Congratulations!

Complementary torches and pitchforks are just through there.
And I must ask, WHAT THE BLOODY F**K WERE ALL THE GOOD GUYS EXCEPT SHINJI SMOKING TO THINK THAT SHINJI WAS SOMEHOW BEHIND THIS WHOLE MESS, OR USE HIM AS A SCAPEGOAT, COMPLETE WITH THE SCORN AND HATE tm WHEN THEY COULD JUST AS EASILY SAY THAT UNIT-01, THE F**KING BIOMECHANICAL SUPERWEAPON WITH A BLOODTHIRSTY PSYCHOPATHIC PERSONALITY, HAD GONE BERSERK AND MADE THIS MESS ITSELF?!?!?

(This is implying that Unit-01 has a mind of it's own and it's not just Yui showing what a woman's scorn looks like.)

Oh, I only broke Asuka into a million pieces writing a continuation for Toppling the Wall of Jericho.

Turns out she doesn't use Shinji as a crutch, but as glue.

And writing herself, she is.
In my version of Asuka's revenge, I had her kill some whoremongers and pimps who tormented her in the A-Series. And she and Shinji are each other's glue.

This is the stupidest fucking sentence that I've read in a very long time and it kind of hurts that it's in one of my favorite fanfics ever.

All you have to do to beat an Eva is pull the umbilical and wait five minutes.

So I'm going to assume Kaji is blatantly lying to try to make Shinji feel better and carry on.

They uh, have to get past the AT field to do that though. Just a thought. And at any rate EoE isn't gonna go like it did in the series.

Easiest way to do that is by changing Shinji's upbringing through his Sensei.
That's the core of my story idea. I want to write a crossover story where Shinji is adopted by an older couple who raise him like he was their own. But the adoption comes with conditions.

Without altering the whole thing or the surrounding characters you would have to mold him into a cross of the NGE version and some of Asuka aspects (well minus all her issues obviously).

There were some fics that did that but they were bad or either dead after a couple of chapters. FF.net is a graveyard for those.
You would have to combine hard pragmatism to make him withstand the ordeal of being a pilot (and all the "unfair" aspects of it) with his kindness. That however would dampen the latter slightly in regards to some things.

This pragmatism could lead to ruthlesness you need so he would kill all the Angels without remorse or much thought wasted on the fact that he must do it.

Beauty and the Beast added the hero complex to him which lead to a behaviour that goes into a similar direction.

However there is a greater problem arising: He would have to fully be aware of the circumstance that humans are not perfect and the world they inhabit isn't either.

Well, it isn't so much a hero complex but more so he's fighting to protect those he cares about. Especially since his guardian was required to accept a commission with NERVE and is there in Central Dogma giving him and the other pilots tactical advice. The rest of his adoptive family wouldn't be in Japan, but he knows what Third Impact will cause. And believe me, by the time he gets that letter from Gendo, he's already aware that the world is full of evil people, and the world ain't quite what it seems. The family he has in this story aren't the first ones he had.

Gendo originally sent Shinji to live with his sister-in-law and her husband, who already had 3 children of their own. The husband was a retired JSDF Special Forces Colonel who worked for the Ministry of Defense. I wanted to borrow the idea Yui's father was a member of SEELE, and so her sister was told to marry this officer and feed info on the military to SEELE. She did, but also became her mask and was a fine wife and mother and treated Shinji well. But something bad happened to them because of Shinji's great-uncle's sword that the son of the last person to see him alive on Iwo Jima returns it to his uncle. But Shinji was able to hide from the Yakuza thugs who wanted the sword, spent some time in a hospital, but then is kidnapped by them and held for ransom in exchange for the sword. Then the American who had returned the sword, along with 45 commandos his uncle used to command and one CIA officer stage a rescue and save him.
Later he gets to go live with the American who rescued him and wanted to adopt him. For the next 8 years he gets to live on a ranch near the Sawtooth Mountains. The American is married with a daughter who is a journalist. He owns several lay-up barns across the upper plains. The conditions on the adoption were he had to accept a commission at NERVE (since he is a Marine Corp veteran with a medical discharge and a Navy Cross, that was easy to get), and he had to take Shinji to the NERVE facility in Nevada once a month for simulator training. They both keep up their Japanese because they know they may have to return to Tokyo 3 someday...

Problem is that kind of breaks the character and the whole storyline of NGE as a whole. You would never even come near an Impact scenario out of circumstance like EoE did.
More active measures have to be taken to create such a situation and then you kind of end up with Rebuild. The N3I at the end of 2.0 was a product of some circumstances but as well the will of RebuildShinji who didn't give a damn about the whole rest in that exact moment.

Or you go the other way around have him being part of some charity organisation or other association to instill more confidence in him.
But then again you slowly come into the terrain of the hero complex which would be kinda boring.

For me the other possibility fits better. Make him more confident, let him accept what he does but let him slowly crack over the ordeal, much like soldiers do, from what he experienced.
Then leave him kinda afraid of tomorrow through that and you land at the thing you specified Heavy Fuel.

Man hatching out how you can break fictional characters is satisfyingly fun!

It would probably help if he has a guardian who's been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt. A veteran who's dealt with all of that already including loss. He's going to realize he's the only sane person in the room as he sees how messed up the senior command staff at NERVE Tokyo are (between Misato's drinking and Gendo's coldness towards his pilots) and notice how weird everything is-how the Evas seem to work, the appearance of Rei, why the Angels only attack Tokyo 3, among other things. It's enough to have him start Hunting for the truth.

I noticed that when I went trawling through fanfiction. Bout the only "different sensei" fic I did like was Thousand Shinji (which I still occasionally reread and was one of the fics that inspired me, so I thought it was alright), and that was written over a decade ago, and even then, Shinji's sensei was literally a chaos marine of the Thousand Sons. I'd say that inspired the whole different sensei trend (like how re-take inspired the Peggy Sue), but I'm not certain of the timeline and history of trends in Evangelion fanfiction (of which there's a good couple decades worth to go though :V)
Mine will be a bit more down to Earth, but more of an older guy who occasionally still gets into scrapes, is a decent amateur detective, and has a good feel for small-unit tactics.

Sounds like an Anno thing to do :V

Now, now, as weird as 3.33 was it was no Last Jedi. But Rain Johnson is no George Lucas either. As much as people, including myself, criticized the prequels, they were at least consistent with the other films. 3.33 is still consistent with the others, it just does a poor job of explaining what's going on and characterization.

They'd just spent 14 years living in the middle of a 3/4 apocalypse when the Apocalypse Maiden responsible for it was dropped into their lap.

Right or wrong, look me in the eye and tell me you'd greet them with open arms.

This guy gets it.

Now for the real shadowruns? Shinji was BM-03. Who were one and two, and did they wear Shinji's face?

Food for thought!

EDIT:

D'you mind sharing your weed?
I'd link Toto's cover of Hash Pipe but that's offtopic even by this thread's standards. :p

'Because I got high' by Afroman. :D

And yes, I don't dispute that - but the film still doesn't follow logic (or a plot). It's basically just Anno's middle finger to the audience.
...Also appropriate!

I don't think the plot is illogical or plotless. WILLE's crew is extraordinarily cruel and uncharitable, but their actions are logical given what we see in the movie. They're the plucky rebellion running on scraps and a hope that's nearly dead. They've just gotten their hands on a major tool to balance the scales with their much MUCH stronger opposition, but "surprise!" there's a walking, talking remote bomb in the form of Shinji Ikari who they honestly thought they'd never see again, and the first thing he does when he shows up is violently tear open all the wounds they've failed to heal over the last 14 years. It follows that the people who were there find it easier to offload their very VERY complicated feelings about the last 14 years onto Shinji and follow the lead of the people who weren't there who just hate Shinji. It's pathetic, but characteristic. I'd say it's a logical progression at that.

Now mind you, logical=/=correct or true or right; their behavior is absolutely reprehensible. If Misato had hugged Shinji like she did in TOS when the recovery succeeded, events would have turned out completely differently. But that's the point; "You Cannot Redo". Time's moved on. The characters moved on, and they can't, literally can't, understand Shinji's feelings because he hasn't moved or changed with them. It's the tragedy of Eva all over again, except worse because this time there's the sense that they don't even want to try because it hurts too much.

So yeah no saying it's illogical and plotless is that rare "factually wrong opinion". :p You're perfectly free to not like 3.33, it IS a mean and nasty "Fuck you"to your hopes and expectations. You're supposed to be upset with how things turn out. And unlike EoE there's no pointlessly 5deep7me bullshit that's there to mislead and confuse. Just pain and pathos.

Um...just to jump in...I believe there was something to do with Shinji's emotional state being very important and tied to Unit 01. He is an Impact Trigger at the very least, thus it would make sense to keep him emotionally stable and in the know. Treating him the way Misato and her gaggle of military illiterates did...isn't very helpful in achieving that objective. They should have kept him in a secure location, under armed Guard, but someone would have been attached to him so as to answer as many of his questions as possible and ease him into the world, he unwittingly or not, helped create (I believe Lieutenant Sakura Suzuhara would have been apt for this). Either way, Shinji Ikari is an exceedingly valuable asset and owing to his psyche reports, I'd severely doubt he'd go back to his father (whom he already despises) upon hearing of Nerv's various atrocities.

Wille's actions do make sense to some extent, they have been through hell after all and they are fundamentally civvies playing at being soldiers...but their superiors, if they have them, won't fucking see it that way and for very good reason. The Wunder crew cocked up big time and should face disciplinary action for it. When your incompetence buggers the world up even more and dents humanity's already drained numbers, the best you should hope for is a bloody Court Martial.

You mean the same kid who attacked his own side days (if not hours) before he blew up a good chunk of the planet?

Everyone seems to forget that...

Loving that Shinji is looking forward to a happy future, sad that there's so much in the way of that, including his own fears.

there's little SEELE can throw at you that can hurt an Evangelion. All the tanks and missiles in the world can't break an AT-Field."
Well, about that Kaji...
*glances apprehensively towards MP Evas*
Not to mention that while Shinji. and co are veritable Titans in their Evas, he and Asuka are merely squishy humans outside of them.

Thanks for the update.

The first event was him having a freak out because of what the Dummy Plug did to Unit-03 and Asuka. I think he was going after Gendo. (Although I would have just have had him walk up to the NERV pyramid and yell at the man through the Eva's loudspeakers.)

As for the other? All we saw was him pull Rei out of Big Z, who then died, from what I saw, Rei was pulled out of Big Z BEFORE he died and turned into an Eva sized Rei-thing made out of blood. To me it also looks like Shinji was disconnected from the Eva at the time and had NO IDEA of what was happening, much less control over it.

Also the looks like The Near Third Impact only made a preexisting hole in the Geofront bigger and make everyone watching who knew what Unit-01 was doing nearly wet themselves. A second one probably happened to make the Earth into what it looked like in the third Rebuild.
