Rei-2 and Kaworu commit double suicide either during or after Armisael. So just imagine that conjoined rei-kaworu from EoE blowing up in the middle of Tokyo-3.

As a result, Gendo finally notices how weird Rei's been now, deletes the memory uploads and just spends five minutes with a blank clone to pull off his Third Impact with ease.

:V

Confirmed by word of God; just how (death; soul fusion; ???) hasn't been told.

I'd go with "Rei III, along with IV to XXVI, when Rits or Maya (neither of them is willing to clarify) bumps against the 'eject' button while having 'fun' on the console"? :p

". . . oops?"

"Well... I guess you're a mommy now?"

"Not funny."

~elsewhere~

Kaworu: "I sense a great disturbance in the Force, as if the Call suddenly cried out 'I QUIT!' and was suddenly silenced. I fear something amazing has happened."

Shinji: "...the 'Call'? That's now how the quote goes, you know?"

Yes Godzillaslayer10 Re-Take is worth reading. In fact one of my favorite Re-Take moments involves a touching and heartfelt scene between Ritsuko and Gendo of all people.
Man, as much as he's a terrible person, Gendo is a great character, once he lets go of all his baggage.
I dunno, I also count RE-TAKE!Gendo as possibly the worst Gendo Ikari I've seen, after he
deliberately and knowingly sends a pregnant Asuka on a suicide mission the day before her wedding with Shinji. And lets Shinji watch the whole thing.

Yeah. I'm not sure all of RE-TAKE is good, but in places where it tries to be dark and weird it seems to match the tone of the original series remarkably well.
If anything, one of RE-TAKE's highest appeal is that it matches the tone of the series and the flow of events do not seem outside of what could have happened. On the other side, one of the reasons I'm aware that some people don't like it is due to Rei's characterization in the first chapter.

Rei II commiting suicide is something that didn't sat well with some for instance.

The lead-up to that was a very unusual combination of disturbing and heartbreaking...

So... it was how a suicide in fiction should be treated?
I was more referring to Rei's behavior before her suicide. Realizing that she loved Shinji, but Shinji loved Asuka more (not to mention Shinji was still nervous about Rei thanks to the revelation of her true nature, which Rei knew nothing about because this was earlier in the timeline), Rei borrowed a pair of blue contact lenses to match Asuka's eye color. When that wasn't enough, she dumped a bucket of red paint on her own head right in front of Shinji, telling him that now she has the hair color Shinji prefers, just like Asuka. And started repeating Asuka's "Anta baka?" catchphrase in what was implied to be her usual soft monotone. She even promised to grow her hair out long like Asuka, and learn Asuka's mannerisms perfectly, and become a better EVA pilot, as long as Shinji would love her instead of Asuka. It was getting turned down even after this, that pushed her over the edge. Seeing Rei of all people having a meltdown like that because she loves someone who doesn't return her feelings and isn't quite sure what to do about it...

Well.

At least the author can write mental health problems well. And knows better than to play it for humor.

Rei's behavior before her...
Kyoko moment was actually a cleverly bit of Foreshadowing on the writer part.

As EOE Shinji didn't actually time travel to the past, he ended up in a parallel world. Re-Take Rei || was different from canon Rei ||.

I can see why people wouldn't like it, but I really did. It seemed like the sort of thing that might have come out of a deeply depressed author.

Plus it gave me something to hold over my players' heads when they were deciding whether to try and turn my quest into a harem comedy.

Don't give them that potentiality in the first place if you don't want to become That Guy.

I'd imagine get the characters to act in a way that would believably end in a poly relationship.

What kind of hoops would they have to have gone through to actually do that and not have it end terribly?
First thing is common attractor. In this case, that's Shinji. Then you need to break down the emotional walls around the girls (or boys, as the case my be). Then break down the C.A.'s emotional barriers. Then you pray to every god and Goddess of love that everyone gets hit with a Cupid's cluster bomb.

Note: You have to keep everyone alive (barring those who can come back), in one piece (unless you have a major love of Katawa Shoujo), and sane (for a given value of snity) for this to work.

Pretty much. The way I figure it, there would be four major hurdles:

Introducing the idea of polyamory without anyone freaking out
Bringing any of the girls involved incredibly close
Resolving the type of emotional issues that might make sharing scary or uncomfortable
Getting Shinji to fall in love with two or more girls at once.

And number 3 would not have been easy. In my mind both Rei and Asuka have the kinds of insecurities that would make them crave a 'real' relationship and view sharing as a sign of inadequacy on their parts.

Why do I have the feeling that the best case scenario regarding step one would involve Misato being drunk when she makes the suggestion so they would hear the idea but and not look at us like we grew a second and third head and that wouldn't even be a guarantee?
Yeah it would have been way too much effort to make those stars align.

As fun as that would have been in SIRP, yeah, the obstacles were too much to run the risk. While it may not have achieved the happy OT3, we at least got Rei and Asuka to 'close friends, willing to fight and die for each other' which is pretty damn good.

It only even works as much as it does here because Rei grew very fond of both of them for different reasons: Shinji for mostly the canon ones (being kind to her without expectations, reaching out to her in the aftermath of Ramiel), Asuka for being the one to look at Rei's life and tell her to drop the drugs and move in next to them. That Asuka was so much happier thanks to being in love let her look at Rei's confession far differently than she would have if she was not, and like I mentioned before, the sheer amazement of having two people willing to say out loud they love her that much really made an impression on Asuka. So we had an Asuka far more open to the idea than she would have been otherwise. And of course, Rei had far fewer f*cks to give about gender and societal expectations, and she views Asuka and Shinji as an indivisible unit, so falling for them both was relatively simple for her.

Writing is happening. Update tonight? Tomorrow if not.
