So far the best Dad in anime I have yet to see is the one in the Catgirl Nuku Nuku OVA, i mean he's not a paragon, but he refuses to tollerate harmful stuff for his son, TRIES to make things work even in highly unconventional ways, AND steps up to be a dad to the cyborg cat(girl) he created.
Admitedly, him going the gendo route would be terrifying.
What I am taking away from this is we need a fanfic where he is SHinji's mentor and Shinji arrives in Tokyo 3 with his cyborg sister in tow to look out for him, who suffers no Asuka sass, gets on with Misato and can out-drink her, keeps trying to make Rei laugh with silly faces just because, and probably gets away with WAY more than she should because Dr Akagi has a weakspot for cats (and possibly starts making her 'upgrades' and 'external armour packs' till she can takle an angel fairly well solo]

I'm surprised no one's written any crossovers between those two franchises. They would sort of compliment one another, not just because both featured more than a few of the same cast members in their ADV dubs.

Not to mention the potential fun of Penpen and Nukunuku fighting over feeesh for breakfast!

He sort of did a while after the first time. The second time he decided to take revenge on humanity. Speaking of, would that be similar to how Gendo is willing to burn the world to the ground to get Yui back?
It's been a while since I watched Castlevania, but I got the impression that after his initial revenger on the city that killed her, Drac became apathetic to the whole thing, and was only continuing because his generals were so gung-ho. Hell, maybe I'm imagining it, but I thought Alucard even had a realization towards the end that the whole thing was "part revenge/part suicide attempt", with the mindset of "Either i kill all the humans, or the humans find a way to kill me. Either way, I win." Correct me if I'm wrong, otherwise ignore me. I'm scared of a derail ban.

He got more apathetic about it, but he still insisted it had to happen. He just didn't care how it happened.

He basically fell into depression, and didn't care much of what was happening, or why. He just wanted humanity's end, in one way or another, and then he would follow them shortly afterwards.

His generals(with the exception of Issac) actually didn't want humanity's eradication; Hector just wanted humanity penned and controlled, and the vampires didn't want to lose their primary food source. It's actually one of the few things Dracula fought against his generals about after he fell into depression. It's one of the few times we see him get worked up at all, and not just tiredly sitting in his chair. He snaps at them when they bring up the food source problem, stating that they'll still have animals.

Alucard isn't wrong in saying the whole thing is "history's longest suicide note", but Dracula did specifically want the end of humanity.

Back on track, you know what the hardest thing about committing to reading the ENTIRE 2,000+ page thread of this fic?

Forcing myself to not reply to dozens, if not hundreds, of 7-8 year old posts.

Actually, I am going to necro-comment on ONE. Because this one is just too good not to.

This is SV. It doesn't have the hardware problems that required threads on SB to be capped. There are Quest threads here that are at nearly 2000 pages. A&T isn't even that long, relatively speaking.

So would you say this aged like wine or vinegar? =D

To modify my earlier question, is what Gendo trying to do in Advice and trust have any similarity to what you described?

To modify my earlier question, is what Gendo trying to do in Advice and trust have any similarity to what you described?

A comparison with Gendo is admittedly why I brought the idea up in the first place, but I don't actually think they're that similar.

Gendo's goal isn't the destruction of the world or humanity. His goal is to get his wife back. He doesn't care if his methods result in the end of the world, but ending the world isn't what he's trying to do.

He's also a focused and driven man. He's broken, but he's very, VERY motivated. He does nothing but work towards accomplishing his goal. Reuniting with his wife is everything.

He has hope. He only has one hope(taking control of Instrumentality and using it to restore Yui), but he has hope.

Dracula is, in many ways, the opposite of all of that. His goal is destruction. He wants revenge on the world that stole his wife from him. He doesn't think for a second that Lisa can be brought back, and even though he does wind up reuniting with her, I don't think he ever believed that was possible before he died.

Gendo has hope, but Dracula is hopeless. He has nothing left, and all he wants is to 1) eradicate humanity, and 2) die. He's also completely apathetic, where Gendo is driven. He can barely bring himself to bother with doing anything, because he has no hope.

That said, I actually think they're very similar people, and if their situations were comparable, they'd react very similarly. I think the differences between them stem from the differences in what they face.

Gendo has hope he can get his wife back. Dracula doesn't.

Put Gendo in a scenario where trustimg humanity resulted in Yui's death, and I can absolutely see him both lashing out at humanity and not wanting to live.

Put Dracula in a scenario where Lisa is gone, but can be recovered, and I believe he'd stop at nothing to do so.

All of this talk of Dracula immediately has me thinking of Soma and now I can't help but wonder how Shinji would feel if put in a similar situation as Soma and Alucard: seeing his dad reincarnated (along with his mom? Because admittedly Mina also being a reincarnation is a headcanon) and actually be a nice person.

I thought up some ideas to add to that.

  • Gendo would be reborn into a caring family which would result in a more heathy upbringing for him.
  • There would be Seele remnants/successors to Seele that would attempt their own assimilation plot.
  • Gendo would learn who he used to be and be horrified at what a monster he was, as well as what he may become.
  • Might result in him going the opposite extreme, not connecting to anyone.

...You know i watched both series and...well am i the only one to think that Dracula was better off emotionally even in his post "dead-wife" state then Gendo? I mean yeah both were trying to end the world, but while Dracula was actively trying to end the world he knew what he was doing, was able of stopping himself before he crossed a line, and realized he was crossing a line because of his love for both his wive and son. Gendo on the other hand can't seem to grasp the concept that maybe Yui wouldn't want to live in a world where humanity is dead, maybe even he son as well, and doesn't seem to actually consider what she wants.

The ugly influence of grief and obsession, unfortunately. By this point, getting the love of his life back is all that Gendo Ikari has left. He's pretty much dead inside otherwise, and if his efforts are rendered futile I imagine he'd have no reason not to put a gun to his head. It's Yui back, or everything he's done for over a decade and billions dead will have been MEANINGLESS.

EDIT: I distinctly recall someone said Shinji's at just as big a risk of becoming as obsessive as Gendo if Asuka ends up dying. Something about: "Going straight past the 'Whiny Emo-Anakin Skywalker' phase and going straight to 'Darth Vader with a hangover and a toothache' levels of murderously pissed off."

Our Glorious Overlord made that comment somewhere in the sub-100s page range. I know, I just read it. ^ - ^

That was the alternate ending of the classic fic "The One I Love Is...", where Asuka didn't awaken from her coma. It's a chiller, which makes me all the happier I prefer the good ending.

I'm generally loathe to make predictions, and I doubt things will play out as I describe them here, but here's my take on what (loosely) could happen next:

Kaworu makes his way down to where Rei IV called for him. But before he rendezvous with her, he notices something off. He can hear her Song before he even sees her, and notices that her Song, while familiar, seems different. Like the missing pieces in place of the one he knows. Confused but still eager to see her, he continues onwards. He meets up with her, and she greets him, then lashes out with her AT-Field.

Already somewhat on guard, he raises his own AT-Field in defense, asking why she's attacking him. She replies that he's an Angel, and she must kill Angels. Kaworu pleads with her, asking what's happening, but she just repeats that she has to kill him. Deeply hurt and confused by the apparent betrayal, Kaworu's Angelic side starts to take over. Losing ground as he tries to restrain himself, he pleads with Rei to stop, asking if she remembers everything they've been through up to that point. She only replies that he needs to die. Heartbroken and desperate, he lets Tabris take over, and lashes out. Rei IV is left dead, as Kaworu stands over her. Filled with grief, he makes no attempt to resist as Tabris begins to guide him to his destiny.

Furious at Rei IV's failure, Gendo immediately calls on Asuka and Hikari to prepare for engagement, claiming the 17th Angel is active and heading to the Geofort's lowest levels. Hikari responds in the affirmative, if nervously, but Asuka is skeptical. She demands to know where Rei and Misato are. Gendo makes up an excuse about where Misato is, and claims that Rei is dead, killed by Kaworu. Asuka calls him a liar, but rather than threaten to punish her, he has the security footage of Kaworu killing "Rei" shown on her Eva's HUD. Furious about this perceived betrayal, Asuka and Hikari spring into action with their Evas.

As Kaworu is making his way down to Lilith's chamber, he internally laments that it's come to this, how despite all the differences from the other timelines, it ends up the same way again, with him going to initiate Third Impact, and everyone trying to stop him. While internally reminiscing about how much he enjoyed his time, he begins to hear a familiar Song, faint and growing fainter, but one he immediately recognizes. As he begins passing by Akagi's lab, he sees the original Rei's Song from within. Confused, and suddenly hopeful, he desperately wrests control of his body back from Tabris, staggeringly moving away from Lilith and towards the Song. He finds himself in front of the LCL cylinder with an unconscious Rei laying inside. Not sure what's happening, but relieved to see her, he smashes the cylinder with his AT-Field, sending glass and Tang everywhere. Watching as Rei's fading Song starts regaining strength, he walks over and cradles her.

Rei hazily wakes up to find herself being held by Kaworu, who's shaking so hard she imagines he's going to vibrate out of his skin. She says his name, to which he pulls back to look at her with tears in his eyes. She asks him what he's doing there, to which Kaworu shakily explains what happened. As she listens, Rei angrily notes that Gendo must have had another clone hidden away, and he must have used her soul fragment from the destroyed Unit-00.

Despite being somewhat wobbly from what Fuyutsuki had tried to do to her, she gets to her feet and grabs her clothes. Kaworu asks what they should do next, to which Rei replies they need to head to Lilith's chamber. Kaworu is shocked by this, as he had just used all his strength to avoid going there, and he was still at risk of starting an Impact. Rei replies that Gendo is making his move, and to have any hope of stopping him, and SEELE, they need to silence his Call. Kaworu protests that he's still reeling from seeing her die by his hand, but Rei simply kisses him, reassuring him that she'll be there with him. Somewhat relieved from her kiss, he agrees to follow her. The two then head out of the lab.

They try the elevator but it doesn't respond. Rei figures that NERV must have shut it down to hinder their movement. She then uses her AT-Field to pry the doors open to the shaft. Looking at Kaworu, she asks if he can use his AT-Field to float them down safely. When Kaworu says he's not sure, given his still shaken state of mind, Rei then proposes he can carry her bridal style, hoping the arousal will keep his Call silent. While taken aback be this, Kaworu nervously agrees. Taking Rei in his arms, he begins slowly descending down the shaft, with Rei offering words of comfort the whole way down.

As the two of them near the bottom of the shaft, they notice that Asuka, Hikari, and their respective Evas are waiting in front of the bottom set of doors. Rei comments that Asuka's light suggests that she's especially angry. Kaworu replies that Asuka probably thinks he killed Rei. Figuring Asuka might think he's carrying her corpse in their current arrangement, Rei tells him to let her down on her feet as they reach the bottom so she can stand in front of him. He obliges, and then uses his AT-Field to pry the doors open. As Rei steps out, Unit-02 launches an AT-Field covered punch, only to pull back when Asuka sees it's Rei. Shocked but relieved that her friend is seemingly alive and well, Asuka asks what's happening.

As Rei tries to explain, Gendo interrupts them, ordering the two Pilots to kill the 17th Angel. Asuka, predictably, ignores him and again asks Rei to explain things. Gendo reminds her that he's given her a direct order, to which Asuka asks why she should listen to him since he clearly lied about Rei being dead. Gendo replies that he is the Commander of NERV, that he also thought Rei was dead (technically true), and Kaworu is still an Angel and needs to be eliminated. Asuka again refuses, to which Gendo orders her Eva be deactivated, though Asuka's mother prevents any signals from going through, forcing command to wait for her batteries to drain. He turns his attention to Hikari, ordering her to kill Kaworu. Asuka counters and insists that she wait and listen to what Rei has to say. Gendo again warns about the consequences of insubordination, and insists that Tabris will destroy the world if he continues to live. Confused, conflicted, and overwhelmed, Hikari asks her mother what she should do. Having spoken with Kaworu previously, and believing him to be a good person, Hanako suggests that they should hear Rei out. When Gendo starts threatening Hikari again, her mother blocks the connection to the command center.

Knowing that Asuka's batteries are running out, Rei hastily explains that the Rei they saw die was an emergency backup clone that Gendo had stashed away. When Hikari asks about why Rei has clones, Asuka tells her not to worry about it, and she'll fill her in later. Rei then explains that she and Kaworu need to get to Lilith so she can fix him. When Hikari asks how that'll work, Rei says it's complicated, but if it works, it'll make it so that he doesn't feel compelled to destroy the world. Hikari asks if it will control his "other side" (something her mother suggested based on her conversation with Kaworu), which Rei confirms.

While this is going on, Gendo and Fuyutsuki are quietly conversing, wondering what Rei hopes to accomplish. Gendo comments that she's clearly in league with Misato and the others. As they listen to the technicians wondering why the Evas won't respond to their command signals, Fuyutsuki silently wonders if the spirits within the Eva Cores are the cause, and begins to think that what Misato said about talking to the souls may be true. When he asks Gendo about this, the Commander responds that they'll get their answers soon enough. Fuyutsuki then muses that he knows exactly what Gendo is thinking about. Gendo then calls the Section 2 head and orders him to be ready to arrest the four Pilots and bring them to his office. He also orders that Misato, Akagi, Kaji, and Shinji be brought as well.

After hearing Rei's explanation, and despite being worried about what awaits her and the others afterwards, Hikari agrees to help her friends. Asuka laments that her power is about to go out, so she asks Hikari to do what Rei says. Rei asks Hikari to hold her and Kaworu together in her hands and carry them over to the white giant, much to the horror and confusion of the command squad. Hikari spreads her Eva's hands out so Rei and Kaworu can stand on top of them, lifts them up, and carries them both over to Lilith. As they get closer to the progenitor, Kaworu becomes increasingly agitated, so Rei encourages him to hold her close. She asks Hikari to hold them close enough to Lilith for Rei to touch her, which Hikari complies with. Rei instructs Kaworu to open his plugsuit/remove his top (I'm not sure what he's wearing at this point). He shakily complies, and Rei reaches out to Lilith. Using her AT-Field, she extracts a small globule of material from Lilith, then turns and tells Kaworu to loosen his AT-Field, which he does. Rei then proceeds to push the globule into Kaworu's now permeable chest, while a grossed out Hikari turns her head away. After a few seconds, Rei extracts her hand, and Kaworu falls limp in her arms. She calls his name several times, then calls him a stupid fish, at which point he jerks back up with a gasp. She then asks how he feels, to which he replies that it feels "so quiet." He confirms happily that the incessant voice in his head has gone silent. The two hybrids share a joyous embrace. Kaworu than asks what happens next, to which Rei responds that they need to face the Commander.

I'll fill in the rest later, but it's late for me and I have work tomorrow. Until then.

As she listens, Rei angrily notes that Gendo must have had another clone hidden away, and he must have used her soul fragment from the destroyed Unit-00.

Still reading this, and it's pretty interesting, but I'm pretty sure it's been explicitly stated that Rei III has Rei I's soul fragment. Rei I and II both went back to Lilith after Armisael, and Rei III is (I believe) Lilith's complete soul.

That's why Rei III has Rei I's memories of being strangled by Naoko.

That's one of the things I find so fascinating about Rei IV. I'm not sure how she can be anything but a decanted blank slate.

She would've had to have been one of the clones in the Reiquarium before that got blown up. Those clones don't have souls or Rei's memories from the brain scan.

I don't think it's possible Rei IV has received the brain dump. First of all, I'm not certain Gendo knows how to operate that machine.

Second of all, he was already mistrusting of Rei. The brain scans were stopped in the first place because he was suspicious of Rei, and there doesn't seem to be any way to revert to a previous backup. He already didn't trust the current Rei to be backed up, and even the most recent backup was already disloyal. Even if he knew how, he wouldn't have put that brain scan into Rei IV.

Besides memories, there's also the matter of the soul. I'm not sure Rei IV can even have a piece of Lilith's soul. Which begs the question of what she actually has. Maybe Gendo gave her a part of it the moment he took the clone from the Reiquarium, and Rei III/Lilith just hasn't realized it's missing?

That's not correct. Lilith's soul is still fragmented. After the battle with Armisael, Akagi recovered Rei's charred corpse and brought it to her lab. She then (presumably) used viable remaining pieces from Rei's clone bodies to construct a new body for Rei III, uploading her most recent brain scan. She also presumably put the same fragment of Lilith's soul from Rei II into Rei III. Also, the reason she has Rei I's memories of being strangled by Naoko is because when she (as Rei II) tried Synching with Unit-00 after her overdose, she was exposed to her original counterpart's memories. She didn't necessarily "inherit" them.

She would've had to have been one of the clones in the Reiquarium before that got blown up. Those clones don't have souls or Rei's memories from the brain scan.

The implication given from previous chapters is that Gendo had a Rei clone in a tank separate from the Reiquarium. And yes, they don't have souls or memories until they are activated.

I don't think it's possible Rei IV has received the brain dump. First of all, I'm not certain Gendo knows how to operate that machine.

She didn't receive the brain download. Gendo activated Rei IV without any sort of brain alterations. She's effectively what Rei II started off as with no memories. Also, why wouldn't Gendo know how to operate the machine? He, along with Fuyutsuki and Ritsuko's mother, presumably designed and built it. And Akagi admitted that the two Commanders were the ones who activated Rei II when they showed her how it worked.

Distrust had nothing to do with why the brain scans stopped. Her scans were supposed to occur quarter-annually. She wasn't scheduled for another one before SEELE destroyed the Reiquarium. But yes, as I said, he didn't download Rei's most recent scan into Rei IV, since he wanted her to be a blank slate that he could tightly control.

She has the missing soul fragment from Unit-00. If she had no soul at all, she'd be nothing but a comatose body. And unless and until she encounters or learns of her doppelgänger, Rei III has no reason to suspect anything noteworthy happened to her missing soul fragment. She probably assumed it returned to the Door of Guf, if she thought about it at all.
