Asuka felt her eyes bug out in shock and grasped reflexively for Shinji's hand. By the strength of his return grip, he was at least equally shocked.
"Rei, what the HELL?!?"
Rei smiled at them, fondly but sadly, as if--
"The means to restore your mothers now lies within my grasp."
Asuka's mind ground to a halt. She was faintly aware of Gendo, still doubled over around his severed wrist, surging partially upright with an expression that might have actually made her feel something other than homicidal contempt for him.
Nagisa spoke for the first time, very softly. "This is an ill-advised plan, Ayanami."
"Scilence, Adamite," Rei said firmly, but sounding almost... friendly? What? There was something wrong here, but Asuka was too saturated to come to grips with it.
"Rei," Shinji quavered, hope-against-hope in his voice. "Are you sure?"
"Yes," Rei replied, smiling beatifically at them both. "It will not take long."
And with that, Rei floated up into the air, towards the impaled form of Lilith. Asuka found herself fighting a growing sense of unease as Rei hung before the ancient Progentitor, almost seeming to... commune... with it, in utter silence. "Nagisa," she started to say, "what did you mea--"
The sound as Rei was taken into Lilith like a fly being swallowed by a toad would haunt Asuka's nightmares forever.
"I meant," Nagisa said soberly as reality began to melt around them, "that her plan, while workable, would carry a high price. Which she intended to take soley upon herself." He turned from his contemplation of Lilith to eye Shinji and Asuka speculatively. "I believed that you would find the exchange... inequitable. But she was determined."
Because doing "A far, far better thing" is something I could easily see Rei convincing herself of, as long as she believed that it would make her loves happy. Her sense of self is (at this point in A&T) probably somewhere on a par with Shirou Emiya's....

All joking aside it would be typical of NERV if - as Tokyo-3 is a company town - everyone were paid in company scrip.

That doesn't sound all that likely, considering the preview for 4.0 at the end of the third movie. Whether you're actually going to use the material shown in the trailer or pull another 3.33, it doesn't make any sense to offer any sneak peeks at what's supposed to come if you're not going to make a fourth movie in the first place.
