The issue is that they stand fair-to-middling odds of being ripped apart by a world-ending monster considerably prior to that. "If they're old enough to pilot giant robots into life-and-death fights in defence of humanity" and all.
At the risk of restarting an old conversation: they aren't old enough to pilot giant robots. They just do it anyway.

... yes, that's rather my point. They're an exception to the usual rules, because the fucking giant robots (pun not intended) won't accept anyone else, and are kind of necessary to the whole "saving the world from giant monsters" thing.

While they're relationship is something of an exception, it's hard for the adults to beat back a lifetime of social mores saying "Not till you're older."

The fact that the have synchronized with each other is also a reasonable argument in their favor. "We have actually been through a mind-link, we understand each other better than most married couples."

Yeah, this.

We all know Misato isn't going to stop them. At worst she might voice some displeasure but she wont do anything about it. It's not that kind of fic.

That still doesn't mean that learning about it won't be a significant shock to her that will take some processing and can't simply be swiped under the mental rug.

Have Shinji, Asuka, and Rei file for Emancipation... Watch Misato go "WHAT?"
Well you Didn't seem concerned about two of us having enough sex to make a rabbit envious.

Gendo probably won't care as long as the pilots follow orders, and keep killing angels.

Any kind of "emancipated minor" status is pretty meaningless when you live in a Sinister Conspiracy's company town.

They know that. They just can't say that they know that.

Exactly. As Asuka said to Kaji:
"How likely are we to live to see seventeen, Kaji?" Asuka interrupted acidly. "We are Evangelion Pilots! Every time we sortie, we could die! If not for Shinji's last-second rescue, I'd already be dead in that volcano! He could have been fried to a crisp by Ramiel's particle beam! Rei nearly did get fried! We could die any day, and you want us to just hope we live long enough to do what I know you and Misato do every weekend?!"

Alas, I am not the kind of bastard required to cut them off, it is true. Well, even if Misato tried to, you think they'd take that lying down? (So to speak.) They've already resorted to the school janitorial supply closet when desperate before.

Yeah, they try that, and watch NERV Command go "LOLnope."

Right. Perhaps she can stop them from having sex under her roof, but the only way to stop them from having sex altogether is for someone to literally follow at least one of them around everywhere. It probably also doesn't hurt that since they've started literally sleeping together, Asuka has stopped having nightmares and both their synch ratios have been consistently climbing.

Waiting 'till they're legal, AKA 18? Or 21, when the brain is fully developed? That's the big catch I see most discussed when the issue of Misato and the Children in 'adult' relationships comes up. Not that I'm disagreeing with you, I was hooked on A&E by the Shinji/Asuka, I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

When is brain fully developed? I mean, life is not a video game where there is IF (age > 18) THEN brain_development = DONE, humans don't "fully" develop in nice numbers.

I'm 21, and I don't think my brain is fully developed. I've seen plenty of other people, some of them positively ancient, whose brains I don't think are remotely developed enough. :p

I know I risk tearing the argument open again, but I'd like to point out that this story takes place on a post-apocalyptic earth where our social mores do not exactly apply.

At the very least, ages of consent were quite probably lowered in the wake of half of humanity dying, I would think.

Considering how outraged Asuka was at the thought of just living in the same house with a boy, I'm not too sure about that.

Asuka arrives in Japan thinking that boys are yuck and men - or specifically, Kaji - are where it's at.

This seems an entirely normal pattern of thought for a teenage girl, independent of any consideration of what the AoC is.

Expanding on what grommile said, you have to remember that Germany would by all likelihood be an island of bliss in relation to SI's rising tides. They probably didn't lose that many people/infrastructure to have had that kind of paradigm shift.

And considering Asuka was concerned that Misato might force them to split up, it seems to imply German sexual mores aren't that loose.

Anyway, I just got done binge-reading this fic, and I love it!

Welcome, @Ultimate Paragon! You have triggered the 'New Reader Forces Strype To Update!' Rule. Next update no later than Friday. Welcome to SV. :)

To speak to Asuka's fears, it's less to do with German mores than Asuka's personal fear that 'anything in my life that's ever made me happy has been taken away from me. As long as no one knows about Shinji and I, they can't take it away.'

This has potential. The closer Shinji and Asuka get to the big reveal the more nervous Asuka gets, the more nervous Asuka gets the more snippy/introspective she gets. A good character growth scenario.

(Have fun with that Shinji :D)
