Even if we were to assume a perfectly even split in sex, only half of them might become Damsels. And besides, Bretonnia is smaller than the Empire to begin with.

And all of this is without even taking into account that the Damsels have historically been in Bretonnia their entire lives. I can't recall a time when a Damsel ventured outside of Bretonnia at all, let alone go to a place like the Chaos Wastes.
Actually the Empire is mostly dominated by forests where no one dares live. Brettonia is much more 'tamed', and contains far more people.

That doesn't contradict what I said.

Not as such? I just think you're drastically underestimating how many potential wizards the Empire fails to find. The cults of the empire probably account for 50% of magicals outright. That wouldn't be the case in Bretonnia, and they also have better detection mechanism and a religiously mandated order to hand over potentiates. Now it makes sense that some of them wouldn't get picked up particularly the males as they are never heard from again but the same isn't true of other half.

There's also this.

@BoneyM was the name "Runemaster" a deliberate choice?
Because there's a career called that in the very scuffed and ancient tomes of WHFRPG 1stED.

EDIT: names also in AoS, but barring a few choice implications, I doubt it has any lore connection.

Damnsels are supposedly personally trained by the Lady of the Lake, aren't they?

It's not surprising that the average damsel beats the average wizard after thousands of years of tradition and having the equivalent of what it'd be like for the colleges to have Teclis permanently stationed as teacher.

Also worth remembering: their boyfriends are Grail Knights.

Also, he steals Kazador's smile, which is nigh-unforgivable.
What does this refer to? Did he kill one or more of his children in canon?
Oh huh, that was a pleasant surprise. I was seeing the vote to buy the daemon trap spell win and voted no, not noticing later the vote for a dragon's breath item. Would've voted for it If I did notice and I'm glad it won.
You know you can approval vote for multiple things, right?
A bunch of loose Aqshy blowing around the place.
How easily does a quantity of lose Wind in an unfitting environment transform into material effects without any caster casting anything? We already know that Azyr touching wires acts very similar to electricity, but is there anything that one can expect to likely happen if Aqshy gets spilled on, say, a tree, a person or a snow pile?

Because that might very well be useful.
Runelore is a holy relic and a WMD combined. There's no way they let it out of the Karaz Ankor, no matter the wordplay it's draped in.
What types of Oaths bind the Karaz Ankor together? If a Karak wanted to go independent, but would shy away from taking the extra step to start a civil war, how practically independent could they become?

One attended our lecture.
So while it's not quite the chaos wastes, it is outside Bretonnia. :V

Well the lore varies,

They're primarily trained by the Fey Enchantress, who is the head of the order of Damsels. They are also trained explicitly by haidmaidens of the lady of the lake and by the lady herself. There's implications in some editions that Damsels have drunk from the Grail as well.

In fairness, one attended our lecture at the colleges, I don't think they're physically bound to the kingdom.

I really think anybody confidently stating that Bretonnia has more people don't have any sources to back that up.

We don't have any sources for population numbers that aren't ridiculous in all cases. The Empire source books would give you the view that the empire has a million people total which is absolutely impossible I don't believe there's a sourcebook for Bretonnia with actual population numbers.

That said the terrain of Bretonnia is in the most part plains and grass lands as opposed to the Empire nearly total forestation alongside beastman infestation. So I could easily believe Bretonnia has more people.

In canon, Gorfang Rotgut snuck into Karak Azul, captured Kazador's entire family, and shaved Kazrik and nailed him to his fathers throne.

I haven't been consistently following the thread. May I ask when the consensus became that self-improvement in things like our swordplay and magesight outstrip scouting actions in value? I remember that back when we first decided to aid Karak Dum we thought about dedicating a whole turn to literally scout everything.

Most of the route has already been scouted or we have knowledge of, the only place we haven't is the Steepes and Karak dum vacinity, we came to understand that there's no way to actual scout Karak Dum directly we wont even be able to find it if we try iirc?

And we're scouting the steppes this turn.

When we decided to go personally, mostly. If we're along, we can take actions to scout ahead en route, the way we did for the K8P expedition, and it was pointed out that we probably would want to do this even if we had scouted ahead of time, to guarantee the freshness of the intel. As such, scouting AP became more limited in utility compared to expanding our capabilities in general.

So, I think we ought to dig down rather than build a tower, because there are still many cool rooms for us to acquire and it's also cheaper.

So here's an alternative that does it:
[X] PLAN: Chaos makes Taal feel peeved, Dig Down Edition!
-[X] MAX: Allow him to spend all his time on his own preparations.
-[X] JOHANN: Allow him to spend all his time on his own preparations. (NEW)
-[X] DUCK: Attempt to recruit Esbern and Seija and their compatriots of the Knights of Taal's Fury.
-[X][EIC] Integrate the Gong Farmers and the Niter Factory into the EIC, and expand production.
-[X] Attempt to recruit assistance for the Karag Dum Expedition. (Damsels of Bretonnia, Azul Runesmiths)
-[X] With the help of a gyrocarriage, personally scout part of the route specify: Western Great Steppes
-[X] Continue to work on your 'Fog Path' spell.
--[X] The Gambler: specify an action this will apply to: Fog path spell
-[X] Branulhune's ability to disappear and reappear at a thought allows entirely new forms of combat. Try to create them.
-[X] Enchant an item with a Fiendishly Complex or easier spell: Robe with AA and AA mastery (with an aim to have physically indefatigable always on, besides AA). (Overwork)
--[X] Use Ulgu power stones and drake scales to assist with the enchantment if it would help.
-[X] PENTHOUSE: Have additional rooms excavated underneath your Penthouse: -150gc for 6 rooms.
-[X] Write a paper: Warp Lightning observations - shared with Adela (Serenity)

[X] PLAN: Chaos makes Taal feel peeved!

We address the head of the EIC as "Elector Count", just like all the other assholes making a profit off people by use of arms. Where do you think hereditary aristocracy comes from? There's nothing the EIC can do with money that an Elector Count can't also do with money. The worst case for the EIC is that it becomes exactly the same as the aristocrats that currently rule.
I agree with the relevant points of the is of the situation as you describe them. That said:
I'm dropping this line of conversation about the EIC for good.

I agree that the EIC auditors division is a little unnecessary, but eh... the fact is, rarely anything exciting comes from EIC actions. It's not a hill I'm willing to die on over my plan vote.

On another topic, I'm not saying the Damsels aren't powerful, but Mathilde doesn't understand the first thing about them. Think how many misconceptions people in-setting have about the wizards of the colleges. Sure she might have a few stories from Sozoic (who may still have never have met one) but Mathilde knows nothing about how to approach one so as to best appeal or not give offense or what argument could convince them to come along.

This isn't like the Ice Witches where we went through the Colleges to negotiate a very specific service for which they will be compensated. It's a wild moon shot, and I mean Jules Verne style. not Apollo program style. It's not even that it will almost certainly fail... Ah well, a half-action wasted, that happens. It's that I don't like the idea that Mathilde would in-character pull this very Anton-like action of blindly assuming good fortune will save a plan for which she hasn't put in the work.

I disagree, asking for a damsel to accompany us is actually less of an ask than literally getting the Ice witches to control a regional weather system. I consider the arcane risks of using magic at the scale we asked of the Ice witches incredibly significant. That's a minimum of boosted tier battle magic to pull off. They're going to have to be using powerful rituals to achieve this and almost certainly not just the one.

Also in terms of the approach do keep in mind that Bretonnia and Kislev are both diplomacy courses at the colleges. She can probably do enough reading to wing an opening together for the initial approach it's the on the fly thinking which she isn't going to be fully ready for and heaving Bretonnian diplomacy as a skill would help a lot, but I mean even there we're 'partially' trained.

I do think there's a semi decent chance we could fail, I don't think it's at the level you're implying where it's nearly assured and I think it's worth the chance to recruit even one of the best order wizards there are.

Left to it's own devices it'll flow as best it can into a more suitable environment, or gradually soak into soil and plants. Without a will to shape it, it doesn't cause fires, it goes to them.

Individuals to Clans, Clans to Kings, Kings to High Kings, with inbuilt assumptions of divine right. A lot of rulers claim to to rule by the will of God, but the Karaz Ankor has it in writing. Each Karak is effectively independent already and have been since the Underway was destroyed, but trying to make it official would get ugly.

[x] Plan Unconvention

To hell with this Thread Madness obsession with the Damsels; you have my vote.

EDIT: I will vote for any plan that does not attempt to recruit the Damsels. That is my sole priority, to stop that.

[X] PLAN: No Risking Runesmiths
I'm a plan maker with Damsels, and honestly, it feels too late to change (and let people know about) it unless a significant number of people who voted for that plan state their ambivilance or desire to change that option.

That said, I'd be ok with changing it to light wizards.

Reasons I have for Damsels:

-see a quick snapshot of a different culture in the text,
-Mathilde might see interesting magic (I presume that she knows IC that Brettonia has a different tradation)
-Possible plot hooks ftw, unless it's being paid for via daddy's Belegars credit card

Insane streach goal:
-Making connections with other magic users for the foundations of cool collabrations.

----
So, why do you call it a product of thread madness? What's your beef with the idea?[/S]

Esit: ah, just caught up to your posts. A Damsel or two is not the same as changing the weather

Somehow, along the way, dwarf politics became some of my favorite parts of this quest's worldbuilding.

It just adds more depth and layers to a somewhat 2-dimensional canon portrayal of the dawi.

Excellent stuff.

I am all for bringing Thorek if possible, and Karak Azul runesmiths if not, to Karak Dum.

I mean, when you put it like that, we have actually gone out on way thinner limbs for this. Regional Weather Control is crazy, when you have to look at it from the perspective of an actual caster on the ground rather than just going 'eh, they're weather witches, they can handle it'.

Damsels, from a culture of people already heavily predisposed towards going on adventures, are a much easier sell in comparison. 'Hey, we're going on an adventure to do good things'. 'Neat'. Plus whatever their bills would be.

[X] PLAN: Chaos makes Taal feel peeved!
[X] Plan: Fog Path to Success (Damsels and Rune smiths)

I'm leery of bringing Thorek in particular because making him mobile is really hard, and he's actually a better Battle-Smith than Kragg is so losing him would be bad even before we get into the political implications.

I believe, and I mean this, that we would only succeed on a Crit, a roll of 100 or over. 86 or higher on the dice roll, given Mathilde's 14 diplomacy.
