Only partway through this one, but Asuka and Mari's bicking has made me laugh pretty hard.

Glad to hear it :D
Dude I had a lot of fun with just Mari's interaction with it all, she's truly third wheeling this entire thing from an outsiders perspective!
Amazing how being an Evangelion pilot kills any inhibitions you may have :V

They'll also probably be banging their heads against a wall somewhat when they see how dense Shinji is to how much Asuka actually kinda likes him.

It'll probably be balanced out by Shinji trying to deck Gendo, though.

"Gods I always wanted to do that..."

"Shinji I think everyone in this room has wanted to do that."

"Oh I would've done a lot worse than that!"
And on the density aspect remember in A&T/Chronicles it took Asuka kissing him and some twist of fate to convince Shinji that she liked him!

Because of all this, Shinji respects Asuka, and consider her a close friend (close enough to get Rei jealous) but that's it. This ship has sailed already. Shinji de facto asked out (or as close as you can get in Eva) Rei with his idea to hang out in the park.

Or in other words: Shinji simply friend-zoned Asuka.
Yes, I know that's can be inconceivable for some, but it's the truth.

I mean given what happened in the anime, perhaps the friend-zone is preferable... :V
It's definitely gonna be interesting to see the changes made in the manga, having not read it myself (and only knowing a few key details... like the cat).

I know its convenient, BG, but you really ought to stop using the penguin to eavesdrop. Must be kind of disorienting for the poor bird.

Why do you think they drink so much? :V

Advice and Trust is going to be a bit of a whiplash moment, huh?

"Man that kiss was so good wasn't it?!"

A long beat.

"Ah shit now comes all the trauma huh..."

Yeah, this is one of the many, many reasons I write Rebuild off as bad fanfic of Eva. DJ Kroft had better written shipping and earned it more. And he didn't.

It does seem like Anno did that to spite people, huh.
Ah well, I had a lot of fun watching it, mainly because I watched it with Chronicles in mind and immediately had a lot of pearlers in it. Like the first thing that went through my mind when I realised they were going for the Asuken route was Asuka's absolute horror in seeing it :V

Ooh yeah I'm gonna save that for later!

Rei and Shinji definitely were closer than they were in the anime, but it wasn't Rei he was so desperate to save that it triggered Third Impact. Rei got nicely friend-zoned, but she was definitely a friend, and not more.

One of the things I do recall from the manga is Shinji actually saved Asuka from the MPs at the end of it, so that still implies to me they were close.
And lets be honest, it would've taken a miracle to have Shinji be that open towards that sort of relationship anyway, with how closed off he was to start and how things progressed.

Well, I've said this before and I'll say it again, I personally just see the Rebuilds (and Anime) as little more than raw materials for fanfics.

Given the myriad of portrayals and origins of Mari in a lot of those fanfics, you make a good point.
Well, I personally go with the Nobody Dies version and say that she's Asuka's half-sister.

I also say that unlike with Asuka, her mom was successful in drugging her to the gills so she doesn't have to put up with the problems that come with raising a child, I know, parenting at it's finest.
Eventually though, what was happening came to light, either by her mom giving her too much of whatever she was drugging her with (now how that happens when she's supposed to work at a hospital is beyond me, maybe she's unfamiliar with things you get prescribed by a psychologist), and she OD'd at school, or something else happened. Either way, the fact that Mari was being given things that you give to people with manic episodes and in dosages that leave her barely able to think came to light, and her parents lost ALL custody of her (and her mom lost her medical license, and was probably arrested for both child abuse and medical malpractice). She's now happily adopted by the British-Japanese Makinami family.

Well, I remember reading the manga and seeing quite some things I'm sure will shock the characters in Chronicles, to start with Shinji's mental state right at the beginning. There is also, of course, Kaji's backstory in the manga which is as tragic as expected, and the bonus chapter will certainly throw them a very unexpected curve ball...

I also remember that some of the pages were colored, which revealed that Shinji's eyes in the manga are brown instead of blue, so if you can get the colored versions, @BG_Character_592 , they can comment on those things too, though it won't really add much.

My personal preferences are the ones in the following tales...

-Obviously, "Superwomen of EVA: American Dream" (in which she becomes the new Captain America) and "Superwomen of EVA 2: The Ultimate Rush" (in which she becomes the new Flash).

-The one seen in "Transposed", who has something of a more...otherworldly background.

-The one present in the multi-part saga of "The Blue Rose".

-The one seen in "An Insider's Look", with a more hard-hitting backstory.

-The one appearing in the "Apotheosis Echo" saga, where a very unique origin was provided.

-And the one present (if just for a brief appearance) in the more comedic saga of "The Reprint and Repackaging of Evangelion".

You always have time to pet the goose.

But only if the goose says it's okay, which rarely happens. Trixie had a cheat-code by being Canadian.

the best way to go about it is never having a Dodge in the first place

Oi! The Grand Caravan is an absolute tank, and pretty much the perfect truck, and you will respect it. The fact that it's a mini-van is irrelevant, since it's only pretending to be a mini-van

"That is true. I think."

"Why couldn't we get that one either!" Another bang on the desk.

"Do you really want to have that work sent over, if it does follow our lives?"

"I mean…" Asuka thought about it for a while.

All the while Rei and Kaworu (and Mari for that matter) vacantly stared at her.

"…Aye, fair enough."
I do believe this is a relevant scene:

Mari gave Asuka her best Chilli death stare.
One sec...

...okay, that's hilarious.

A: "I'm glad he got shot dead. Bastard didn't deserve anything better."
Unless of course what ends up happening in A&T is Yui inhabiting ReiQ, telling Gendo precisely what she thinks, and then shoots him with his own gun. In the penis.

S: "In fairness we don't really have a translation of that kind of arrangement when it comes to marriage… though I'm pretty sure we do have something separate when it comes to international marriages, which this might fall under."

Rei: "eh, just say it was in Indonesia - polygamy was legal there pre-impact"

"Kaworu can tell you, the Solenoid is a path to many things some would consider… unnatural."
If Star Wars was next on the list, this line would have been even funnier.

"Entity is due west of us, tracking towards the eastern seaboard. It will be due in the gulf within an hour and will make it to the bay in three. Maybe less.

"…We must not let the entity make landfall in Boston. We are not Tokyo-3, this city is not a fortress. We fight them in the bay."

"We are going to channel the entity thought the Nantasket Roads, down to Quincy. This is our designated kill corridor; shallow waters and unoccupied emplacement filled land."

I am very confused... where is MassaNERVsetts located in relation to Boston? Because if The Entity was west of Boston, it would already be on land. Landfall from water in that direction would be on Lake Erie.

The Evangelion would return to base. "Welcome to the world, Starlight."
And so! Life was created because love and stuff

his anisocoric eyes staring
I learnt something new with this word... and also that it affected Bowie, something I literally never noticed before.

I've noticed that most, if not all instances of the word three has been in bold - is there a particular reason for that?

Mah it's all a tumbleweed at this point

It is a common maxim on the internet: if it exists there is porn of it.

Okay, who told Rei about Rule 34?

They were going to need a lot more beer for this one.

Fuck beer they're going to need scotch for this

Or in other words: Shinji simply friend-zoned Asuka.
Yes, I know that's can be inconceivable for some, but it's the truth.

Huh.... perhaps the timing of this material appearing will influence the weeds to tumble some more...

The Dodge Concorde does exist in Chronicles mind you, which came about when some Chrysler executives snorted a line of coke and decided to throw a 7.6 litre Hemi engine in a Grand Caravan :D
Yes if you thought the Hemi wasn't OTT enough, they made it bigger and badder and it's not even legal in several states, including Massachusetts! But there's a reason why most of Missouri's income is from out of state registrations :V
Call it Mari's bias for being a Ford gal!

One sec...

To be fair it is a warranted one :V
Maybe I'll add Bluey to the voting list out of the curiosity of seeing how it goes.

One can only dream :V

Oop I need to correct that, thanks for catching that!
Look I live on the west coast of Australia, so when I think of the direction of the ocean that's what I think! :V
And if you wanna know where NERV-Massachusetts is located, it's located in Cambridge near to the Charles river. They share the Magi with MIT so it's safe to say they are located close to that campus.

Well the hidden message in the afterword of the last chapter was not picked up on by people so I thought to make it more obvious this time around :p
And as for the reasons for the secret message... well, if I elaborate on a mystery it doesn't become a mystery anymore does it? :D

Hey, if it works :V
Sharing the love!

Okay, who told Rei about Rule 34?

Curious minds and the Internet rarely mix well :V
Well, the curious minds of Rei and Kaworu both I suppose, and both of the definitely had been curious about that side of things.
And lets be honest they probably expected that thing of them ever since the Laserdiscs :p

Fuck beer they're going to need scotch for this

They're gonna be begging Ritsuko to make up that Romulan Ale :V

Huh.... perhaps the timing of this material appearing will influence the weeds to tumble some more...

Well it's probably gonna traumatise them enough to tangle up with each other, I'd think :V

Eh, I personally don't think it was that traumatizing. Sure, some things are bad, but to me they felt more spread out, so it didn't hit me as hard as the anime.

Then again, I suppose it could be because the last chapter (and bonus chapter) took like 20 years to be written and published, so that may have lessened the impact, but I remember that even when it was been published regularly, it didn't feel, to me, like they were in an endless downwards spiral to depression and inevitable destruction.

As far as I remember, even though things got tough, the general impression I had was that they could still turn around and win somehow, and it felt more likely then the anime. And the ending was certainly hopeful too.

Honestly, even as controversial as it is being with Mari, it's cool that Shinji gets a happy ending. I mean, if the project had gone exactly as it is said it was going to end, the movies (and technically the franchise, although Anno did said he hopes other dudes take up the director baton "Gundam"-style) would have ended with a big "everybody gets a happy ending but Shinji" moment.

Ok, sure, Shinji and Gendo being locked in a duel for all eternity would have been an interesting "Gurren Lagann"-style ending, but if you don't like it, then would definitely will make your teeth grind. Also kinds of reminds me of STAS and Captain America and Red Skull being locked in a duel on Limbo.

I have a question in regards to Advice and trust. Would this quote from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 work as a villainous breakdown for Gendo?

High Evolutionary: You thought you could escape me? No! You think you have some worth in and of yourself without me?! NO! YOU'RE AN ABOMINATION! NOTHING MORE THAN A STEP ON MY PATH, YOU FREAKISH LITTLE MONSTER! HOW DARE YOU THINK YOU ARE MORE, 8! 9! P! 1! 3?!?!?!

I don't know that it would go exactly like that. I don't believe Gendo just hates Shinji on principle or considers him beneath him, but he'd be extremely frustrated that Shinji simply refuses to ascribe to the same cynical, obsessive worldview that Gendo does. He simply can't understand how Shinji could go on and actually want to live when he can't without Yui. So yeah, he's pissed because Shinji's actually more well-adjusted than he is.

I didn't realize that would apply quite well to Shinji. I was thinking more about Rei when I brought this up.

Pretty much this. A&TGendo wouldn't have a loud, angry breakdown. That's not his way. He'd have this frustration and bitterness, but not RAAAAAR!

Oh, and I've been nominated to the SV Council! Everyone go vote (for me) and I'll have another update up!

Consider it done.

Shifting gears, in light of the recent sad news for fans of a certain musician, answer me this, folks--

Would Misato qualify to be a Parrothead?

Dosing curves for kids are not the same as dosing curves for adults, so if she wasn't in pediatrics...
You've got a good point. She also may have never done anything with any medication that wasn't over-the-counter before.

Well, in regards to the Gendo for one of my own things, Project Resurrection/Resurrection of Evangelion (a rewrite of the Rebuilds with a complete overhaul for Rebuild 3 and onwards), I personally can't exactly make him as well-developed as a character as he is in this or Going Another Way, where we clearly saw that underneath everything he was completely broken inside and clinging to some black-and-white worldview where Yui would be completely understanding that all the things he did was necessary, and would be proud to be married to a man who thinks so highly of her (and guess what? When she gained contact with the outside world, the first thing she did was RIP GENDO A NEW ONE). So, I instead go with him being a Rare Male Yandere, one who hates his own son because he sees him as competition for Yui's love, which he sees as his and his alone. In short, a total Hate-sink who's defeat would be something that people would cheer for.

In this case, instead of Kaworu activating a bomb around his neck (Misato's group, in this case called GIEST, doesn't use on people, canisters of C4 are fine though) took one that was previously gutted, stuffed at least a heart monitor, oximeter, possibly other Bio-med sensors, and a Search and Rescue transponder into it and THEN put that on Shinji), Gendo makes contact and tells Shinji that what's happening at the moment (Unit-13 is gearing up to finish what Unit-01 started) is EXACTLY what he was planning to happen, and then tells him "Now at the end of the world, I can finally say, I ALWAYS HATED YOU!!!" He then proceeds to spend the next few minutes or so going on about what he sees Shinji as, also if there was a com window, he would actually have taken off his visor and looked Shinji eye to cold, hateful eye, before finally DISOWNING HIM. Then again, he never saw him as his son. This just makes it official. Right after that he says "Now, be a good pilot, AND DIE WITH THIS PLANET!!!" Then he cuts the coms off.

Yeah, this version of Gendo is a LOT more evil, and cruel, than the one in Advice and Trust OR canon. Then again, I can either make him a good guy (like with Angel's Flight, an Evangelion, DitFRANXX Ace Combat fusion fic where the pilots are flying superplanes, or helicopters in the case of the Nines, now known as Hoplite Squadron), in which he's a lot like the Gendo from Nobody Dies, not the best at affection, but he does love his family (Rei and Kyu included, they still came out of tubes, although in this case it was so Yui wouldn't have to deal with childbirth, and any potential problems when giving birth, maybe Shinji was unhealthy when born, or was premature). Or I can make him a bad guy (and a REALLY bad one at that). There's no real in-between.

Pretty much this. A&TGendo wouldn't have a loud, angry breakdown. That's not his way. He'd have this frustration and bitterness, but not RAAAAAR!
So he would simply be be angrily asking Shinji WHY he can keep going in life when his own father can't without the woman he loves.
