.... I now want to read a Big O/NGE fusion fic.
Roger is Kaji's backup. When Fuyutsuki shows up to kill Kaji... Norman coshes him over the head while Roger gets Kaji the hell out of there. The next Angel to show up, Roger gets into the scrap and shows what someone that's actually trained in some form of martial arts can do in a mecha. Oh man, Dorothy would set Asuka off.
I've actually been toying with writing a Big O/NGE fusion for years now, one where Roger Smith is the distant relative who Shinji is sent to live with after Yui dies... with, well, consequences.

Working title: "Aggressive Negotiations" said:
"You abandon me for ten years, call me back at the last possible minute and then seriously expect me to dance at your whim?" said Shinji angrily.

"Then why did you come here, if you are still going to be useless to me?"

Shinji smirked nastily, and Ritsuko shivered involuntarily at the similarity to his father in that moment. "You'll have to talk to my Negotiator about that," he said, crossing his arms in defiance.

Behind his glasses, Gendo's eyes widened slightly. "Your negotiator...?"

The door onto the gantryway opened again. A middle-aged man with sharp, angular features, impeccably dressed in a black suit and eyes hidden behind a pair of sunglasses, walked out to stand next to Shinji and placed one hand on the boy's shoulder. Seeing them together now, Misato realized the boy's own suit was modeled after his guardian's. Still looking at Shinji, the man spoke to Gendo -- oddly enough in English. "The last time we met, Commander Ikari -- ten years ago, on the day you asked me to take in your son -- you and I both agreed..."

The man in the suit took off his sunglasses and looked up at the Commander. "...jobs should be left to the professionals," said Roger Smith.

First rule of the Martian Successor Nadesico movie - we DO NOT talk about the Martian Successor Nadesico movie!
I really like Martian Successor Nadesico, but I heard so many things about that movie that I refuse to watch it and ruin my internal image of the series.
Apparently there was a bridge between the anime and the movie--a Sega Saturn videogame. Problem is it was a Saturn game so no one ever played it, and also it never left Japan. Japan still hated PoD so it's not an excuse.

Still. LOL Saturn.

Lucky you. I did, and now I wish I hadn't.

Quick, can someone point me to any fanfic where the 'Nadesico Movie' scenario is derailed, no matter the how?
Dear diary, today I learned there are Martian Successor fanfics....

Panzer Dragoon, Shining The Holy Ark, Nights Into Dreams, Daytona, Virtua Fighter and Co. want to have a word with you! :mob:

Seriously, it is an underrated system.

Just came out at a bad time where it just couldn't compete with the other systems, and it failed to make a fan base for itself, which didn't help. Hardly a terrible system to be sure, but it wasn't amazing, either.

Re: SRW talk: Reminder that Unit-13 is literally a serial killer even when Shinji's controlling it. The Double Longinus attack is somehow more horrifying than Berserk-01 eating its kills.

Hey, Shining Force 3 alone makes it a worthy system (and the fan translation of parts 2 and 3 means there's triple the SF3).

....but it's still the Sega Saturn, so LOL.

Ha. Ha. Ha. Hoo boy. At the risk of getting really super off topic, the Saturn bombed because Sega Japan hated and I mean actually loathed how the American branch was showing them up. Sega was a fairly comfortable 3rd place (bottom of the pack but holding on) in Japan but SoA had beaten Nintendo over the head with the Genesis/Megadrive in the states for years. Sega of Japan started refusing to coordinate with their American branch, sat on games, completely fucked their own retail partnerships and ruined SoA's marketing strategy. The Saturn couldn't compete and couldn't make a name for itself because SoJ decided the Saturn failing was preferable to SoA being the architect of the system's success.

That actually sounds awesome. Unfortunately, the Big O is about as diametrically opposed to an Eva in terms of speed and agility as it can be. It would have massive firepower, though, if supported by a trio of Evas to protect it and punch through the Angel's AT field. It could be a heck of a crossover.

Hey, you guys, I still love my poor Dreamcast. Mine still works, too.

I'm more interested in how The Negotiator and his household would influence Shinji... and how they might decide to back up Roger's essentially adopted son once he sends them word about what's going on. If anyone could tear through SEELE, Roger, Norman and Dorothy would. In comparison, Gendo wouldn't stand a chance; especially if they subvert Kaji. Someone like Roger would have tons of contacts with the UN too...

:p
Thought of how Leliel would speak, and considering Leliel's a bit... Non compliant with the laws of 3-space, and wouldn't be understood readily by the denizens of the third dimension.

So, a bit of obfuscated language that no one in that universe could understand would do the trick :V
Leiliel: "(√-1) 8 Σ π"

So you're saying that, sometimes, the Steve Irwin approach of "Crikey look at that bugger! I'mma poke it with a stick!" is wrong?
Never wrong, per se. Merely... performed with inadequate safeguards, sometimes.
Big O aka "what if Bruce Wayne had a giant robot?"
I once toyed with the idea that Paradigm City was Gotham, and Norman is actually Bruce Wayne... who, after ending up amnesiac, latched onto his strongest father-figure memories and re-modeled himself in the mold of Alfred Pennyworth....

"My AT Field is BURNING RED! My mother's babbling tells me to defeat you! BURNING--" what? Oh, wrong giant-robot series, nevermind.

On the one hand, Big O would be like Jet Alone -- better piloted, but no ATF. OTOH... if we look at some of the reveals in the late 2nd season (mini-impact events? Serious reality-fuckery of some kind, certainly), everyone's favorite cast-iron mech might just be less helpless against the Angels than would appear at first glance.

Of course, if we skip the Giant Robot bits and just stick to character interactions, well....

Shinji: "Don't call Rei a doll! She's just like Dorothy-oneesan, and she's no doll either!"
(really, Rei would be downright comfortable and familiar to Shinji in this context....)

Misato: "Shinji, where did you learn to cook British cuisine?"
Shinji: "Same place I learned to maintain mech-- er, cars! And driving motorcycles, and shoo-- er, shopping! For, ah, the best deals!"

Shinji (seeing MIsato's apartment for the first time): "Alfred-sensei... now I see what Roger-niisan would have been like without you to take care of him. I will do you proud and rise to this challenge, I swear! On my honor as a professional!"

Shinji (on meeting Asuka): "Hm... let me check Roger-niisan's notes. Lessee, 'negotiating with Tsunderes.' Okay: 'never smile at a dere-ing tsundere, it makes them violent.' Good to know...."

"Kaworu-kun! I refuse to accept this solution. There is an outcome that allows all of us to live, if we're willing to negotiate in good faith."

excuse me? Sega of America were the ones who torpedoed their own market share with crap like the 32x and SEGA CD and dropping 2d games to focus on polygons with the Saturn (the systems biggest weakness). Not to mention the abysmal developer support. Hell, SoA launched the Saturn 4 months early, when it had no supply of units and half the launch titles were not done. At a 100$ over the ps1s price, too.

SoJ may have dug the grave, but SoA threw themselves in headfirst.

I don't recall that it ever came up in-series, but I imagine Roger Smith doesn't particularly like kids. Gendo would've picked up on this, and counted on it to help keep Shinji alienated and prime for bonding with his Eva should the time come. And at first, things would've played out according to the Scenario: Roger would have absolutely no idea what to do with a 4-year-old Shinji. Norman would've tried, but the language barrier wouldn't help (my headcanon is that Paradigm City speaks English).

He would not, however, have counted on R. Dorothy Wayneright. If you thought she bonded with the kitten quickly, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Especially since she can upload the Japanese language in a matter of minutes.

Next thing Roger knows, the kid is hiding behind Dorothy's skirts anytime he's in the room and sitting next to her on the piano bench, little legs swinging.

That said, we should probably take this to another thread or PMs or something to avoid derailing the thread.

This is what I was afraid of when I brought that up.

The Saturn launch is actually what I'm getting at when I say SoJ fucked SoA's marketing strategy. Sega Japan forced the American branch to launch the Saturn at E3, and in fact Tom Kalinske planned to hold off on launching the Saturn for another year (or two?) while he laid the groundwork for the Saturn and sold another few million Megadrives.

SoA didn't jump, it was tied up, beaten and thrown. It's pretty fascinating stuff actually.

Re: Shinji Smith: All this presumes that Gendo doesn't get a letter from "Smith, R." on perfect office stationary that says "No."

And then Big O punches out Sachiel and NERV never gets permission from the Japanese government to fight the Angel War in the first place.

Perhaps I'm just a simple, close-minded American, but I absolutely cannot see how that makes ANY kind of logical sense, especially for businessmen.

"We are businessmen. Our very jobs, and depending on the type of company and local laws, our freaking legal duty is to increase profits."

"We have a branch of the company that is making is fuckloads of dosh, and making our brand infinitely more valuable!"

"Fuck those guys!"

To quote the philosopher: "Pride goeth before a fall"

It was after Armisael, in canon and (it seems) in A&T
The Pilots' nude test was during Iruel. Ritsuko's Nude Performance Review is next update.
I think Kaji is lying. He DOES know just what SEELE is capable of and he doesn't like the look of their odds. I'm mostly basing this off his hesitation in the opening line you quoted, and Strype's choice of words, "pushed out through a tight throat." Dude's basically trying to not sob in front of his kids and partner.

Shinji, on the other hand, is on an upswing right now. He never looks forward to anything. It's always "Let's deal with this problem in front of me and then I can wait until someone needs me again." His relationship with Asuka has been very good for him.
I meant to get back to this earlier, but Kaji's also skipping lightly over the fact what he's talking about is 'Shinji, you'll be able to kill thousands and thousands of soldiers in minutes while they have next-to-no-meaningful ability to hurt your Eva, even if the umbilical's cut.' He knows how Shinji feels about killing, and telling him 'your best bet in that situation is to kill like the Black Plague' will not be taken well...
