Actually... Asuka "mellowing" out is easy to see. Hell, here, she has already. Considerably. And yeah, I think a happy relationship will do that.

As for Rei... I don't see her as becoming really "lively", but actually, I can see her picking up several eccentricities, like weird hobbies and interests. She never really had much of a socialization, so she will be a bit out of tune with what others like, and she basically has to develop a personality from the ground up. Also, she had lived as Gendo's toy long enough. She is know free to do and behave in what way ever she wants, and she knows that. And takes advantage of it. And hey, after all, she knows her loves will be with her whatever, so why fret about being too eccentric?

This is why my headcanon Rei is a closet heavy metal fan. One day, Shinji and Asuka open the door to her room, and it's just Rei in her underwear and a pair of wireless headphones, headbanging to Metallica and Megadeth. :V

I think Rei becoming a bit less introverted makes sense, though. I see her as growing up to be quiet and reserved but still having a sense of humour, and being quite capable of joining in with whatever wacky hijinks her friends and loved ones get up to.

Maybe Histories of obscure cultures and peoples? She wants everyone to remember her children, even the mysterious ones?
Edit: nah, that'd be more the trout's thing. If you cannot create, curate and preserve

    Rei stared at the little bundle that had been presented to her. It looked like the most fragile thing in the world.

    "Godmother?" She asked, incredulously.

    "Well duuuh, Rei," said Asuka, rolling her eyes. "Now go on and hold her."

    "Ah!" Rei started, "What? No! I couldn't possibly... I'll drop it!"

    "Don't be silly, Rei. Now hold still, we'll teach you how to hold her."

    "But-"

    "Just put your arm here..."

    "Asuka! No! I-"

    "And your other arm here..."

    "Shinji! You too? Stop it, both of you; I'm going to drop it!"

    "Just relax, Rei. And... now... voila! You're holding her!"

    "I... er... what?"

    Rei fought to keep her breathing in check as she rigidly kept her arms exactly as Asuka and Shinji had arranged them. She stared down at the tiny baby in her arms, not really knowing what to make of it. The baby stared back.

    Asuka and Shinji locked their arms together and fondly observed as the two most dear to them took each other in.

    "Rei Ayanami, meet Aki Soryu," said Asuka, fondly.

    Aki cooed a little and reached out her chubby little arms at Rei's face - falling far short. Rei risked moving her arms to bring Aki closer to her face. Finally, one of Aki's hands touched Rei's nose. Aki gargled in appretiation, making all sorts of indistinct, but cheerful, sounds.

    Rei sniffed the hand - mosly out of curiosity. Finally, a warm smile broke out across her own face.

    "Pleased to meet you, Aki."

    I would go with "trying to describe a rainbow at dawn to a blind man". It's so much more than just the colours and how they interact and the gleam and the feeling and... and you poor sod just can't understand :(

    Pretty much. When she stops to think about it, it will obscurely annoy Rei that the only other person in the world who has even the faintest idea what she's seeing is the stupid Rainbow Trout, and even his 'vision' is different from hers.

    Probably, but that's a very short list! The list of 'non-evil people who know anything about Metaphysical Biology' is pretty much just 'Prof. Fuyutsuki and Doctor Akagi', and they both work for the second most evil bastard in the world.

    Not really. It's like trying to hear your own voice; you automatically ignore it, since it's always there. That's a part of why Rei was surprised to hear Kaworu could see hers. She's used to not thinking about it.

    Yup. It's not colors or light, that's just the closest analog Rei can describe.

    Possibly because those would most often be WAFF stories, and everyone wants to see the Ultra-WAFF of Shinji wrapped completely around his little girl's finger. :)
