Reading this while eating breakfast in a hotel lounge... everyone now thinks I am crazy - thanks!

Clearly this ends with Asuka and Shinji being luvy dovy to each other. But I do keep expecting Misato to call them out on their BS.... maybe the events happened to quick..... also was this an excuse for Shinji to see Asuka in a ponytail?

It could be that Ritsuku is the one that finally asks the two pilots what is going on with Misato.
Then, after the explanation, asks what she can do to help.

This was a brilliant plan to COMPLETELY ruin any sort of equilibrium Misato may have. Add in the "Did you know our dead mothers are in the Evas?" talk and you could shut down Misato's brain enough to get away with pretty much ANYTHING by the end of the week.

Now when you need her for when the next angel attacks in a week or so then you're kinda boned since she'll still be unresponsive. At least Rei will likely have the experience to get her on an IV for fluids (or if not her than Ritsuko, but she isn't nearly as trusted).

Hope you feel better, Strypgia. I also think that Misato is more likely to to put her foot down and demand an explanation than to simply decide its too much of a bother, if the Children are blatantly messing with her. "Role playing", she would probably decide is just weird stress relief, but if Shinji and Asuka push the "we've always been this way" theme to far, then I figure Misato would be too irritated to want to play along. Well, she might just go "whatever" for that night, but it might well sour her mood.

I really do hope they pull the 'what are you talking about?' card when they go back to Normal and Misato asks what the fsck that was.
I'm imagining something like the following:

-----
Friday morning, Misato shuffled from her room, cautiously peering into the kitchen.

Shinji was cooking breakfast. So far, so good. Turning her head and craning her neck a little bit, she shot a look in the living room... that stopped short on encountering Asuka just finishing to set the table. "Oh, hi. Morning, Misato."

"What was that yesterday?" blurted the purple-haired woman.

The redhead gave her an inquisitive look. "What was what?"

"You... Shin-... But... Yesterday..." Pointing a quivering finger between Asuka and Shinji, Misato could only stammer.

"Shin-chan, table is set," called Asuka into the kitchen and then turned to her guardian, laying a hand on her shoulder. "Are you sure you're feeling alright? You seem awfully stressed-out, lately."

Something snapped in Misato. In a distracted voice, she said, "I gotta go," and fled the apartment.

It is only halfway to Nerv that her brain re-engaged, and something occured to her.

"Shin-chan!?"

-----

And let's better not talk about when she comes home that evening. Shinji and Asuka on the couch watching TV, Shinji's arm around the girl's shoulders, and Asuka asks conversationally, "How was your day, Misato?"

If she doesn't break out the Shōchū then and there, she already has.

I thought strip chess was enough...

I've forgotten why this is happening in the first place though

I think thats the plan. Bamboozle Misato so much that when they say 'oh by the way, we're fucking like rabbits' her response will be 'I dont care!'
Would you say I was overbearing if I once again pointed out that that's not how people actually work?

This charade can only go on until Misato plants both of their asses on the couch and demands an explanation in exchange for not grounding them until the seventh impact. You can't do escalation like this if the person you're trying to condition can end everything the minute she feels annoyed enough, and her threshold of annoyance is far far far lower than what's necessary for what you want to achieve.

And even they somehow avoided her reading them the riot act, what exactly could they do to make "We're two teenagers banging away under your roof" seem inconsequential? There is a surprisingly small number of scenarios where that's not a big goddamn deal.

I don't see why it's such a big deal. They're using protection and seem to have a fairly healthy relationship. What more do you want? Hell, Judging by Misato's internal dialogue, I'd say she even agrees with me. Her reaction in the end is probably going to be "You were messing with me just for that?!" or some such.

Waiting 'till they're legal, AKA 18? Or 21, when the brain is fully developed? That's the big catch I see most discussed when the issue of Misato and the Children in 'adult' relationships comes up. Not that I'm disagreeing with you, I was hooked on A&E by the Shinji/Asuka, I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

The issue is that they stand fair-to-middling odds of being ripped apart by a world-ending monster considerably prior to that. "If they're old enough to pilot giant robots into life-and-death fights in defence of humanity" and all.
