Of course, Klingon society has expectations that forces non-military considerations in force design ; a situation where major politicians are expected to be field commanders leads to everyone getting their own BoP
A more rationa force design, and they would have conquered the Quadrant by now

The secret is that the Klingon Empire isn't an Empire. It's a few dozen nations in a trench coat with a loose, loose mutual defense pact.
 
Their ships are so cheap. Holy hell.
But that could be their respective cost compared to their economy, rather than the same cost to cost ratio we use.
They had (and probably still do have) better tech than us right now so they can field both smaller ships and fewer weapons per ship, all of which contribute to lower costs.

Up until the K'tinga which is still in development all their ships have only had a grand total of 3 weapons and the K'tinga only got a single extra weapon for a grand total of 4.

Given the fact that their weapons all hit like trucks (the D7's Heavy Disruptor Beams (2230's design) are supposed to do as much damage as our new prototype phasers) they probably cost more per weapon than ours but as we can see with the new prototype Type-4 Torpedoes compared to the old RFL's that damage scaling is quite a bit more cost effective.

I'm also leaning towards two Type-4 and maximum prototype phasers. I don't want the expense of two RFL.
Thats appears underarmed to me; I dont expect to drop below the Excalibur's torpedo suite on a bigger ship

I could honestly forgo aft torpedoes. The phasers are there to punch down, the torpedoes are at the front to punch up.
And this thing isn't running in warp and trying to shoot backwards. It's defending things.
At most I want standard cheap torpedoes in that position.
Everybody runs. Even the Callies run
And if/when you get in a turning fight with a solo opponent, or a group of hostiles, you will want those aft launchers
Interesting to see the Klingon salvage apparently jumped our next-gen torpedoes and phasers right through the Theoretical and Experimental stages, straight to Prototype. Not bad. Not bad at all.
War is good for one thing, and thats technological espionage
I suspect Klingon Intelligence did much the same thing in Arcadia; they didnt capture any heavy industry, but I wont be surprised if they got some insights there

Whether its stuff they can actually apply to their own society is a different matter
 
Let's all also not forget, the Klingons are not our only enemies. Tholians are ALWAYS up for a skirmish when you get too close (My god the spiders just have ZERO chill). The Romulans are about to start poking the Neutral Zone again. And there is still plenty of random space goobers who think we look like lunch.
 
The amount of internal fighting and general aggression they engage in has probably focused Klingon tech development heavily towards military ends. That means they'll have a lot of experience with getting the best out of their current tech in combat and making incremental advances on it, but any paradigm shifting developments or complete breakthroughs will be likely slower and harder to come by.
 
Looks like the extra thrust from those engines is going to go into covering the mass from the giant frigging torpedo structure we are going to need to add if we go Type 4's :p
 
Thinking about it, I think the dual engines are also sort of future-proof. Seeing as you can refit the Federation so it takes advantage of more and more of its output as time goes forward.

By virtue of their empire collecting client races like Pokemon, they have an equivalent of the multi-species insights that the Federation gets by having so many species collaborating by tapping their work

Its not as good as the Federation gestalt, but I suspect its serviceable enough to copy off other people's homework
And their apparently being the Alpha Quadrant equivalent of a petro-state allows their higher resource availability to cover most of their other deficiencies, such as they are

Depends on how much they draw on the resources of their client races, I guess. If they're pulling on them heavily then that'll weaken their own ability to develop tech-wise, but if they're largely left alone aside from the occasional ship or parts orders they could provide the research edge the Klingons themselves probably lack.

It's a bit ambigious - progressions on the concept? Type-3 could be ditching the andorian supercoolers, Type-4 could be different emission mechanisms, etc. This is about the time, however, that phasers were reclassified into size and/or output brackets. The types 1 through 3 became holdouts, pistols, and rifles respectively.
 
It's interesting that for awhile a 'phaser rifle' was just a regular phaser with a better grip and extra batteries. Then they started upgrading, since they thought wait... if we're having a bigger weapon anyway we can put some extra teeth in this thing you can't do in a handheld...

I think you may have that backwards.

It seems far cheaper to replace a single engine mount with a more powerful model than to completely redo the inertial dampeners and structural integrity fields.
 
Hm. Looking at the updated tech table, I'd be fine with 2-3 Type-IV Torp launchers in front and a RFL facing aft. For ease of logistics I'd prefer two more Type-IVs facing aft instead, but that almost certainly eats too much into space for modules.

Though the Klingons were still losing enough ships that they were sacrificing hull quality by recycling scrapped obsolete vessels into new hulls.
This only happened after the disaster [for them] at Andoria, where they massed 22x D7s, ~36x D6s and >80x Birds of Prey
Then lost, if not all of them, the vast majority of them
If Starfleet had lost that many ships, it would have been over; they still had enough ships to make a fight of it


One other thing that just occurred to me is that phaser power scales off ship mass
I dont think we can assume that Klingon disruptors [and Romulan disruptors. And Breen disruptors] also scale off ship mass
Or do it at the same rate that ours do

Certainly their plasma torpedoes work differently from our photon torpedoes
