I was trying to be fair and promote friendship amongst all of them, and kept actively suppressing the urge to go full-steam-ahead! on pure AsuShin. This is what I get for being fair.
OTOH, it's been a wild ride, and if Rei ends up seeing keeping humanity as is and living with Shinji and her friends as the way to go, it's still a win. The goal is 'Keep Shinji sane, beat the Angels, stop SEELE'. I think we're doing pretty good on that. A/S or A/S/+ is my happy end, but not at all required for that. So while I'll encourage Asuka, I'm reluctantly willing to admit that ending things with her and Shinji together isn't required.

So, their being together in the end is still up in the air?
That makes me nervous, but at the same time, at least we don't know exactly what's in store for our heroes in the end.
I'm personally hoping for A/S to be the ultimate result. Not knowing for sure if it will happen will make it that much sweeter if it does happen

He's talking about the 'Shinji Ikari Raising Project', a quest running in these forums. There are currently some romance plot points going through that one.
The S/A scenario is pretty much set in stone as far as this story is concerned.
