So I remembered Firn pointing out once how, when Oriko makes her Wish, she gets a vision and precog, different things.

In canon, Oriko gets a vision of UKG wrecking shit up, becomes horrified, and dedicates herself to end the threat however she can.

In PMAS, Oriko obviously doesn't seem to have got the same deal, not exactly... I don't think we've asked her about what her First Vision was? Huh.

Anyway, my thought was that maybe Madoka's first chapter precog dream also changed, and we could ask her about it at some point. In case she remembers. A dream. From weeks ago.

You never know!

No commentary on the changes I've made or reasoning?

We never did ask Sayaka about her doorway.

I seem to recall us asking her what her first visions were when we were trying to talk her out of self-destructing, and she was kinda nonspecific but it was a variety of things, including Kirika and us.

Well, in normal canon, she winds up talking about the dream with Sayaka and Hitomi after she saw the girl from her dream in real life, so it might have stuck.

I was gonna but I got distracted by the tally system not working right.

*Can't tell if serious*

[X] The Phoenixian
Quite serious:
"So tell me, Oriko, what about all of this was so necessary? You know, you nearly killed Sayaka, her family, and the entire building. Those aren't the actions of a sane person. Tell me, what justifies it?" you spit at her.

"You should ask her whether her door was open or shut before she went to sleep," the seer says. "This is necessary for what is to come."

That's not an answer. You know it, she knows it, and she knows that you know it.

The only thing I can think to add is that we might bargain by getting a discount rate an any additional prisoners down the line. Because you know this won't be the last psycho meguca we ever encounter.

I remember that, it's just that it's a, well, the quote says it, not an answer.

My guess always was that Sayaka might have left her door open, but Oriko closed it to prevent the fire and smoke from spreading into her room as quickly, which gave Sayaka more time before asphyxiating and being burned alive.

So it's just Oriko pointing out she was doing what she did Because GOOD! Reasons™.

"Got it," she snaps, ribbons lashing out and sliding between the door and the wall. The blonde braces herself, and then hauls on the ribbons, tearing the door off its hinges while you focus on keeping the flames back.

The room beyond is untouched by the fire, but smoke pools against the ceiling, and you can see Sayaka huddled on the floor beside her bed, blanket dragged around her face. She lifts her face to look at the two of you through reddened and tear-laden eyes.
EDIT: moar quote
The wall explodes outwards in a spray of crumbling mortar and cheap brick. On the other side of the newly formed hole, you can see another bedroom, this one with a larger bed, and an older couple huddled together in the corner furthest from the door. Like Sayaka's room up until a moment ago, the door is firmly shut, and not yet burned through.

...welp.

Fuck. Good job, us.

Okay, I guess we need to point that out to Sayaka. And make sure that Homura is in earshot when we do it.

Oriko already mentioned that I think.
I know, I've just never seen anyone connect the dots.

Why haven't we told Sayaka and Homura? This won't instantly solve the whole "They don't trust her" problem, but it'll go a long way toward improving the situation!

I'm having another one of those "we have no chance of winning because we're fucking morons" moments.

edit: No, it's been too long, Sayaka will have forgotten. We missed our chance. Great.

I'm fairly certain Homura was present when Oriko mentioned that. She just doesn't care. I also believe Oriko mentioned that detail to Sayaka but I can't say that for certain.

@Vebyast I believe the apt metaphor would compare us to a 'squirrel king?'

The fine-tuning continues.

You know, it's funny, but when we keep cutting down votes to keep wordcount low, we end up with a very specialized Sabrina-PMAS-jargon that Firn is gracious enough to interpret as intended. About a third of it is complete sentences that clearly feed pretty closely into intended Sabrina-dialogue, a third of it is vaguely memetic terminology and in-jokes that arose during thread discussion and became The Accepted Way To Refer To The Thing, and a third of it is short choppy verb-object directives missing most articles and determiners in order to save wordcount.

I don't know, I just find it kind of wonderful, and, if I remember correctly when I first read through this, pretty hilariously opaque sometimes when you haven't read the discussion that precedes some of these votes.

Is this not a major intent of the format? Obviously, the whole quest is a study of new language development, derived from stimulus-response polling over the Internet. That's why we live with word counts, right? We think we are playing Sabrina, when in fact we are slowly pruning a stunning neural net somewhere. They will have a groundbreaking AI if they are lucky. And it will experience the qualia of 'hug.'

We could advance our works agenda when we call KB, right now.

Get our feet over to the other Fukushima groups now? Not important? Why?

Get details set for Anri confinement? She does have future value, or... do we have a plan to replace her utility?

I think this might be the single longest update I've written for PMAS. Hope it was worth the wait, and I'll happily take criticism on the fight scene in particular - I personally feel it could have been improved, but I wanted to get it out. So I'd love everyones' thoughts on it, if you have any!
Well, not criticism per se... But was I the only one to actually check if this was indeed the single longest update for PMAS? (It was.) Also, 613 threadmarks? Impressive.

If Sayaka left the door to her room open that night, it's likely something she does habitually. She'll remember whether or not she usual does so.

Speaking of time-limited. Oriko's memories of her visions are fading, and there's still that thing I want to ask her: Reading through things a lot of her despair comes from her absolute certainty in the accuracy of her visions, save for only us and Feathers... but if her certainty is broken, especially by an action she can take, it should give her a spot of hope.

As it so happens, I think that possibility exists in the idea that she cannot see the results of herself changing. She's historically been unable to make any progress learning enchanting via her visions, and IIRC she likewise needed to be told how healing worked by us. The biggest flaw in the idea is her making a bomb, but if that came of Kirika's help or without her peering into the future first, it could have happened.

This can also be tied into how the Oriko of Symmetry Diamond got control of her visions: When she talks with Yuma she talks about "being the person you want to be", which could well have come from or sparked an epiphany.

(It even makes a sort of sense for her wish: She wished to know her life's meaning. So her power shows her that meaning, via the viewing the results of being who she is as she is now.)

Some of this is new, much is not, and I've spoken of this elsewhere, but I felt it should be reiterated and put in the thread proper.

It's arguable whether or not Homura got the implications of what Oriko said but, yeah, she was there. I can't find Oriko and Sayaka talking about it though. Closest they come in the update where they confront each other is going from "you tried to kill me" to "Feathers."

The only thing I can think to add is that we might bargain by getting a discount rate an any additional prisoners down the line. Because you know this won't be the last psycho meguca we ever encounter.
I'm not sure how to fit this in in the space allotted.

We could advance our works agenda when we call KB, right now.
I do not understand what you mean by "our works agenda." Elucidate.

Get our feet over to the other Fukushima groups now? Not important? Why?
Doesn't strike me as super-important. As long as the offer is on the table, we can do it whenever we're back.

Get details set for Anri confinement? She does have future value, or... do we have a plan to replace her utility?
Honestly, the biggest future use for Anri would likely be near the end stages of dewitching ...at which point she's either defused or we can just get Asuka Yuuri to watch and chaperone her.

Fair enough I guess. I just don't think Sayaka would care for that detail over the whole 'I burnt down your apartment with you and your family still in it'.

I'm with Mura on this. We already emphasized to Sayaka that Oriko did what she did in service of making a better world through her visions - confirmation that Oriko set up events such that Sayaka wouldn't die doesn't really add anything to that.

Furthermore, Oriko had a fairly long private chat with Sayaka that we weren't privy to - it's entirely possible this topic was already raised.

For me, it's the battleship that comes to mind first, before the state. :V

Sabrina: *meets Iowa group* do any of you pack battleship weaponry?
Iowa group: ...... no?
Sabrina: *gets indignant* This is false advertising! How can you call yourself the Iowa group without any connection to an Iowa class battleship!
Iowa group: we're named after the state!
Sabrina: ..... ooooooh OK!

There's reasons why I've never brought up the door thing until now. :/

And really, I very much doubt I'm the only one who got what Oriko said, and I don't remember it ever being brought up. Though it might've had, it's been a long time.

"You see, I totally did stab this person but I did so in a way they'd bleed to death in hours rather than minutes and then I called the ambulance. That means it's totally OK."

I'm sure that'll hold up in court.

The point is, first, this is bullshit. Second, we've already called Oriko on her bullshit, even if we didn't cite the door specifically, her door excuse was just SUBTLY pointing out her reasons being at odds with her perceived actions, that's all.

We've already called Oriko on how THE WHOLE THING was bullshit, how it was unacceptable and how we're gonna find better ways to do things.

And we know Oriko's 'I did what I had to do' thing is bullshit anyway, she's both suicidal and depressed and somewhat megalomaniac. Her plan was to piss people off, have fun plotting things, and die. With Kirika.

Imagine convincing Homura to spare Oriko if we hadn't caught her then and there? Maybe Firn's been playing us so hard we didn't notice he actually wanted us to catch Oriko before she did so much wrong Homura wouldn't allow us to give her a chance.

Derail aside, we've already convinced Sayaka and Homura that Oriko didn't actually want to murder Sayaka, so... maybe pointing out the door thing would have helped convince Sayaka faster (not Homura, she was there), but we did the convincing anyway, so... good?

"Oh by the way..."

"You're all under arrest."

IOWA: "You think you can just-?"

"Mami's just tied you all up while we were talking."

IOWA: *Struggles but can't move*

"Thanks for buying me time, Sabrina, Sayaka."

IOWA: "Damn it, we commited the number one cardinal sin of the meguca world."

"Oh?"

*Blushes*

IOWA: "We underestimated Tomoe Mami."

"... Oh! Makes sense!"

*Hugs Mami*

IOWA: "Take us away."

*Shrugs, slaps Anti Magic manacles on IOWA group and takes them away*

Being the meguca police is really easy when you got Tomoe Mami on your team.
