So you're saying that, sometimes, the Steve Irwin approach of "Crikey look at that bugger! I'mma poke it with a stick!" is wrong?
It came pre-poked! Katsuragi broke the first rule of the SCP Foundation: don't unpoke things that come pre-poked!

I'll point out that, in hindsight, the other alternative Shinji could have taken in that battle was to just kill Zeruel and leave Rei to die.

Which is something that none of our crew will like (and some won't even accept) after they watch "3.33" and connect the dots.
There wasn't a winning move given Shinji's operating knowledge. He made a choice--and it happened to lead to the worst possible outcome. Sometimes that happens.

Rebuild's actually kinda nasty about that. Asuka does the most selfless thing she's done in any continuity to make someone else happy, and pays for it. Rei opens up to people and starts to take an interest in the world, then she dies and her bodies end up wrecking havoc for 14 years. Shinji "mans up" just like that section of the Eva fandom always wanted him to, and we get 3.33.

Because the kids' personalities were never completely the problem (though they SURE DIDN'T HELP), the problem in the original series and in Rebuild is still communication! You can change anything you want about your life and personality, but if you hold back, don't talk to people, and don't open yourself up, you're going to make the same mistakes over and over again.

Finally free! And with two whole things to finish responding to/respond to entirely!

'So I have to obey her selfish desire, that just happens to be mine too.

"To serve others, I must first serve myself." Quite a useful conclusion, for those who feel they don't matter while others do. I know from experience.

"You'll… you'll do fine, Shinji-kun," he pushed out through a tight throat. "You've got Asuka-chan, the other Children… There's only one more Angel, and then SEELE, well… as harsh as the idea might sound, if you can take down giant monsters like the Angels, there's little SEELE can throw at you that can hurt an Evangelion. All the tanks and missiles in the world can't break an AT-Field."

Is Kaji not actually aware of the MP-Evas??

"I… I know. But I'm still… scared. I've never had people relying on me before, either. Or wanted to… to have it all behind me. Just done and past, so I can… just play music for her, and sit in the sun."

Hm, is this the start of a new backslide and major plot element, or just a comment on the topic?

Ritsuraptor.

"Shhh, you'll wake Shinji up. I'll explain. I say attempted, because he was quickly disarmed by Kaworu."

"...by disarmed, do you mean-"

"And then Rei, quite violently she said, ripped out his soul and caught him in a bucket. I think she also berated Kaworu for being too violent, which was rather ironic considering what she did to him."

"...okay, but what about the disarmed-"

"Last I heard he reconstituted naked and disoriented, outside a police office, handcuffed to a light post with said bucket on his head. Apparently he had several warrants out for him, was on the news for a while. Baka-t Boy they called him."

Of ALL the worst people to try to mug, you pick the ABSOLUTE worst two. One can melt you into LCL, the other has incredibly strong forcefields, and they can both telepathically communicate and have all of NERV backing them up if they so desire. Like, mugging Gendo or a SEELE member would be safer. At least they don't have superpowers.

A sly little smirk appeared on her face, as she craned her head to her boyfriend.

"Hey Shinji, you wanna get married?"

He locked up for a few seconds as his brain processed the most nonchalant proposal in history, a blush creeping up on him as his head kicked into gear. "Yeah, alright." He replied as nonchalantly as Asuka's query.

She kissed him, quite vigorously too, leaving Shinji with a dumb smile as she poked her tongue at Ritsuko. "There. Now we're engaged."

Everyone just looked on at them. A mixture of shock, confusion and elation.

"That was a fairly understated proposal for someone like you, Asuka."

A sly giggle escaped her. "I know Shinji isn't one for over the top things like that. That's for the wedding, after all!" A wide grin appeared.

Yay!!! :D :D :D

Noticed a fair few "tumbling down"s. They're already quoting the Laserdiscs :V

Okay, DEFINITE Futurama reference this time. (Do they carry harpoons, and sing whaling tunes thanks to a distinct lack of moon whales? Damn, I have that stupid little jingle memorised :D)

Ritsuko twitched. 'She doesn't know, don't shout at her. She doesn't know, don't. shout. at her.'

The nude test happened in A&T though, right? It was during Iruel's assault, I believe. So what doesn't she know?

Kaj: "Again with the inappropriate music."
Mi: "...this is what they use at fucking school graduations. Who the hell thought that was appropriate?"

Hm, "let's be friends forever" and "farewell until we meet again" aren't exactly inappropriate for the situation.

Kaw: "Possibly. But that would put him on a power level equal or over that of my father."
A: "So we're practically facing Adam."
Kaw: "I'd liken this Zeruel to him. Based on what he could do."

Hm, I'd disagree there. Adam could probably just wipe everything in the prefecture out with a blink. Zeruel, as terrifying as he is, isn't THAT ridiculous.

"...i- i love you all." She cried, the pilots continuing to hold her.

BG Character's Evangelion Hangover omake when? :V

"Whenever some greater power like that gives you a wish, and you could wish for any damn thing you want, there's always an unintended consequence."

*madoka intensifies*

Shinji thought. "...so you're suggesting your name was created?"

Pretty sure Tabbris (two b's) is an actual angel in the traditions somewhere. I've seen it mentioned in places that probably wouldn't have been influenced by Eva.

The red puella joked,

Oh no, they're Puellae already? :D

-----------------------------------------------------

More fun to read as always! I would have liked to see the Pilots' reactions to the post-credits scene and preview, maybe next installment? And I guess I should get around to watching Rebuild 3 sometime before you do the Chronicles for it.

And, if you're taking suggestions for things to watch, A&T cast might have some things to say about Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann or Mobile Fighter Evangelion (assuming the writer gives an OK on that) :D Definitely they should read/watch at least one fan story featuring Mari as someone familiar to them. Maybe give them AsuRei or KawoShin stories? Or hell, the actual A&T Hangover :V

Thanks again for your work!

*looks at plot of A&T*

you don't say?

Actually I would like to see the OTL NGE cast read Advice and Trust... but that would not be fun at all : ( It would be anti-fun.

So I actually don't want to see that at all. Maybe give canon NGE cast A&T as a dream. All the pilots get a dream, plus Misato, Maya and Ritz - Have is spread over several nights. Nothing really changes untill someone talks to someone else about the dreams.

It's actually happening as we speak :V It was after Armisael, in canon and (it seems) in A&T (most recent snip at this time, 11.7, shows that she will still most likely have to go through it). It was quite lucky that was the preview posted, slightly better canon compliance is always good in an omake :V

*madoka intensifies*

Just you wait :V

Pretty sure Tabbris (two b's) is an actual angel in the traditions somewhere. I've seen it mentioned in places that probably wouldn't have been influenced by Eva.

From what I looked up (and I actually did take a fair amount of time to check up on my knowledge of Abrahamic religions), I couldn't find reference to the name Tabris except for Evangelion related content (Closest I got to an actual Angel was the Arabic transliteration on Evageeks, but I couldn't find reference to such an angel in Islamic canon, so that led nowhere. Of course, maybe I didn't look hard enough :V)

Then again, looking up Tabbris does bring up a single article on DuckDuckGo, so that would've at least given me something (Even though I'm still not certain as to what canon it fits in, probably Christian?) Oh well, I can always explain my own lack of knowledge by applying it to the characters :V

Jewish mystic tradition.

Officially, Christianity only recognizes three Angels. Of course they're infinite in number, but there are only three who get named in the Bible: Michael, Raphael and Gabriel. Therefore any time you see another angel, it's part of the Judeo-Christian mystic tradition.

Which means that yes, every last one of the Angels in Eva is non-canon. :V

Also your Google-fu is weak.

Specifically (quoting Wikipedia for brevity):
Wikipedia said:
The Catholic Church gives no official recognition to the names given in some apocryphal sources, such as Raguel, Saraqael and Remiel (Book of Enoch) or Izidkiel, Hanael, and Kepharel (other such sources).
"Remiel? We Catholics don't recognise him; but oh, we have four more unnamed archangels." :V

Certainly an interesting story. I can see how Kaworu's story can be related to it. Hell, that's practically what he did in the Chronicles omake anyway.

Metatron SEELE: "I made you, go do this."
Tabris Tabris: "Okay."
Metatron SEELE: "We're done with you, now go die."
Tabris Tabris: "Do I have to?"
Metatron SEELE: "Yes, God The Scrolls say you need to."
Tabris Kaworu: "...No."
Kaworu leaves.
Metatron SEELE: "...Well shit."

Also, maybe my Google-fu would be better if I actually used Google :V

Looks like Ritsuko's gambit with Kensuke is going well. Of course, her ultimate goal would be to find out what's on those discs of his, without doing the whole 'bash down the door and confiscate' business. Of course, that's if Kensuke doesn't get distracted :V And there's still the potential of other material to make their way into Tokyo-3 (depends if people want more of course :V). Fanfics (probably in an anime format, and if I could procure permission from their authors), other anime (maybe ones closer to Eva in tone, like Franxx), etc etc.
Oooh, I've got an idea:

Same era of anime, and it also straddles the line between "Super robot" and "Real robot" like Evangelion does.

Ah, I think somewhere down the line Ritsuko's "nude Seele meeting" and the Pilots' "nude sync test" got mixed up. Gomene.

@TsukikoHime I'm on my phone and don't feel like parsing out your big post (it's a pain, trust me).

I think Kaji is lying. He DOES know just what SEELE is capable of and he doesn't like the look of their odds. I'm mostly basing this off his hesitation in the opening line you quoted, and Strype's choice of words, "pushed out through a tight throat." Dude's basically trying to not sob in front of his kids and partner.

Shinji, on the other hand, is on an upswing right now. He never looks forward to anything. It's always "Let's deal with this problem in front of me and then I can wait until someone needs me again." His relationship with Asuka has been very good for him.

Also, now that I'm back from vacation, here's a puzzler for you all: what exactly is the Fruit of Knowledge? The Fruit of Life is a means to generate energy endlessly so that you can face all comers, so what would be the Fruit of Knowledge? What exists in Nature that allowed the children of LILITH to take all comers? I think it's DNA, and that inserting it into ADAM is what woke Him up for 2I. It'd explain what the Angels have effectively-human DNA, as SEELE would certainly use a human's DNA to awaken ADAM.

It's not DNA, or not the concept of DNA, as the Angels were said to have DNA that "resembled humans". It's possible that Angel DNA is as similar to human DNA in COMPOSITION as a computer is to the human brain. But I took it as meaning the same information was encoded in both.

According to Kaworu, the Fruit of Knowledge was creativity. He could not conceive of music and art, and considered it the highest achievement of the Lilim civilization. That would suggest that the Fruit of Knowledge is something having to do with humanity's ability to get together and produce great things. Language, science, culture, society, religion, government, engineering, architecture. Children of Lilith create power, Children of Adam are power.

I've also theorized in the past that the Fruit of Knowledge is reproduction, and conversely, a limited lifespan. We don't know if the Angels reproduce, and if they are immortal they don't have to, or at the most they can be replaced by their Progenitor should their bodies fail. That could be why they were searching for Adam, he's the only one who can replace the losses they take, and without him their "war" can't really succeed. Of course, that's never outright stated in the canon, so that's just my own assumption based on similar tropes.

Another likely candidate is ambition, the drive to develop and become better. Presumably the FAR ran into a problem once they developed the S2 engine because their pride and ambition, which was formed when they were weak and constantly facing death, drove them to fight amongst each other for the power they had found. So they felt the Children of the Fruit of Life should lack that fear of death, drive and ambition, for their own good.

You know what'd make the Laserdisc!Eva class really paranoid?

They mysteriously next get a copy of the Laserdisc Chronicles. :V

Reminds me of the Doctor Who episode, "Blink":

"Hey, how did they know we said that?"

"Were we even in control of what we were saying? What if we were FORCED to say that by this fanfiction?"

"AAAAAHHHHHHHHH!"

Big O aka "what if Bruce Wayne had a giant robot?"

"Part Batman. Part Bond. Part GIANT CITY SMASHING ROBOT!" - Cartoon Network

Loved that show, BTW

The "romantic dialogue" type of 'death flag' gets used so liberally in this story that it doesn't really count. Everyone uses them, with the possible exceptions of Rei and Kaworu who have the biggest relationship obstacle to overcome.

And when they used it, it was a death flag... of course Rei got better, but not the point.

So I actually don't want to see that at all. Maybe give canon NGE cast A&T as a dream. All the pilots get a dream, plus Misato, Maya and Ritz - Have is spread over several nights. Nothing really changes untill someone talks to someone else about the dreams.

… at which point yet another divergence goes spinning off into the vastness. :D

Same era of anime, and it also straddles the line between "Super robot" and "Real robot" like Evangelion does.

Another good one that straddles the Super Robot/Real Robot line is Dai-Guard. Even has the same sort of extremely abstract kaiju designs. Sits at almost entirely the opposite end of the cynicism scale from Evangelion, though.

"Did we... did we really..."

"Yes. More than once, actually. We had to be careful, of course, not to be seen..."

'Sneaking off together, this-and-that...' More truth! Rei began to blush.

"Was it... good?"

Kaworu closed his eyes and took a deep breath, pausing before answering.

"Yes. It was the most powerful experience in my life. I could not even speak coherently after that first time."

Rei's blush deepened. Also true?!?

"I really gave you..."

"Very precious and very secret, yes; I truly treasure it."

"Then, you gave me..."

"My first effort at such things; a somewhat clumsy first step, I will admit, but I could tell you were deeply moved by it all the same. Your joy was as plain as day."

Rei's blush by now was downright crimson.

Kaworu smiled wistfully. "It saddens me that you have forgotten so much. We made such beautiful music together, and you enjoyed it so much... Would you like for me to begin teaching you again? I am sure we would enjoy the experience as much as the first time..."

Rei's blush became actually luminescent, and Kaworu could swear he heard a teakettle whistling somewhere as words seemed to come out of Rei under high pressure.

"NoImeanyesImeannottonightImeanIdon'tknowahatImeanjusttoomuchinformationthankyoupleasejustgo!"

Rei seemed to slump at the end, still blushing deeply.

"Ayanami-san?"

The look in Rei's eyes was blank... not like under the influence of NERV's drugs, but blank nonetheless.

Kaworu smiled and shook his head. "...I will show myself out, then. Good night, Ayanami-san."

Rei remained standing there for some time after Kaworu left.

"Rei.exe has crashed and needs to be rebooted..." she whispered to herself.

Missed this in my previous catchup posts. (going through it all backwards) Of course, what's hilarious here is that Rei did exactly the same thing prior to leaning about sexual innuendo. I can see Kaworu doing the exact same thing.

.... I now want to read a Big O/NGE fusion fic.
Roger is Kaji's backup. When Fuyutsuki shows up to kill Kaji... Norman coshes him over the head while Roger gets Kaji the hell out of there. The next Angel to show up, Roger gets into the scrap and shows what someone that's actually trained in some form of martial arts can do in a mecha. Oh man, Dorothy would set Asuka off.

I also like to think of him as "What Shinji Ikari wants to be when he grows up," but that may be just me.
What Shinji wants to be when he grows up:

What Shinji is afraid he'll be when he grows up:

What Shinji will be when he grows up:

With optional

(Anyone who thinks 3.33 was bad for established characterization needs to see Martian Successor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness. At least Wille's heel turn fit established characterization...)
