There's always an upper limit. How many will they need, for whatever they're planning? Multiple thicknesses or shapes? They'll wear or be damaged eventually, too, and need replacing, and so even if they can afford a price for this time they also need to be able to afford having established a going rate that they won't be able to pay next time. NASA doesn't have an unlimited budget, far from it.

If they realize the prices you offer are completely dissociated from the manufacturing costs, that'll cause problems (see "overcharging"). If they don't realize it, that might cause different problems (they won't negotiate as well as they could – if we actually care about NASA's results, we don't want to prevent them from buying because our quoted price is too unaffordable).

Hmm....

Fact: Enchantment is very artisanal, rather than industrial. Fact: Scientists want a lot of one-offs that range from difficult-to-manufacture to outright impossible.

We can ship these problems: In addition to grief manufacture, enchantment could also prove useful as well. And we're not the only ones who can do the latter.

Honestly, if we're not the first girl to have the idea then that might explain why PMMM is so advanced in certain ways. Doesn't matter if a girl only makes one enchantment, ever. If that one enchantment is a useful research subject or tool that gets into the hand of a scientist, it could advance all of science, just by that little bit.

*Pictures Hideyoshi Nao making a living selling invisible ceramics to researchers so they can use them as windows to get a clear view of the dynamics of high-temperature fluids and gasses without worrying about black-body radiation from the window.*

For cashy money, I'd prefer to stick to custom fabrication of exotic devices, with Hitomi's Mom handling the business end of things. Every research lab under the sun has some wacky apparatus that they've always wanted to make but that's somewhere between "can't get funding for it" and "actually impossible to machine", and the grad students would be absolutely thrilled to talk your ear off about it and probably even share the models with you. Hitomi's Mom can get us as many introductions as we want in those circles with zero suspicion or doubt; no bureaucratic hoops to jump through, no huge contracts, no businessmen to call us little girls. You hand a professor the apparatus that'll put his name in Nature and he wouldn't even question the part where you're a two-headed lizard wearing a tie-dye wig. Start with tabletop equipment worth $10k, contract at cost of raw materials or less, and snowball on reputation and word of mouth until we're fabbing mirrors for satellite observatories and superconducting rings for particle accelerators at a billion bucks a pop.

Ooohhh, I like this idea even more than silicon fabbing. Yes, let's help science. Let's become known as that girl who can fabricate absolutely anything.

I wonder if we could get away with claiming we used 'magic' for fabrication whenever asked. :V

My reading:

Either Yuki does this 'show I could fool you by putting up the cute moe little girl act but then I act professional' thing usually... or she's tailoring her approach to us based on what she knows.

See this?

"After you handed three of my girls their asses?" Yuki drawls. "Yes. I made a point of finding out."

"Sure, from whom?" you ask. "I haven't made that much of a splash... Actually, more important question: what have you heard?"

Yuki gives you a considering look, and starts ticking off points on her fingers. "One, you are powerful. Two, it appears you can truly cleanse Soul Gems and Grief Seeds. Three, you are not shy about exercising your power. Four, you're apparently with Tomoe Mami? I'm not sure whether I give that any credibility."

"Nothing about my intentions or what I want?" you say, making a face.

"Granted, you only seem to have appeared on the scene a few days ago," Yuki says, taking a step back and propping her fists on her hips. "Perhaps a few weeks. It's unsurprising that your most distinctive traits have made their rounds first. How much of it is true?"

Hopefully Nadia will be able to make a difference.

"All of it," you admit with a sigh. "I'm kind of annoyed that what I'd consider my most distinctive trait hasn't made an impression, though. I want to help."
I have an inkling it's buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuullshiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Did she really have no clue what we are about? Really? After we verbally assaulted her teammates for their reckless behavior in fighting during rush hour, after spending an hour doing rescue work, after we let them go rather than even try to punish them for their actions, even after offering them help after the shit they helped cause?

Right. Yuki knows what we're about. She probably figured showing honesty and being straightforward would help her deal with us in particular.

Though it can also help with a number of people.

You woner if it'll teleport with you?
Typo found!

Sakura gasps, hand tightening instinctively on your wrist as she staggers into Rin's side. The black-haired girl instantly loops her arm around Sakura, supporting her weight.
I'm pretty sure Rin is blonde?

I like most of how the voting's been going.

[x] Payment:

--[x] Mind Homura's advice. Haggle, erring on the side of generosity.
-[x] Discuss hiring them again in the future.
--[x] Ask about payments/services they're interested in. You're assembling a team to tackle Walpurgisnacht.

[x] Chat topics (intersperse as appropriate):
-[x] Ask if Nishimura, Koizumi, and Akiyama are alright.
-[x] "Supervillains"... just volcano base aesthetic, or something more? What other groups are in town?
-[x] The active soul in Grief Seeds "hibernates" when you Clear them. Whenever you visit, you'd like to check if that's changed.

[x] Telepathy Rin.
-[x] You've got the impression something's wrong. Anything you can help, or...?

[x] Kyuubey.
-[x] Dump Grief. Keep two seeds' worth.
I'm torn. On one hand, I want to telepathy Homura and O&K together, so Homura can see we're keeping her in the loop when dealing with Oriko and also that O&K are providing to our cause... on the other hand, she'll probably be even less talkative than usual if we do that.

For dumping Grief, considering one Seed's worth is enough to make a full Barrier... we probably should keep less. One Seed's worth shuld be way more than we need, and better to not need to call KB more often.

Finally... Rin. I think we need to offer a reason for her to open up a bit. Perhaps we should acknowledge we were a big part of what's causing her all this stress. Not only did we do an imperfect good, we were the one talking sense into Rin until she started pushing her friends around.

So perhaps we should acknowledge our responsibility there, and that might be cause for Rin to share something when we ask what's wrong, and whether we could help.

Bring O&K, make an excuse to take some time to discuss stuff in private with Anri+Yuki, let them commiserate with Sakura about our persistent interference.

Could help if Oriko is up to it.

Not an easy job for our new Socialguca, though.

...

Ah, I really want to do something nice for Oriko after today. Specially if end up pulling her into this again right now.

I won't say I'm willing to beg to Homu and Sayaka, but I'll feel very disappointed with our collective self if we can't get Oriko some concessions about her freedom.

Also, we should have a chat with Kirika and compare dates! Her date with Oriko and ours with Mami!

Re: Moneymaking ventures.

Aside from fabricating exotic components and research equipment, there's probably a market for near-perfect marble sculptures/busts for rich clients, and other intricately carved art pieces. Microscale etchings anyone? And I'm thinking we could do something about restoring and preserving museum paintings, murals, and ancient scrolls too.

In another topic... Rin's stressed out look is making mildly paranoid that there's a no-zero chance of this meeting being a set-up. Would it be too much to ask if we can partially cover the surroundings with our utility fog as precaution?

Gotta say, I enjoy writing Yuki.

I feel like I should note that she let you see that act of hers. Make of it what you will.

Also, the funniest thing is that if you tried to hug her without her consent, you'd probably get a dagger in your stomach, and her meguca weapon isn't even a dagger. :V

[] Compliment her on her huggability.
-[] Despite possibly getting knifed for the trouble, you still wanna hug her.

If everything else fails, organizing double dates is an option, I guess?

We set this meeting up out of the blue. Fukushima has more to gain with us as an ally or at least a client rather then someone to attack on sight.

If we asked for permission to hug her because she's so fucking cute, would she say yes?

What happened to "negotiation???"

We are getting out of line in proffering anti-magic to Tsuruya. This is, just by the way she asked, a premium item. We didn't even ask what her proposed labor allotment for the contract is. And current time is well before we have any idea if further arming them is wise. Way too much trust!

This should be a winnable circumstance, because so far our signals are coming in that she is very interested in associating with us. And she should be, but teasing, attempting to overcharge and playing a long game make sense from her selfish position. Basically, we are unlikely to be dangerous to Fukushima given our demonstrated personality, unlikely to wreck immediately given our allies in Mitakihara, and (DING DING DING!) able to pay. Right now we are in the middle of the intelligence test. We are expected to do normal 'adult' things. She does sell to children all the time. She will be trying to tell the difference using this conversation.

Part of the value proposition to her is actually... Sabrina. Tsuruya has military power, but the best way to spend that is not to fight. She can't hire us, because we are not economically disabled. The other bond she can form is the happy occasion where we pay her. Either way, in the future she has some chance of using our power to aide her survival, and reduces the chance we might destroy her other assets. Like we already did. As long as we figure out her angle, we can get what we want too.

We should normally want five of her girls in Mitakihara, because stuff jeeps happening. And a contractual obligation for Walpurgisnacht. Since mercs do NOT die for the cause, and Clear Seeds still have value ATM, she would likely help us hire a much larger crew for that week, drawn from people she knows. Everybody loves a curb stomp, and while it isn't hard on every group's neck, ending Walpurgisnacht is truly a public good. As long as we pay = )

Anti-magic is a trade we can explore in the future. My vote cannot support giving her that promise today.

We now know money is not an issue for Sabrina. Cash is the normal sweet deal from here, as the Clear Seed should be more than enough payment entirely.

The job we need to do now should be fishing for information. She expects some action like that, and it is part of the deal. She should have insight into Akiko. And we need the intro speech from her about "why groups hire her." Do we even know what their normal work is? Is it usually Bullying? Legbreaking? Killing? Self-interest and sadistic tendencies in mercenaries would be a given. She is a good shopkeeper. That still allows a wide range of morality we haven't defined. Where is our limit, and who is she? Just saying... we don't know. Therefore, we decide in ignorance ATM. Fix that.

Also, conversation ends with hug offer, because Sabrina in-character is just bold like that.

And she should be, but teasing, attempting to overcharge and playing a long game make sense from her selfish position.
And? It's not like she's asking for anything we have a limited supply of.

A child would've tried using the Clear Seeds as a infinity dollar bill. We told her our future plans and their likely economic effects, and offered on our own to pay in stuff she would still consider valuable in the end. We've already shown that we're not stupid, we just don't care.

And? It's not like she's asking for anything we have a limited supply of.
Firstly, because it's something we have to bargain with, since the Clear Seed is useless as currency when we're giving them away. This is a business transaction, these are mercenaries, and we have more things we'd like to pay them to do than just this. Let's try to negotiate a decent amount of bang for our buck.

Secondly, because those antimagic enchantments aren't ours to give. They're Kirika's and we haven't consulted her about us bartering with them. That's just rude and presumptuous.

This is my take on what to do with Rin... which probably could wait until we can give her more of our attention, but throwing it out there: Did we ever thank her for doing the right thing, for helping us and everybody else?
