in Heaven for Asuka's birthday party confirmed.
Telekinetic tricks should be the easiest AT field hax... and I suppose since it's Asuka's birthday, she can get special treatment...

But ultimately, a game for activities between two players isn't gonna cut it anymore :D

Let me guess the other half of the time she is imagining kissing Asuka, Yes?
I must admit, that sentence structure had me confused for a bit. Rei is speaking of the times she thinks of "such things" like kisses. And half of that time she spends thinking of Shinji. So it seems pretty clear what the other half of that time is, yes ;)

For one thing, Asuka's backstory is rather different, from what I know of the manga and doesn't Gendo bust out an AT field at some point?
Asuka doesn't have a father, just a genetic donor from the sperm bank. Which leads to the question where "Langley" comes from, come to think of it... then again, her mother's full name isn't stated in the manga, IIRC, so, who knows... as for Gendo, maybe he even could do the same in the anime. He uses the Adam foetus in his hand for this neat little trick.

It is possible that Yui is different here. What seems to remain largely a constant are the emotional circumstances of Shinji; how they came about can be changed. Still, the manga is often anime-"compatible" - like, as I've said, it being conceivable that anime Gendo could also establish an AT field or it being conceivable that Kaji has the same background in the anime he gets in the manga. And Strypgia's argument does make some sense to me... of course, so does your argument concerning EVA-01's movement in episode 1.

....which, in my most profound annoyance with the Manga, is then overlooked entirely, and Instrumentality kicks off almost like the Series. WTF? That changes everything! Shinji's no longer willingly choosing to end everything because he has no reason to live, Asuka has no reason to blow him off during Instrumentality, and everything should be different! Instead... nothing.
This is one of the reasons I dislike the later volumes of the Manga version. I understand Sadamoto couldn't deviate THAT much from the source material (which I disagree on a few levels, but that's not the point.) and that Instrumentality had to occur - but the whole scenario was a complete mess. In EoE, you could at least understand the outlines of the metaphysical process: Shinji loses his ego, the MPs use him as catalyst, things go Tang.
Hmmm. I smell fanfic potential ;)

Though to be fair to the manga EoE, you gotta love Rei's single snark line in the entire series: *Rips off Gendo's Adam hand* "This isn't my hand" *grows new hand* "This is my hand".

Vis A vis Unit-01 moving in Ep 1, I'd have to point out there's a vast difference in Yui seeing something literally right in front of her face, and sensing what's happening to Unit-02 above her and through a minimum of several hundred meters of rock and armor layers. And it still aligns with my point: Unit-01 moves in response to Shinji, either him in danger or when he calls to it.

It's not Asuka's death that triggers Unit-01 moving: It's Shinji actually saying something out loud about it. That's when Yui goes 'Oh, you want us to launch, Shinji? Ok, I can do that!' BOOM.
I wanted to say something profound about this, but got sidetracked at the thought of Yui exclaiming, "Mommy-Dearest to the rescue!"

Which really, really, really doesn't fit with the tone of the scene, but that's basically what's going on.

I must admit, that sentence structure had me confused for a bit. Rei is speaking of the times she thinks of "such things" like kisses. And half of that time she spends thinking of Shinji. So it seems pretty clear what the other half of that time is, yes ;)
Ramiel?

What, do you want everyone on Earth to die horribly?
Oy -- even at its closest, Jupiter is still four times farther away than the Sun, and only small fraction of the mass (thus much dimmer even if ignited).

@Quadhelix confirmed as SEELE member.
Oy!

"Third Child, First Child, report to Commander Ikari's office immediately."

Shinji glanced up at the speaker, as did Rei.

"What does he want?" hissed Shinji. He and Rei had been enjoying a perfectly nice lunch with Asuka after a long training session. Apparently his father felt the need to shit all over that. 'The Bitch' had kept Kaworu back to follow up on some odd readings. Sighing, he set down his bento and stood up. "Hopefully this won't take long. Guess we'll see you later."

"No," said Asuka, firmly. "I'm coming with you. Anything he can say to you he can say to me too."

"He… might not take that well."

"And? Fuck him," replied Asuka, "Now let's get going and get this over with."

And so, the three arrived at the office of their theoretical superior. Rather surprisingly, the door was already open.

"Come in," came the commander's voice, as the trio approached. They filed in to a truly bizarre sight. Commander Ikari was in front of his desk, leaning against it. The room was fully lit up, something indiscernible was scattered across the desk. Behind them, the door closed – and locked. Gendo Ikari looked up at them, through his amber glasses, and surveyed them each in turn.

After a silence that seemed to stretch on for millennia, he spoke.

"I have… had something of a revelation. I… Shinji, I've betrayed you. I've betrayed you, Yui and everything I should have ever held dear."

His head fell into his hands, deep breaths sounding from him. The three gaped at him in complete shock as the commander fought to remain in control. He succeeded, barely, raising his head to continue.

"I have failed you. Completely and utterly," he turned to Rei, "And you as well. I… I'm so sorry, Rei. I can make no excuses. I do not expect you to forgive me – either of you. Just know, from here on out, I will be doing everything in my power to ensure you both have a future worth fighting for."

He'd marched across the office as he was speaking and now stood before them. Without waiting for them to even process what he had just told them, Gendo pulled both Shinji and Rei into a bone-crushing hug.

It was short-lived.

With something between a cry and a roar, Shinji pulled himself out of his father's grip. Angry tears beginning to fall down his face, eyes wide with hurt and anger. On the verge of hyperventilation, face contorted almost beyond recognition, the boy began backing away from Gendo.

"FUCK YOU!" he screeched, "AFTER EVERYTHING YOU DID, YOU THINK YOU HAVE ANY RIGHT TO JUST HUG ME LIKE IT NEVER HAPPENED! H-HOW DARE YOU! YOU DISGUST ME IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE, YOU DECREPIT, VILE, PATHETIC PIECE OF SHIT!"

Gendo released Rei, who hadn't reacted at all, and moved towards his son.

"Shinji-"

"SHUT UP! I HATE YOU! Just… just stay away from me!"

Before Gendo could reply, Shinji turned and fled.

Without hesitation, Asuka turned and raced after him, shooting a look of pure malice over her shoulder at Gendo as she went.

Gendo bowed his head, despondently. As he had feared, Shinji was now forever out of his reach. But what about Rei. He turned to her.

Rei was stood rigid. Staring ahead, eyes glazed over and glistening. Her hands balled into fists, then spread open, before closing again. Mouth ajar, she let out a few, disjointed, croaky sounds. Her mind was a complete whirlwind, a mess of confusion, conflict, anger, joy. She didn't know what to do. What should she do? She was shattered. Completely and utterly. She was broken from her reverie by his interruption.

"Rei?"

She turned, on the spot, to look at him. A tear rolled down her cheek. The first of many yet to come. She finally spoke.

"Why does it hurt so much? ... So much?... Why... does it hurt... so much?"

Gendo made to hug her again, only for her to flinch and step backwards. He stopped short and stared into her eyes. It clicked in his head. She was off her meds. She hadn't been taking them for a while now.

Trembling, Rei took a few more hesitant steps back, before breaking into a run and fleeing the office.

Forlorn, Gendo fell to his knees.

'They didn't even let me tell them about Yui…'

Gendo stayed, kneeling on his own office floor for a while. When he was ready, he mustered his full composure and stood. He had a dodecatuple murder to plan.

Asuka found Shinji by the lake.

He was sitting, cross-legged, gazing out at the shimmering waters. She came up behind him, knelt down and slid her arms around him. She didn't know what to say. She wasn't sure there was anything she could say. They just stayed like that for some time.

"Asuka! I… I don't know what to do," Shinji finally said, his voice quavering.

"Oh, Shinji," Asuka's voice was little more than a croak.

"Help me!"

She nuzzled his neck in reply.

"I will, Shinji. I will. Let's get you home."

She guided him up and led him away. Digging out her phone as they went, Asuka quickly messaged Hikari and Kaworu about Rei – hopefully one of them would find her. She did not like the thought of leaving Rei alone with the prize twat. As she brought Shinji towards the Geofront trams, she never one let go of him, with her mouth almost permanently by his ear. She kept up a stream of encouragement and sweet nothings as they boarded the tram.

"It'll be okay, Shinji."

"I'm here Shinji."

"I love you."

"I need you, Asuka."

Asuka never knew how long it took her to slowly coax him back to their apartment, just that she was glad to finally shut the door to their room and pull him into bed with her. She held him as he finally let all his walls down and just cried, cried into her. He clutched her desperately and poured out all his anguish and conflict. She clutched him back just as hard, rocking back and forth every now and then.

As he finally returned to lucidity, he gazed into Asuka's eyes and kissed her. It wasn't long, or particularly involved, but it was enough.

"Th-thanks," he said, when they broke apart. "I… don't know what to do. I thought that I could just write him off as a lost cause. But now… I just don't know."

Asuka took a deep breath as she thought about exactly what she wanted to say. Piecing together her thoughts, she began.

"Shinji. It's okay to want to open yourself up to him… but. It's going to be on him. If he wants you back, he's got to earn you back. You owe him nothing! You hear me, my dearest baka!"

"I… guess-"

"You guess nothing! He does not deserve you and you don't have to feel even slightly bad about telling him where to stick it!"

Shinji smiled warmly at her flustered face. He kissed her on the nose.

"I love you. What the fuck would I do without you?"

"I don't know… but, I don't think we should dwell on that."

She leaned in to capture his lips once more.

Asuka and Shinji stepped out onto the balcony to watch the sun set. It was a beautiful sight to wach.

"I hope Rei's okay…" mused Shinji, feeling slightly guilty over leaving her in the office. Asuka nudged his elbow, put her finger to her lips and pointed to the wall seperating the next balcony over. Straining his ears, Shinji was able to make out the sound of subdued giggling – and the occasional contented sigh – of two people.

"I think she'll be just fine." Asuka whispered in reply.

My god, this could just evolve into a full fic on its own.

Comedy Omake #39 - Pre-Birthday Plans
My god, this could just evolve into a full fic on its own.
It might. It's almost at the point of being a spin-off...

In the meantime while I think about how to structure the party, here's a silly bit I thought of earlier, that I refuse to say if it's canon or not. :V

"Well, that was lovely, Nagisa-san!" Hikari gushed as the grey-haired boy lowered his bow. "You should try out for the school Music Club! I'm sure you'd shine there."

Nagisa's smile shone brightly on its own. "Thank you, Class Rep-san. I have given it some thought. Music is the highest achievement of Lilim culture, after all."

Hikari blinked at him. "Of what culture?"

Rei loomed behind Hikari, her eyes glowing alarmingly red. She held up a sheet of paper. "STOP FLIRTING WITH HER. SHE HAS A BOYFRIEND AND I WILL DESTROY YOU IF YOU MAKE TROUBLE. AND 'LILIM'? YOU STUPID FISH!"

"Uh..." Kaworu tried to make his brain work fast to cover that slip, but his body had become suddenly fascinated by Ayanami's appearance when angry again. "I mean... human culture. Sorry, I've been speaking German up until recently." He judged this a success by the way Ayanami's death glare dropped a notch.

"Oh, German? So you were at NERV-Berlin with Asuka?" the petite brunette asked.

He thought faster. "Ah... I didn't run into her while I was there. I was rather bottled up." He tried another smile, those seemed to distract her for some reason. "I didn't actually meet her face to face until I arrived here."

Hikari looked bedazzled again. "Oh my..."

Rei held up the paper again. The first two sentences were now underlined, as was the last. Twice.

Hikari rallied. "S-so why do you call her 'Miss Soryu', then?"

"Oh, it's just a little nod to us both having come here from Germany. I don't know her very well yet, but a little taste of Germany is something I can offer her."

"That's very nice of you, Nagisa-san," Hikari said with a smile. "So, you play the violin and piano, speak German, and are very ha-... kind! You're going to be very popular with the girls in class."

Kaworu looked at her, intrigued. "Why is that?"

Behind her, Rei facepalmed and held up the paper again. The last sentence was now underlined thrice.

"Cultured and handsome foreign students often attract plentiful attention, Nagisa-san," Rei said dryly, breaking her silence. She casually put the paper down on the table, face down. She had the feeling she'd need it again later. Frequently. "Though in your case, I wonder if you will know what to do."

"How should I respond properly, then?"

"Be like Kensuke," Rei said. "That would be a good start."

Kaworu looked puzzled. "I should... date as many girls as possible, then select two?"

Hikari giggled and put her hand over her mouth.

Rei tried to burn a hole in Kaworu's face with her glare. "No."

"But he di-"

"We will discuss it later," Rei said in the same tone of voice a judge would pronounce sentence on a major criminal. "For now, we will finalize preparations for Asuka's birthday party tomorrow. You will bring an appropriate gift if you wish to attend, Nagisa-san."

"A shame we didn't get to go shopping for presents together, Rei. I did find Asuka some nice video games," Hikari said, smiling. "I know you were still deciding. Did you figure out what to get her?"

Rei nodded, looking happier. "I am giving Asuka some lip gloss tomorrow."

Hikari looked confused. "Your best friend, and all you're getting her for her birthday is a tube of lip gloss?"

Rei stared at her. "...tube?"

I think Anno would approve.
This is not a compliment.

All these covers of Cruel Angel's Thesis, and still all I can think about is Shinji doing some 2CELLOS. But who would his fellow cello player be?
didn't the woman doing a cello cover a few pages back have a violin I'm her lap for the title card?

Since we're sharing our favorite versions of Zankoku na Tenshi no Teze, I'll throw some of mine in:
Normally, I'd start off with the San-Ningen Version/ Director's Edit Version II, but MoroseMobius got us covered with it, I'll skip to my next two choices,

The Successor to the Legendary OG Animetal Version: Animetal the Second

I think Anno would approve.
This is not a compliment.
Next, Eri Kawai's version (hauntingly beautiful rendition)

That choral version gave me chills. Good pick.

What, do you want everyone on Earth to die horribly?
Doubt we would feel much... A mild solar breeze, that's all.

How does she know what Asuka tastes like? :V
Rei isn't just a Social ninja...:ninja:

Rei: "Freshwater life not welcome."

Kaworu: :(

Pen-Pen: "Wark!"

Kaworu: "Laugh it up, damnable bird."

Pen-Pen: "Wark!"
Kaworu: I will Tang you, bird.

Misato: Pen says "Rei is a chatty sleepwalker and penguins eat fish. Sleep with one eye open, asshole." Pen-Pen, what did Rei say?

Pen-Pen: Wark!

Misato: Okay, not repeating that out loud
Okay this is better than what I had.

. I was rather bottled up." He
