There's a part of me that's wondering if the bodies rot after its soul is stolen.
Almost certainly - it's canon that they rot after the "usual" soul gem removal.

(That at least some of the shades won't have bodies to go back to means we have another reason to research creation of artificial bodies, independent of dewitching)

I think

"What's done is done is done. I can take Souls. Magical girl, normal people. Leaves 'em brain-dead, and..."

Yeah, found it.

Edit: huh. Now I have a question. What, does she differentiate between brain and brainstem or something? I mean, yeah, you can do that, I guess. Otherwise, why the distinction?

Maybe it's the other way around and ( for once ) she knows about medicine only as much as a normal teenager/adult who cut her education short would and what she actually means is a persistent vegetative state.

Edit 2: inb4 Riona is one of the world's youngest MDs and knows exactly what she's talking about. :V

P.s. for a bit more random musing, maybe Riona couldn't control our soul because we are a collective and she didn't have enough power to control us? I think that there are stolen souls that have not turned into witches is a point in favor to the idea that the stolen souls are not conscious. That, or the incubators built the soul gems so that it's easier for gucas to turn into witches. I wouldn't put it past them.
We don't know for sure that she can't, but if she can't I expect it's for the same reason Sayaka can't copy our power, whatever that is.

Nooot exactly. Kyubey's extraction actually kills the Magical Girl so that their body can be a perfectly micromanaged magically animated puppet. As far as what we've heard, Riona just turns people into vegetables.

Not the same thing.

So... How likely is it, at this point, that Riona is Feathers?

Pro: Riona has tons of powers, wouldn't be too surprising if she had a Feathers power available
Pro: Riona's powerset "kills" people in the same way that Feathers does

Con: this does not explain how a Feather spawned on us, back when we were experimenting with Barrier magic
Con: this does not explain other creepy stuff, like Feathers sending us hidden-text messages in timestop

???: Riona would gain tremendous benefit from flat-out stealing our soul and taking our power for herself
???: but she hasn't tried to do so yet, which speaks well for her morals, possibly
???: maybe she can't (much like Sayaka couldn't copy our power)
The biggest problem with this theory was the Oriko was able to see herself getting killed by (presumably) Rionna, but she can't see where Feathers is acting. It's possible that Feathers sometimes uses Rionna as a weapon, the same way it used a witch to try and kill Sayaka, but I don't think Rionna has any direct connection.

I don't really see the difference. A brain-dead body becomes a rotting corpse pretty quickly without elaborate medical intervention, and magical girls show all the signs of life while their souls are still attached. Maybe one has an autonomic breathing reflex and the other doesn't, but it seems like a thin distinction to make.

I've been trying to articulate my thoughts on this and I'm having trouble writing it out - so I'm just going to give you the disjointed mess I do have - sorry.

But I'm thinking our best case scenario is that Riona has been heavily affected by the actions she believe she needed to do. She had to rip peoples souls out just to survive against hostile magical girls. She also likely knew about the witch bomb from the moment she saw her own soul. So for her more then most girls the fights were very much about her own survival rather then keeping her powers for the sake of having her powers.

The actions she did for survival, along with taking care of fake grief cleansers as she implemented her own from of justice have likely affected her in that she she has had to come up with justifications and has likely ingrained some behaviors into her. The entire anti-social routine might of started as something on purpose to keep people away given what she can do

Her actions have to be viewed through the lens of actions done for survival in a world where she had no law, no government. Under normal circumstances her actions without condition would be evil. But magical girls do not normally operate under normal circumstances. Her non-nonchalance may be a form of denial plus the fact that the Cider she drinks is alcoholic, and magically enhanced to boot, my be a further sign of having deep seated issues.

What could make a girl come all the way from ireland on the basis of hersay and rumor? I say desperation, and maybe a thin strand of hope.

Thats the best case.

Worst case is she actually does it all for powers, has no qualms about what she does. Then we need to deal with her and quickly.

But first we must give her a chance.

Potentially what we're seeing is that Kuubey creates a physical container for the soul, something that exists as an object, while Riona can harness and maintain the soul independent of a container. It's a question worth asking, because it plays into our understanding of what de-wichification may actually entail.

I'll just note that any magical girl that considers her powers horrible and immoral will stop being a magical girl very very soon. Degrees of rationalizing are a simple self-preservation, in that case.

Also, do we know that she has taken the souls of normal people? She says that she's able too, but that might be just a logical conclusion from being able to feel them or whatever. If she did and can release souls, would she leave normals afterwards? They are not exactly useful, after all.

I just seen that fact unilaterally assumed, and I don't think it quite should be, even if it's certainly very possible.

Given what Naida said about not mentioning her sister it might very well be she 'accidently' used her powers on her sister.

Honestly, offensive action here seems like it would be counterproductive, and sets a very bad precedent. We are better than this. Everyone should get a chance to explain themselves, (barring circumstances that prohibit that). Rionna is cooperating with us, and is here as a guest. She is engaging in an open dialog with us, and is discussing her powers. We have the chance to talk with her about this, and it would be both negligent and hypocritical to deny that opportunity.

EDIT: In general, I am somewhat inclined to believe the idea that death is a worse fate than soul slavery, though that is neither here nor there.

I'll make another vote to better set the IC conversation, rather than derail it. What do we need to know??? Let us not talk about unnecessary things yet. Our primary concern, before we get into any rational display of morality, is to

#####

gain the information we need without complications.

#####

Failing to try that leaves us with irrational choices. We have a small amount of time to use for this, seemingly without penalty.

I want to argue for the condition that Rionna is typical, not monstrous. _yes._ Being a Magical Girl is this bad, if you live long enough. We spoke to Niko lately - good example? The difference between Niko and Rionna is ... ???

Punishment should be based on evidence, and that is a fortunate attitude. Rionna would have been a maximized survivor if she approached every grief manipulator as an assassination target. We would be much less risk to her after a few scratches and dents. All the area-of-effect magics are hazardous, and ours is better dealt with using deadfalls. Heck, even Oriko could do it. But Rionna wanted the evidence first.
Clever Girl.
Are we going to remember to get the facts WE want?

If she is a typical Magical Girl, we can understand some things about her already? One, her emotions are not healthy.
the fact that the Cider she drinks is alcoholic, and magically enhanced to boot, my be a further sign of having deep seated issues.
Drinking to enable psychological comfort is probably already alcoholism. We don't know how advanced it might be, but for anyone up to ten years beyond her visual age, she has a radically pro-alcohol persona. As we know about her witchbomb status, and how she immediately references seeing what happens to her own soul, she is also likely a person who puts her fear first. It may also figure into her reputation, I'll bet she gladly exaggerates because bad rep leads her into fewer fights.

Rare indeed is the human (or post human) who can isolate themselves to a marked extent and not be damaged by it. Her callous attitudes are possibly explained by these two facts as well. If so, these reasons may not be deeply ingrained, or she may have a worldview that is adaptive and pragmatic. These things can be educated for remediation.

What do we need to know, for our Justice? Under what conditions would she keep Stealing Souls.

Rionna is also a teenage girl whose morals are "these people have hurt others so I should take them out before they hurt more" and hasn't introspected on why that's wrong.
These would be very basic thoughts. If we also notice the way her dialogue expects the compliance of the other party, and skips establishing moral frameworks between us, she is operating significantly below her age group not only in Social, but Wisdom as well. Would she make errors because of that, in many ways, if true? Of course, not having life skills means one has to use more of the skills they do have, when they are challenged. The challenges of Magical Girl existence are degenerate and overpowering. Sticking with the simple solution is a running fix.

Her world is due for a bit of change, and we can do that.

[] Rionna is speaking like she hasn't trusted anyone in a long time.
-[] Explain our real magic is about working together. We will show her.

I'm glad Onmur can think about it in a similar way, see:
On Riona's honesty: Slight rambling:

I think the fact she's telling us all these things, upfront, without trying to bother sugarcoating any of it, has to do with trust.

Wanting to trust.

This is obviously just a reading, and I might be wrong, or there just might be many other ways to explain Riona's actions, but I see her as someone who wants to be understood, who wants to have the support that's been denied to her.

She wants someone who can understand her, who can help her.

If she makes herself to stand in the worst light possible (within reason)? It's basically bait. Will we take it, and decry her? Like everyone else? Riona does hold a city by herself, and I do not believe anyone would particularly want that. Compare: Mami.

I would say Riona holds out hope that the world can be fair and just. By being blunt like this, she's...

...

..............

Oh my god, is Riona tsundere?

What I meant to say, Riona's not a social girl. Being upfront and throwing all the information at someone is a way to deal with social stress. She just want to get rid of it. If that helps sort out the people who give a shit from those that don't, bonus.

Do we give a shit? :V (Do we want to understand her?)
I'm not seeing a Tsundere, but the perception is otherwise top-grade. Find a way not to distract yourself from voting the important part of your deduction? Her exact usage of her power is not the focus. Her intent is. The complication is that she has been burning out. Without an idealist community to sustain her, pain led to shortcuts? Anger led to indifference?

Maybe Rionna is what would happen to Sayaka if Sabrina died tomorrow?

We can go for a big breakthrough approach, or a long and gradual approach. Maybe the best plan to get her into our morality is to place ourselves where she (ideally) wants us? Such as just saying, "what she wishes for the world is possible, but it doesn't look like her past - it looks a lot like Sabrina. Try it our way, see how far see gets."

Thus, if we want to determine what Rionna means to our future, we really need to do one thing. It can't be instant, but in the next five minutes, we should try.
#####

Learn her actual wish.

#####
Once we have heard and placed it in context, we can answer "will her life change?" Set her feet on the road to granting her wish. That should be mostly the things she has been lacking for herself, a way to both see that her wish makes her future, and the different attitude that lets her move in the direction she wants. This girl should have been on a treadmill for a few years, like Homura. In exchange for 'granting' her wish, we may find a much better person.

Saving girls is why we came. Optimize for it, OK?

This is why artificial Grief Seeds are the best project to talk with her about.

Rionna might want to be mundane-moral, but since Meat is Grief Seeds are murder, that is a pragmatic impossibility.
Clear Seeds do not break that link, only a quantitative difference is available. She would definitely take one. But it will not convert her behavior totally.

She might also want to be the one in control of her new power source. It just so happens we would dearly love to find more girls capable of cleansing. This is the enchanting path to that goal.

If I have understood her correctly, she will stay as long as she needs to in order to practice and learn our control enchantment. And since she is a power stealer, she may have insights that let her find a way to copy magic using effort and insight, not only wish abilities. Mastering the economic enchantment of a cleaning container will gain her loyalty. I'm not joking, we can be Sensei here. And if done right, I mean exactly that. Not just train her, but teach her a whole new life if we pay attention.

Also probably worth mentioning that she's probably drunk right now, based on the fact she's drinking Enchanted Booze. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if she's using that to numb her emotions, which would explain...well, it would explain a lot, actually.

Heck, maybe she used it on her sister in a misguided attempt to give her sister immortality.

Taking a step back from the actual discussion for a second, this thread continues to be a fascinating study in human psychology. We have *again* simulated what I would expect a girl with Sabrina's general mentality to feel and think in this situation:
  1. Immediate disgust and righteous anger.
  2. An undercurrent of uncomfortable pragmatism shows up while the response is considered, as idealism wars with practicality.
  3. There is an immediate pushback against those thoughts.
  4. Conflicted feelings lead to contemplation, which leads to realizations and understandings that were previously buried beneath the emotional reaction, and proper responses and solutions begin appearing as her head cools.

Taking a step back from the actual discussion for a second, this thread continues to be a fascinating study in human psychology. We have *again* simulated what I would expect a girl with Sabrina's general mentality to feel and think in this situation:
Does this count as evidence for the model of consciousness as as a discussion forum for different parts of your brain?

While these are human souls, ever read Blindsight? Scramblers can think and problemsolve but aren't conscious.
The problem is that you're dealing with magic. Not even Rionna understands the mechanics of how her power works. And we've seen magic do some pretty bizarre and nonsensical shit already.

Like, how does Sayaka's (or its original MG's) bird power work? Does it literally grant birds within a certain radius more intelligence and loyalty to her? Does it alter their thoughts, or instincts, on a temporary or permanent basis? Does Sayaka speak bird? Do the birds speak Sayaka?

Homura's power stops time. Let me repeat that: Homura's power lets her STOP TIME. ALL OF IT. EVERYWHERE. That's pretty goddamn insane in its own right, but...it also allows for things like TVs to still work, and for air to still flow. Oh yeah, and she can go back in time.

Akemi has literal luck powers. How the fuck you can make "luck" a power is beyond my imagination (since, once you get beyond a quantum-mechanics level, all luck is merely coincidence--in other words, you can't manipulate luck without telekinetically altering things [including the minds of people] very specifically and with truly enormous foresight...or by changing the past retroactively).

I think it would be valuable for people to take a moment and think about how Sabrina's actions might seem if described to someone who didn't know her. We've stolen people's souls before. Sure, we gave them back relatively soon, but we've also contemplated keeping them indefinitely on future occasions to people that we consider a threat. We also hand out little girls' souls like party favors for other girls to dump their grief into, and we've repeatedly put off developing more ethical alternatives because we were busy. We also display a pretty cavalier attitude towards the subject at times, referring to some of the greatest horrors of our existence by cutesy nicknames like "lichbomb" and "witchbomb" and the monster behind it all as "the bunny-cat" and referring to girls whose souls we're about to steal (which we describe with the not-at-all-irreverent slang term "degemming") with pop-culture references like "Ramiel" and "Kuvira." Almost as if this were some sort of game?

We could very easily come off looking as bad as Riona looks.

As always: no, it was not, and it did not become that in PMKM until after she witnessed the Freezer.
You're misremembering. Her wish was, "I want to burn their deaths into my eyes." Before the Freezer or any of that other shit even happened. And the first thing she did when she became a meguca was to start turning innocent people with nothing to do with the Pleiades into witch-like monsters. So saying that she did those things because she considered the Pleiades "bad" doesn't really explain it.

Hm.

Now is not the time to be making the Idealistic social attack. Since she is probably pissed enough to take that as a challenge and attempt to disabuse us of some notions.

Which could easily escalate into a fight... which is not something we want or need here.

Edit:that being said, I dont have a better plan. Or even a suggested course of action.

So.
